In this long demo, Tom, along with the help of Adam, describes in detail the team's brand new remote control sailboat with auto/manual canting keel mechanism. All design, manufacturing and testing of the sailboat's original components were done by the team.
Our boat's key features include:
-Fiberglass planing type hull
-Automatic and manual canting keel functionality
-High aspect ratio rig with square top main sail
-Flexible tapered mast
-Adjustable centerboard height
-Arduino with accelerometer to control the auto-keel (with our very own program written in-house!)

This process took less than 30 minutes. Doesn't shifting the mass also shift the centre of gravity and bouyancy? Not to mention the enormous load placed on the pivot point when rotated 90 degrees.

Or you can shave lead weights and pour the shavings plus epoxy into a lite-ply winged keel.

What did youUse to make the actual keel..?I tried looking for a carbon fiber airfoil shaped rod but couldn't find something anywhere near what I wanted...
We made it ourselves, with a custom mold, out of foam and fiberglass.
It's an incomplete documentary of an otherwise very interesting project. You really should make the effort to show it in it's functioning environment..... windy, working, planing.... Great concept though

Since we've graduated, the boat hasn't seen much evolution. Although it has been out in the water, we haven't filmed it. Currently, it's in the possession of another Capstone team at a different university. They reached out to us to see if they could draw some inspiration from ours, so we lent it to them. :)

Why are you all wearing breathing masks outdoors? don't tell me health and safety freaked you all out? it would have been nice to see the end product lead sets really fast you could have cracked the mold open in about 30 seconds after the pour.
