Al & Val's Modern Homesteading Life
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ก.พ. 2022
We're Alan and Valantine, an older couple exploring modern homesteading and self-sufficiency. We began our journey with a move to upstate New York back in June of 2022 with the purchase of 30 acres of beautiful hardwood forest and have been going HARD at it since then! We've spent two years building our beautiful home and learning how to build furniture, cabinetry, and everything else we'll need to live comfortably. We try to do as much as possible for ourselves and find TH-cam to be a GREAT place to learn! From our off-grid solar system, to all of our super-efficient building choices, we've done what we can to need as little as possible. Join us on our journey, and SUBSCRIBE to our channel to keep up with all we'll be doing!
So You Wanted A WHITE CHRISTMAS?
We're having a WHITE CHRISTMAS, but it ain't always FUN... When the weather calls for 6 inches plus on top of the 3 or 4 you've already got on the ground, it can make it tough sometimes. The older snow is packed and icy, and the stuff on top just packs down into a slick mess. Once the temps drop back to the single digits and teens, it will harden up enough to get around okay. We're all set for Christmas 2024, so we'll just take it easy and stay indoors for the next few days. And HAVE YOURSELF A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Clearing SNOW from our SOLAR PANELS with our Never-Scratch SnowBuster Snow Broom.
มุมมอง 779 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
It's that time of year again, and the SNOW has arrived! The one job we HAVE to do if we want POWER, is to clean the snow off of our solar panels. No matter how cold, like the 14 degrees F during this video, it's GOT to be done! You should do it SAFELY, however, and we use a SnowBuster foam SNOW BROOM on a 26' aluminum extension pole to reach all the way to the top of our panels. You DEFINITELY ...

มุมมอง 780หลายเดือนก่อน
This video addresses a common problem with the F150 Crew Cab models from 2011 through 2014, the "Rear Door Ajar" error message. It''s a rather simple (3 Beer) fix and doesn't cost very much to DIY. We purchased the exact replacement WIRING HARNESS for under $50. When completed, it resolves the issues with the error message, courtesy and accessory lights remaining on, and battery drain because o...

We finally got the driveway repaired where our creek flooded and washed out around our dual culverts. Valantine has wanted to try and build her own INEXPENSIVE but BEAUTIFUL BUTCHER BLOCK COUNTER TOPS since we first decided to build this house. We're FINALLY doing it! We cut and planed those down to the sizes we needed, glued them up and planed, then sanded them several more times until...

Looks like he was pushing the snow up against the house ?
It's just the way the camera was angled. The snow was actually about 3 to 4 feet away from the house (we have some large rocks out there to prevent anything from running up against it.) Hope you have a Merry Christmas!
Great video
Great video again Al and Val. I was going to ask about your tool but I read your comment above. Stay warm.
Thanks bc... We really love it here. Once you adjust to the different climate, and you know what to expect and know you'll survive, you just relax, do what you have to do, and enjoy. Amazing how easy it is to adapt to a totally different circumstance. And NOW, I get to tease the Canadian about how cold she gets... :)
You need to do audiobooks because your voice is so relaxing
As long as I don't put you to sleep, I'll call that a win!
Haha !! Well any way...the floor is beautiful ! 😍
😊 thank you
Good job Al.
Thanks. I'm happy with the results.
Your place is looking so good. The tranquility is evident. Having watched the transformation of your project from the building you both have done a wonderful job.
We're very happy with the result ourselves! Sharon would love more company, but when we simply want to relax and enjoy nature, there's no place like home..
Sweet ! ❤
Angel is a bundle of raw energy. I don't know how you guys will keep up with her. I think the sealer works for the deck.
She's got enough energy to keep 10 old farts busy! Sealer seems to be the trend. Thanks!
I vote for the Thompson sealer. 😊
Thanks!
Australian leg hound....haha ! What a cutie...I can see she's going to keep you busy ! You certainly enjoy her presence !! ❤
She's a fireball of energy for sure! We have to keep her occupied or she tends to find ways to interact with her, and usually not good ways. I'm thinking I'll teach her Mahjong.
Beautiful pup :)
She is, but she's a handful! Her Dingo ancestry is coming out in full force!
