Lunge-Feeding Humpback Whales!! | Behind the Shots with a Wildlfie Photographer
In Monterey Bay, California, while out with the beautiful folks at Discovery Whale Watch, we came across a group of hungry, hungry humpback whales.
I managed to photograph a feeding behavior known as lunge-feeding, where the whales lunge up from beneath and grab a nice big mouthful of yummy food, with their heads breaking the surface afterward. The seabirds swarm in to grab any fish that the whales might have missed or were stunned when they came up.
This photo has the honour of being placed on my coffee cup, the highest honour a photo can receive in my household.
I took this in late 2019 with the Canon 7D Mark ii, and Canon 100-400mmlens.

The endemic, rare, and beautiful Nēnē | Behind the shots with a wildlife photographer
มุมมอง 712 ปีที่แล้ว
I headed to Hawaii in search of a goose. Because what other reason is there to go there? I spent some time on Oahu where reports of Nēnē were not exactly regular. But I just so happened to have a few friends living in Maui, where reports seemed a bit more reliable. So I hopped on a plane to Maui, looking for Nēnē, a lovely goose endemic to Hawaii. Come hear about how I shot this photo. I took t...
Pukeko photography in New Zealand's wetlands | Behind the Shots with a Wildlife Photographer
มุมมอง 1092 ปีที่แล้ว
On a cold rainy day back in the first COVID-19 lockdown, I took a walk through the suburbs of Wellington, New Zealand, to a local river. I found myself amongst a family of Pukeko - one of our common native wetland birds. In this video, I'll go through how I approached these birds, and the exact camera settings that I used to take advantage of the lighting conditions on this day. This photo is a...
Trials at the Bachelor Colony | New Zealand Fur Seal | Wild World

This video includes close-up footage of fresh, deep gashes in the blubber of a New Zealand Fur Seal. If you're not comfortable seeing this, please click away. When it's the breeding season for the New Zealand Fur Seal, the large bulls exclude all the other males from the breeding colony. Any male fur seals that are too small to compete are evicted. These young and small male New Zealand Fur Sea...
Killer Whale Breaching! | Behind the Shots with a Wildlife Photographer
มุมมอง 1222 ปีที่แล้ว
In Monterey Bay, California, our boat chugged out for about an hour's drive until we came across a pod of four Killer Whales (or Orca), munching down on a fresh California Sea Lion. This large male leaped out of the water three times, and I managed to snag this shot on his third breach. You can tell that this is a male by his dorsal fin - large, and pointing up to the sky like a big old isoscel...
Northern Royal Albatross in flight!! | Behind the Shots with a Wildlife Photographer
มุมมอง 572 ปีที่แล้ว
The Northern Royal Albatross is unique, in that it has a breeding colony a short boat ride or drive away from Dunedin, New Zealand. Most of the other albatross colonies around the world are... a bit more tricky to reach. I shot this photo on a trip with Monarch Wildlife Cruises. A young Northern Albatross was flying around on a windy day, engaging in courtship activities with all the young alba...
This California Quail takes parenting a bit too far... | Wild World
มุมมอง 2.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The California Quail can have up to 12 chicks at a time. Fresh, small, and curious, they wander around exploring their surroundings. This dad has had a bit too much of their fun. Maybe he's a bit nervous about how exposed they are. He aggressively forces them back into the cover of the grass, making sure that they are nice and safe. Yes, yes, I know. They're an introduced species to New Zealand...
Close up with a Hector's Dolphin! | Behind the Shots with a Wildlife Photographer
มุมมอง 522 ปีที่แล้ว
While on a trip with Monarch Wildlife Cruises, we were approached by a curious and friendly pod of Hector's Dolphins. With no time to switch to a wide-angle, I used my zoom lens to get a close-up on the details of this individual as it rode the bow wave of the Monarch. I shot this photo in early 2021 with the Canon 7D Mark ii, and Canon 100-400mm lens. This photo is available for purchase!!! wi...
The life cycle of the New Zealand Fur Seal in less than 2 minutes

On the rocky shores of New Zealand, you'll find tiny pups, giant bull males, and dedicated overworked females. The New Zealand Fur Seal, or Kekeno, lives a tough life filled with playfights, real fights, plenty of pregnancies, and more pups than you can count with your fingers. This is the life cycle of the New Zealand Fur Seal in less than 2 minutes (ish). Filmed with the Blackmagic Pocket Cin...
The Rainbow Bee-Eater catches it's prey in midair! | Wild World
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In tropical far north Australia, you'll find the Rainbow Bee-Eater. As their name suggests, they're adapted to eat bees, as well as other small flying insects. Their hunting style is fascinating to watch. Perching on a branch, they scan back and forth until they spot their prey. Then they leap from their perch and catch the bee in mid-air. Once they've landed, they slap the stinger against the ...

The Northern Royal Albatross starts off its life as a baby. Just like most of us do! What follows next is a trial of growth, travel, squid, love, and maturity. Male Quails are very special. A male is alawys in alert mode. That's the reason why they are also as Pet Quails so stressed and not easy to handle. Their highly protective nature makes it hard to let them feel save and loved by a human caretaker.

Oh, what adorable little birds! I wish we had the here in the UK but we have our own lovely birds too, of course, like the Blue Tit and the British Robin (which is VERY different to the American Robin and smaller and cuter, although the American Robin is lovely too but just bigger and different!). Also, I see that the female Double Eyed Fig Parrot doesn't have as much red in her markings as the male does. That seems to be the way with birds in the wild - often males are more vividly coloured and the females have duller colouring, which I think is so that females when on the nest, protecting eggs, is less visible to predators and so should be safer from any attack!

What a stunning shot! I'm relatively new to Wildlife, switching from equine sports photography. NZ based as well (never really been anywhere else) - so primary focus is of course, birds. I was surprised by the aperture! I generally sit as low as I can go (2.8 on my 70-200mm) so I can bump shutter speed - but do you prefer a higher aperture? TIA!

I didn't notice until you pointed it out, that the raindrops help provide additional focal points, so that your eyes kind of skitter around the feathers and water drops before returning up to the focal point of the beak and eye. I like how you took an aspect of fur seal biology and turned it into a story. So much innovation! Bachelor colonies don't seem like great places to be, with aggressive adolescent fur seals looking for a fight. But your fur seal lifecycle in 2 minutes video also didn't sell the benefits of being a female fur seal or a baby fur seal for that matter. I guess this makes me happy to be a human and not a fur seal. So thanks for that!

Hi Pete .... thanks very much for putting up your pics n videos. I have always liked the mollymawk. When I was a kid growing up in Point England (a big state housing area in Tamaki) we used to walk to school in Glen Innes. One day, we came across a mollymawk. We stood around quietly looking at this great bird, dead. I said it was an albatross but another boy said it was an mollymawk, adding they often flew inland particularly during storms. The mollymawk has been a bit of a hero for me ... not as flash as its cousin but tougher (this probably all wrong but ... :). I have rece tly gone back to my first love, painting and am in the midst of prepping for radiation treatment. I am struggling with a paintiing titled "When the storm comes, the mollymawks fly inland". So hou ideos are inspiring me.
