I think it;s a really underated synth - it's basically a moogy chord generator - I consider the sequencer a bonus!

It is. I found out about their existence at 9am this morning, and have got very little else done today as a result.

Depends on what “learning the device” means to you. Or, put differently, what you want to do with it. You can pick up the basics of the Solar 42f quite quickly as most of its components aren’t that complicated. Still, you can go very deep with it too which makes it a great instrument to grow with. So I guess you can get started with pleasing results in just a few hours and you will get better and better the more you play it. Of course, some knowledge about how a synthesiser works (like what is a VCO, an LFO, a mixer etc.) will help. Also, some basic ideas about music (what makes for an interesting piece (contrast in timbre and energy for instance) etc.) will help you get where you want. On the other hand, it’s definitely not your standard first synthesiser. It’s a very specific and niche approach to making music or sounds. Still, I’m sure it’s very enjoyable for an absolute beginner as long as you don’t want to force it to make a banger techno track :)

I'd say it would depend a lot on if you know what you want it to sound like. The touch sensitive keyboard can be mapped to different musical scales, but the drone synths aren't in any scale. You just have to tune each oscillator in each drone by ear until it sounds like something you want, it might be a harmonic chord or something really dissonant. Then you need to figure out how to work with patch cables and route different things of the synth into different places to change the sound in amazing, sometimes horrible ways. It's a really cool, really expensive, and really strange synth. And I definitely want one xD

For this patch the subharmonicon is going into the preamp for some extra colour, but ordinarily I'd run it into the external audio input on the back - either way this means it's benefitting from the distortion circuit and reverb on the Solar 42 which are both very lush. Voice 3 is being triggered by one of the sequencer clocks on the Sub, but the sub itself just has an open VCA so is droning rather than using its sequencers.

Poly Cinematic was doing that work here, which is a great single-module for chords! Also highly recommend SWN, and the Subharmonicon can do some really wonderful chord work too

Sorry for the slow reply! I use it in a few different ways actually - sometimes it's not doing much at all and just acts as part of the end-of-chain for my setup - but currently I have 3 channels in use, with the AR on one, OT on another and the Minifreak and A4 on the third. The extra channel is used almost exclusively for my turntable. I'll then use the PX5 to mix and EQ, feed audio to the OT, use the onboard effects and the filter. The filter is really good on the XONE's and is super useful for master filtering!
