The Amarnath Cave, located in the Himalayas at an altitude of 3,888 meters, is a sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The cave is approximately 45 kilometers from Pahalgam, a beautiful hill station in Jammu and Kashmir.
Legend:
Lord Shiva chose this cave to reveal the secrets of immortality to his consort, Goddess Parvati. To ensure that no living being could hear their conversation, Shiva created a mystical barrier, and the cave was formed.
Discovery:
The cave was discovered by a local shepherd named Buta Malik in the 15th century. Malik was rewarded with a bag of coal by the saint who owned the cave. Upon returning home, he found that the coal had turned into gold.
Shivling:
Inside the cave stands the magnificent Shivling, a naturally formed ice stalagmite, which is believed to symbolize Lord Shiva. The Shivling grows and shrinks with the phases of the moon, reaching its maximum height during the full moon.
Pilgrimage:
The Amarnath Yatra, a 43-day pilgrimage, takes place every year during the months of July and August. Devotees from all over the world trek to the cave to worship the Shivling and seek blessings.
