Your Personal Librarian

เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 มิ.ย. 2019
Hello! My name is Sara, and I have known I wanted to be a school librarian since I was in the 9th grade. I have worked in university libraries, public libraries, school libraries, with a library vendor, and I spent one strange summer at a book depository! On this channel, I will talk about various aspects of librarianship and also review some of the books I read. My major goal is to start a community where other librarians and I share tips and ideas, because there is truly no better source of professional development than sharing our lessons learned with each other!

Suggestions for Middle Grade Romance Novels
มุมมอง 1.3K5 ปีที่แล้ว
If you work with middle school students, maybe you too have come across this dilemma. There are 5th and 6th graders who keep requesting "romance novels." You want to give them what they want, but you need to find something age-appropriate as well. (Easier said than done!) In this video I give a few suggestions on books to use in this situation. Non-Fiction Genrefication in a School Library
มุมมอง 3.3K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Genrefying a library collection is gaining in popularity and becoming more common, but one quite controversial topic is the genrefication of the non-fiction section. In this video I walk you through why and how I went from the Dewey Decimal System to a more bookstore-like classification system in my school library. This is not for everyone, but I am happy to answer any questions should you have...

A School Librarian on Genrefication - Things to Do, Traps to Avoid, and Surprising Benefits
มุมมอง 11K5 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I describe what genrefication is and why I decided to genrefy my school library. There is no one right way to do this, and I do not believe it is right for every library and every population. However, if you are thinking about it, in this video I share a lot of information about my planning, my process, and the end result. It is a long video, so below you’ll see some general time...

Not logical to do 3 initials for genre. Id assume it was author... Put genre stickers on girl ! Glad to know you understand the confusion
Greetings, Ma'am. I think your perspective on cataloging books is really fascinating. The one thing that I've noticed is how you're into making things easy-breezy for kids by designing an array of stuff in a pattern that a kiddo can understand effortlessly. Well, that's super efficient as well. I feel that I like it. You said, "It's their library, not mine." That's so nice of you. You're the best! Thank you!😊
Is it possible to genrefy a K-8 library? Should I include reading-level stickers?
What joy to see all those beautifully lined up call numbers 😍
Hi! Do you think genrefication is appropriate for Elementary School students or does it matter the grade level? Thanks :)
what is "MOMGA?" graphic novels? Very helpful video thanks
Manga are comics or graphic novels that originate from Japan. Here are some popular examples: www.goodreads.com/list/show/489._Best_Manga_Book_Ever
❤
This is so logical. All libraries should be like this. Our Central library in Cape Town do this for some books, like SciFi/Fantasy and Crime, and LGBTQ books get pink stickers. That's the only category I miss in your video, LGBT, otherwise amazing.
I have a question! What do you do with holiday specific fiction picture books? I have the grouped right now because no one wants Christmas in July or summer vacation books in the middle of a snow storm. I really want to label them with a colour and symbol for their time of year. I’ve been fighting the urge. I have all of our books in an excel spreadsheet (just a few thousand so nothing crazy to track) but I crave doing a pivot table to track the level of reader our library is pulled to and where the holes are to identify and fill them. Thank you for sharing this with us! Beautiful library!
It's Christmas
The number of which book it is in the series 🙌🏻 Yes!! I find it so hard when the binding is covered where the number is and it’s so hard to track it all the time 😅
I absolutely love your raw honesty. Doing this Genrefication takes AGES! You've been an amazing inspiration to me. Thank you!!! Took on being the Teacher Librarian 2 months ago at a Special needs school, and I have taken some leaves out of your book 😉
I also want more dragons! I’m still pretty new here and am loving discovering new channels. Subscribed
Would be interesting to have your list of categories and breakdowns within the catagory.
Amazing! I was looking at doing something like this in our middle school library, and this was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you, so much!
I understand the benefits for school libraries but why in the public library? Isn't this an oversimplified system and doesn't teach the kids system that's well-established?? My library is changing and I'm not on board at all with this.
Hi! Happy to subscribe and follow you. Librarians are some of my favorite people.
What do you do with the books that you got rid of?
Welcome to Booktube. Draw a seat up to the Booktube table, it's a fun bookish community here. I like the cool stop animation intro. Liked and subscribed :)
I’ve been reading the ARC for the second book in the Secrets of Camp Nowhere series. It’s good so far….I enjoyed the first one pretty well and I like the fact that it features a deaf MC.
I haven't read those yet, but they look fantastic! Thanks for the rec!

