some people think this is anti Semitic and that Tolkien was a racist. but I think that's a complete bullcrap. first off, using a race for inspiration to create another race isn't racist. second, the definition of racism is to look down upon or diminish another race. third, in order for Tolkien to be racist by using Jews as inspiration to create the dwarves would only work if he diminished them or made them inferior. Now dwarves in the Lord of the Rings or Middle Earth Universe are not some lousy, stupid, or mistreated race. Yes elves and dwarves had their fair share of killing each other and orcs did attack them. but that's between the actions of the individual not the People as a whole. the orcs didn't fight the dwarves on their own, orcs were ruled by the dark lords and were thus compelled to fight the dwarves against their will. you might say that how the dwarves were created might be diminishing, but i don't think so, since that is purely out of creativity and probably based on other mythologies, not inspired by Jews or to diminish Jews since Tolkien is no fool and knows the Importance of the Jews from the Bible, and weren't some kind of second half made creation to accepted by Eru or Alluvatar (the God of Middle Earth excuse my spelling). Rather Tolkien was inspired by how the Jews lived and dressed and their way of singing and merry making even though they go through hard times. he mentions the Jewels which might refer to the fact that Jews in many areas in Europe couldn't own land and thus had to find a different way of making money to feed their families which lead them to become Jewelist and other shopkeepers. so in conclusion i think tolkien is awesome and is the last person on God's Green Earth to hate jews.