Yard is looking great !! I see the pile of tree stumps still waiting for a match ! That will 'light up your life " !! Haha ! Love your house. You 2 have done such a great job on your build , inside and out !! Hope you're finding time to sit back and enjoy your efforts !! Thanks for the update !
Thanks! We're waiting for either a 3 or 4 day soaking rain, or a good deep snow after all the leaves have fallen before we fire up that pile! It's going to burn hard and fast for a while and then probably for another week or so before it's over with. So we've got to be ready to stay here for that time to make sure it doesn't re-ignite or catch anything near it on fire. And thank you for the compliment on the house. We are really proud of it as you can imagine! Two old farts actually DID it (and didn't kill ourselves or each other while we did, Imagine THAT!). Little miss Angel is taking care of any free time we might have, but we're LOVING it! Thanks for the comments!
He did an amazing job clearing out all those stumps for you. I was curious if your lines running from your solar panels to the power shack were in any danger while he was escavating?
No, the lines were buried down the middle of the drive and cut through all of the roots. If you'll notice in one of the stump extractions next to the drive, when the stump comes up, it pulls some a root with it that pulls up the dirt in a nice straight line. That's where the trencher had cut the ditch. Besides, Val would have killed us......
Love the new puppy. The Family and I really need to come down there soon. Love Ya Auntie.
You should!
Ok...i confess , i watched this video at 2x the speed. 😅. Well most of it. The new puppy is adorable !! If you set that huge pile of stumps on fire I'll probably be able to see it from my house !! (Central Ohio ) Haha !! You neighbors are awesome folks but i must say you have a huge mess to clean up in your yard. The work is never done. Guess thats a good thing. 👍
Let us know if you do!
To be honest....night time would be better view. Anyway you almost need to be there ! 😊
The wife is afraid to have a big fire going at night since we wouldn't be able to keep an eye on it all night (she worries about it catching the woods on fire). but if we can get a few folks together to sit around and enjoy it, I think we could convince her to let me do it.
Happy Birthday Val !!!! 🎉
Thank you!!!!!!
Really enjoyed your "Walk on the Wild Side" video from the comfort of my chair here.
Wish you were here to enjoy it yourself!
What Alan said.
Happy Birthday from your friends at scenic Rancho Tirebiter Terxas !!!.
Thank you!!!!!
Can't wait to spend that 15K too, haha. :)
I'm very impressed, they look beautiful.
Thank you for the compliment. Valantine has the patience to do all of the little things that are so important to achieving a good result. We're fortunate to have an endless supply of beautiful wood right from our 30 acres. We just had some beautiful black cherry milled by our local Amish friends for us that the wife wants to use to make all of our furniture. She's already made two queen beds, a dresser, night stands, an oak desk for me, her kitchen island and some of the kitchen cabinets. Oh, and we built the entire house holding it all....
That looks really nice, I'll have to show the wife! I'll get a planer out of the deal.
Wow ! Love your kitchen ! You guys did a fabulous job on the counter tops !! I'm sure it's rewarding to look back to all of your accomplishments...looking forward to more videos ! 😊
Thanks for the support! We're getting excited to be close to finishing the kitchen. We'll have the Kitchen Island build and our Kitchen Cabinet Build videos up soon. We're getting some nice weather for once, so spending a bit of time outside getting some outdoor projects done. We'll post videos of that later as well. In the mean time, THANKS for subscribing and Commenting! It really helps!
😅
Nicely Done!
I've got some GREAT Neighbors! Thanks!
Well done neighbor.
Yes it was!
Nicely done!!❤
Thanks! We've completed part of the last section and will be finishing up the entire project in the next day or two. We'll post an update once all of the countertops are in place so you can get an idea of how the overall project looks. But yeah, we're pretty happy with how it's coming together!
Thanks ;) hopefully the other 2 go as smoothly.
Wow! Great job.
Thank you! Valantine has a real affinity for woodworking. (And the patience it takes to do the job well.) I knew I'd found the right woman when I took her shopping with me at the local Big Box builder store and she was excited about all of the cool tools!
Thank you so much !!
You should be proud...that's awesome !! ❤
I'm very proud of Valantine. She's the one who really did all of the work, and she really does put her heart & soul (and based upon the time it takes her to recover, her body as well) into everything she does. You'll love her Kitchen Island project too!
