I was born in Oldham and know nothing about this side of Lancashire. It is so very different from the mill towns, on that side of the county.
Brings back memories as we also used to haul out of Pilkingtons
Great to see old transport companies of St Helens, the wagon and drag in the Fibreglass livery is of particular interest to me as l was Distribution Manager in the 1980’s at Fibreglass the wagon shown preceded me but we had several in my time along with a variety of custom designed vehicles to carry our mainly light weight products. Ken Gaskell and l joined Fibreglass together in 1960 and we became best mates, Ken Being my ‘Best Man’ in 1965. Ken went on to work for Dennis Heaton’s transport before branching out on his own.His first vehicle was an old furniture van which we employed running products to local warehouslng companies like Fred Davies, Beeches and Sutton’s. Ken of course went on to bigger things. To be around St Helens in the 60’s with its vibrant industry and very active social scene( we saw the Beatles 3 times at the Plaza, the last occasion Please Please Me was No1 in the charts!) was terrific for us teenagers, the best time of our lives.
What no Tommy Lloyd transport!!! Good to see the F&G Pie lorries though.
Would be nice if the date & name of the places the photos were taken.
I caught my first little fish on Luggy Lane Dam round about 1970 as a 5 year old. Lovely footage of a much more civilised and respectful era.
When St Helens was a beautiful town.
Left to join the RN at 18. Best decision I ever made. I've lived all over the UK and St. Helens is the worst town. Depressing, dirty and forlorn.
My Royal marine family vietnam War northern Ireland Grandad best shot in his Regiment Liverpool guards WW1 battle of the somme 4 survived 4 buried in normandy four bla bla in Ginger Mcains biograohy family friend so was the landlord of the crown in birkdalae and the portland never drank in theGEORGE,,😅😅😇SEFTON COUNCIL BEEN CORRUPT SINCE IT SOLD SEFTON PARK TO LIVERPOOL
I spent 57 of my 81 years living in or around Sintelins so many of the places shown are familiar to me. I attended Windlehurst Primary (1945-51) and Cowley GS (1952-7)and worked for my families business Len Beaman Ltd from 1963-83.
We lived on Clinkham Wood estate & I bussed to Windlehurst School so I never saw the town. Interesting though, & I love the accompanying music.
Wish i could see for real what my nan told me they were too poor for dr never mind cameras her father was an alcoholic and drank his wages away my great grandmother died age 34 giving birth to her 11th child then the drunken pig got another slut pregnant and my nan was the eldest and expected to be mother to 11 kids she ran away from home to southport where I live now abd its hell due to leaving Europe no food on the shelf CONSERVATIVE AGAIN
What was the pub at the rear entrance to Pilkingtons
I think it was called the Phoenix
such a pity with the march of 'progress' that like lots of towns, we lost so much character. bring back the cobbled streets, iron lamp posts & fountains :)
Does anyone know what the corner shop was at the top of Lugsmore lane at Toll bar. In later years I think it was a launderette?
My home town
My nans during ww1
Woodward parr st Helen's
What a lovely blast from the past I live in st Helen's I have done since the 70s I've been living in sutton since 1977 in junction lane and then you could buy anything now it's all takeaways and hairdressers .I loved st Helen's town centre the was so much you could buy I loved the markets all the fruit shops and butchers you could buy anything there the sweet stall had that many different kinds of sweets I got my sons baby stuff from a stall on the market that sold all baby wear they should of left the open markets they said it was an improvement poppy cock it was a stamp for the death of st Helen's the inst a fruit shop in st Helen's the last one closed down the are so many flats being made out of shops it's a crime the council should have a good old look at what they are doing to our town
I've lived in St Helens for more than 70 years and can state that the Council (every one since the 50s) has made the town progressively worse for residents and visitors. St Helens will never recover. Communities destroyed completely and valued pubs closed or turned into flats . Biggest mistake was closing Rainhill Mental Hospital. Clueless officials and Councillors over 70 years -- We never had a chance
@@greenbanker1 ohni know that this council couldn't win a raffle if they only bought a ticket .they are on about the knocking hardware centre down and make a bigger bus station and knock st nearest market down and ghe shops and clothes other centre down passed Halifax and modernise thchurch Street they only needed to put fruit veg shops in butchers and other groups in I say a primark it would save us going to Liverpool and decent clothes chops and toy shops bakers like it used to have not more flats
