I want to catalog every trail and forest service road I can. I live in Arizona so that's where most of my content will come from but I hope to expand to other states for multi-day trips. I don't typically do extreme trails because I'm more interested in seeing places and terrains than I am into climbing obstacles but sometimes you never know what you'll run into and I've overbuilt my Jeep for the trails I go on.
Arizona - Road trip in snow Flagstaff, Mormon Lake, and Payson
Nestled in the heart of Arizona, the towns of Flagstaff, Mormon Lake, and Payson each offer a unique charm and diverse experiences that make them must-visit destinations. From the pine-covered mountains to serene lakes and quaint communities, these areas showcase the natural beauty and cultural richness of northern Arizona.
Flagstaff is a bustling mountain town that feels like the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Sitting at an elevation of about 7,000 feet, it enjoys cool summers and snowy winters, making it a year-round destination. The San Francisco Peaks, home to Arizona’s highest point, Humphreys Peak, dominate the skyline and offer incredible hiking and skiing opportunities. The town itself is vibrant, with a historic downtown filled with cozy cafes, breweries, and local shops. Flagstaff is also known for its connection to the stars-literally. It’s home to the Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered. Visiting the observatory offers a fascinating look at the cosmos, made even more special by Flagstaff's designation as the world’s first International Dark Sky City.
A short drive from Flagstaff takes you to Mormon Lake, a tranquil spot that feels like a hidden retreat. Mormon Lake is Arizona’s largest natural lake, but its size fluctuates dramatically depending on rainfall. During wet seasons, the lake expands into a stunning expanse of water surrounded by lush meadows and tall ponderosa pines. Even in dry years, when the lake is more of a marshland, it still serves as a peaceful haven for wildlife, including elk, deer, and migratory birds. The small community of Mormon Lake Village adds a rustic charm to the area, with its lodge, general store, and seasonal events that bring locals and visitors together. Whether you're camping, horseback riding, or just taking in the serene views, Mormon Lake is a perfect escape into nature.
Payson, located further south, is often referred to as the "Heart of Arizona." Surrounded by the Tonto National Forest and nestled within the Mogollon Rim, Payson is a gateway to stunning scenery and outdoor activities. The Rim itself is a dramatic escarpment that provides sweeping views of forests, valleys, and rugged cliffs. It’s a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and anglers, with countless trails and fishing spots to explore. Payson also boasts a rich history, with ties to Native American cultures and the Old West. The Rim Country Museum and Zane Grey Cabin are excellent places to learn about the area’s heritage.
What I love most about these three areas is how distinct yet interconnected they feel. In one trip, you can experience Flagstaff's lively mountain town vibe, the quiet serenity of Mormon Lake, and the rustic charm of Payson. Each destination offers a different perspective on Arizona's natural beauty and cultural richness, making them ideal for both adventure-seekers and those looking to unwind. Whether it’s stargazing in Flagstaff, spotting wildlife at Mormon Lake, or hiking the Mogollon Rim near Payson, these towns leave an unforgettable impression.