@@alvalonline ok...looking forward to the kitchen island project!!
@@vickiferko23 Starting the planning today. Wish me luck!
Great job! That countertop looks so nice!
Thanks so much! We're very happy with it considering it started out as a tree outside our windows!
@@alvalonline so cool!
Thank you so much!
It would help if you planned to construct a drawbridge for the next rainy season. Clear out those drain pipes and let the ducks have better traffic flow. lol
I'd actually love to be able to do that! We'll be installing a livestock gate on the entrance side of the drive just in front of the creek at some point, but a remotely controlled drawbridge would be awesome!
Neighbor did a my-t- fine job there !! Nice tractor ! Your back in business....😊
We're lucky here with some great neighbors near us. And yes, that's a VERY nice tractor! One of these days we'll have one so we can manage these kinds of issues ourselves. Just a little too much to try with just a shovel and rake!
So sorry about the mess !! I'm new subscriber to your channel. What state are you located in ?
Thanks for your kind thoughts. We're in upstate New York. Thankfully our home is located higher up on the property, so the flooding was well below us down our drive. We'll have the driveway repaired tomorrow morning by some amazing neighbors! And THANKS for Subscribing!
Beautiful Cabin. Looking forward to following!!
I'm in the early stages of learning to edit videos, so it will probably take me a little longer to get content uploaded, but we've got a LOT of things in progress that should make for some interesting viewing. The wife has become a real craftsperson and is building her own butcher block countertops, a kitchen island, some other furniture, and we'll be restoring a small wood stove to like new. The acreage will always provide a lot of material as well. With 30 acres of hardwoods (Maples mostly) and miles of trails through them, creeks and streams, deer, fox, coyotes, wild turkeys and more, there is always something going on. We're also going to tap the maples for syrup, and we've got loads of Amish neighbors who show us new ways to do stuff. If you've got any ideas or things you'd like to see, leave a comment or 4 and we'll add those to the growing list! And THANKS!
It's definitely better than what we saw in ottawa. Could barely drive at one point. Love ya aunt Val
Just take care and be careful! Love ya back! 🙂
Hard to believe those two old folks built that entire house they're in!
It's just me yakkin'
That is a very clever idea. Your wife is hot btw..lol.
Love the contrast from riser to tread.
Yeah, after seeing it like that, we decided the new treads should be natural as well.
What a beautiful day. You can almost feel the breeze watching the video. Your garden looks good too.
Thanks! We love it here on days like that. Summers here make up for all that cold and snow during the 6 months of winter.
I'm doing sheet metal skirting
I'm at proces building a deck very similar
It's taken a lot of work, but we think it ended up being worth the extra effort and time it took. Good luck with your project!
That’s amazing looking good 😊
Thanks! She's determined to get this house project finished and looking the way she wants it.
Let her know what you think! She's pretty amazing!
yes on the birds during winter, but be careful w/the squirrels- they CAN become a nuisance!
We've already found out. Two new families with all of their new children have been visiting on a regular basis. Since mommy and daddy aren't afraid of us now, the kids don't seem to be either. Time will tell.....
Cant remember if you said, but is running a power line to your house out of site price wise? I know you did a well and was thinking you were not going to have to, but is seem like a wire would sure make life easier!
Running a line to the house would have cost us more than our entire solar system and we'd still be stuck with monthly payments, power outages and keeping corporate CEOs in yachts. I'd been researching off-grid living for a few years prior to making this move, so I'd already pretty much made up my mind to do it. The huge expense just to run a line to the house was just the final nail in the connected coffin. We've never looked back.
All the prep work made the difference. Once we had everything measured, cut and ready for the floor joists, it was super strong and level with the existing sub floor. We made sure to have everything lined up so that the 3/4" T&G flooring we laid down over the old section and our new section were nice and even. Made for a good even surface to put our finished flooring on once we were ready to install that.
One of many to fall on your land.
You ain't kiddin' brother!
Looking back at what you two have accomplished is just amazing.
I feel that way every single day! When you're taking it one day at a time, the amount of work really adds up over the course of a couple of years!
10 months seems to be the newest info I can find? George in Spruce Pine
We've added a lot more content and I'll be doing some actual video editing as soon as I learn how! I'll keep posting raw videos in the meantime. Thanks!