My mum was brought up Sutton in fisher st , just near you my nan lived there from the 30s till she passed in the 80s.she a dedicated Herbert st lndependent methodist church in Herbert st ( ps so was I ) spent a lot of my time at my nans as my dad was a shift worker at pilks and my mum worked at the co op on peckers rd .my dad was chairman of the St. Helens football fc on houghton rd for many years he was chairman when we won the vase cup which was a great day for all . I played there for many years myself .im 68 now yuk,!and was a pupil at robins lane juniors school . Lovely vid mate pity that bloke doing the voice had a Wigan accent ha ha
@@ianjones2187 hi Ian when I remarried in 1992 we moved to Junction Lane when we first was here all the shops were so busy you could buy anything now its takeways hairdressers the handymans pet shop launderette one chemist I think I'm the only one that is a private house the other are rented my husbands mum was brought up in Herbert St my grandson used to go to Friday club at Herbert St Church I'd never move from here cos I love my little house by the way we are more or less the same age I'm 69 next month love fran xxx
How I wish I could go there someday ♥
Its not far from Liverpool on the buz 😂😂🇮🇪☘✌
7:07 I think that’s Ormskirk St and the corner building on the right is my family’s medical practice that we had for 3 generations Dr Fox, Dr Denis O’ Donovan and Dr Barry O’Donovan
Yes, I remember the O’Donovan doctors well as they were my GP’s from being a child 1947 onward. Also in the same surgery were Dr’s Coffey, Burrell and Mather. The receptionist was another family member of yours, a Miss O’Donovan - very efficient, yet kind at heart I found.
@@margaretduvall9630 thanks for the reply Margaret. Glad to hear you were well looked after by the family. Keep safe n well.
Left Thatto Heath in 1975 don’t get back much now. Brings back memories
Fantastic photos there.
Is there a valid explanation for the scores of ancient armour and swords bearing numerous allegedly unreadable inscriptions kept in the museums of Europe? How to interpret the mysterious signs and symbols on the coronation mantles of Charlemagne and other Kings? How come it that the allegedly unreadable inscriptions, signs, and symbols start to make sense as soon as Slavonic, Turkic, and Arab alphabets are used to decode them? Welcome to New chronology!
crap video would be good if anyone could actually read the writing ...
thank you
Destroyed by an idiot led council, put there by a public that blindly votes labour. Go a few miles down the road and see what a good, forward planning council can achieve. Even Widnes eclipse's St Helens.
You mean destroyed by Thatcherism
@@louisee7339 How long are you going to blame Thatcher, for the incompetence of others.
York like York castle because York is my favourite castle
Lmfao real paranormal activity going on there 😂
Loved it, I remember some old buildings, not old enough to remember most of them, wish this town was still the same as it was then
I wish I was older and could see how my nan described it she couldn't read or write and worked at pilkingtons age 11
Thatto Heath road and dam, Bates crescent, luggy Lane and Toll bar... amazin footage I grew up there in the 70’s and 80’s 👍

This brings back so many memories for my grandad dad mum and grandma plus it's let me se what my town looked like ages ago
It looked a lot better then than it does now, made me nostalgic, great vid.
It's a slum now. Glad I got out.
Thanks for a great video.I never thought I would see them again.
What a fabulous look back at St Helens. I was born here in 1957 and remember so clearly those wonderful old buildings markets and parks. Visiting again a few years ago I was horrified to see what destruction has taken place, sadly like a lot of old Lancashire towns the heart has been ripped out and replaced with what exactly I find hard to describe.
jamesbpl123 tom Tom van vollenhovan
Agreed, this town will never be the same
We were born the same year, and like you ever time I visit I'm amazed at how little investment the council attracts.
My nan roma from parr st Helen's married a hind from southport best shot in his regiment Liverpool guards ww1 and the battle of the somme survivor and 3 of his brothers four buried in Normandy four stayed home to look after the sisters and the free range chicken and pig farm and the veg fruit trees and bushes and my grandad was and is still my hero could handle any dog like me European working breed doberman pinscher bitch😂😂only if she senses someone is evil roma gypsies can tell fortunes Irish travellers are not gypsies xx

Best supermarket ever. Enjoyed working there for a few years and they had a great choice of high quality foods. Enjoyed the Xmas season as there was some great products. Today's supermarkets don't seem to have any soul or pleasant design compared to Kwick save.
think so richard
Were these taken at the Rainhill Trials celebrations?