Hello and welcome to booktube! Yes totally agree, would much rather read about a dragon than a divorce 🤣 all the best for your booktube journey 💕

Hi Sarah!! So happy to see you on BookTube! The Lord of the Flies is epic- I just re read it as an adult and it was a whole new experience
Ooh, yes... I really need to re-read it again! I love getting a new perspective on old favorites.
Thank you for your videos! You have an amazing library. For those of us who may not have the time in our schedules but want to genrefy nonfiction, I found that just using colorful and plentiful signage for the Dewey sections brought the collection to life for my students (I agree we all need to weed). 🙂Nonfiction was very popular with my younger students when they could see what those darned numbers were all about, and I didn't have to re-label the books. Now I'll add subfields to the catalog to match categories as you suggest. So helpful! All the best to you!
Keep doing videos ma'am. It was nice to watch.
Very informative 👏👌
I hope you'll update about The Reading Rush. I'm moving into a middle school library and love the idea of reading quickly some of the books in the collection. I went to the link you posted for the reading rush website, but it no longer works. Any help would be awesome!
Hi there! Here's an article about what happened with the Reading Rush. medium.com/bound-by-books/we-failed-what-happened-with-the-2020-reading-rush-1be904a6e334 The idea can easily be replicated elsewhere. You can also read this: bookwhisperer.com/2014/08/12/the-40-book-challenge-revisited/
Sheeeeee- you dont understand the way I fan girled seeing this video
Wow,that system makes so much sense, especially for hands-on kids! I will be the school librarian next year fo a small elementary school. There was no steady (nor expert)personell since the beginning, teachers were just trying the best to make it work. So the books were entered in bulk and trust me,a lot of it is a MESS. I panicked for a second thinking that I had to re-enter all in the correct categories but then I saw your videos..Genrefication makes the most sense in our case too,and I have to thank you for the inspiration and the guidance!🌟
Hi! I love what you are doing. But how do you know what genre each book is? Or if it’s a crossover of two then how do you decide? Thanks so much! Xx
I go off the main genre recommendation by the catalog (Follett) or sites like Goodreads. If it falls within multiple categories, I choose which one is the "main" category. Like many books have romance in them, but only some books are strictly romance without another huge plot/story such as a space battle or something. I read the summaries of the books as well as the reviews and put it where I think the readers who are most likely to enjoy it will find it.
We have no librarian so wanted to reorganize this summer. Where can I find the number codes and their genre. For example 1000-1500 are social studies or etc. can you help me please . I am a counselor.
Do you mean the Dewey Decimal System? Here's a quick guide: www.library.illinois.edu/infosci/research/guides/dewey/ or you can scan a book's ISBN number and it will suggest where to put it with this site: classify.oclc.org/classify2/
Yes that is it. Thank you so much had been going around in circles.
I'm collections manager for a k-12 school in Australia. We genrefied our fiction and non-fiction collection a few years ago and it has been an amazing success. I love seeing how other librarians have embraced this also. One other change we made was to display books 'face out' as much as possible, especially with fiction series. It's promoted a wonderful browsing culture for the students. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos!
Thank you ma'am it's very usefull video
really amazing info. but not able to view clearly. is it possible to zoom on the labels real slow as u show thanks
i read it and i would suggest that every parent and teacher who is moral and concious read this book first before ever giving it to a child. as the author is not covering certain topics but rather forcing adult contain on african middle schoolers: i ask these questions: why is so important for a middle schooler to be told that loving little boys bottom is good? how would a middle schooler knows that his gential should be put in bottom of another male? how would a middle schooler knows that he loves boys over girls? how would a middle schooler knows that he does not want to procreate, which is the very reason he has that kind of organ? why should a middle schooler be force to accept that her father prefer the bottom of a man rather than the gential of a woman, her mother? why is a middle schooler being force to accept her father rejection of her family union to screwing around with the bottom of a man? middle schoolers are not coming up with these ideas, worthless adults, immoral society, and evil authors such as this one is forcing it upon them. i wonder how the author came on this planet through the bottom of a man, this may explain why he feel the need to force his behavior upon unsuspecting parents, teachers and children, what a shame!
How did you find/make your shelf labels? The large vertical ones on the shelf highlighting the genre?
Hello! I asked my school's graphic design teacher to make them for me. I just told her the genres and the colors and she did the rest. Sorry I can't be more helpful!
@@ThisPerfectPiece That's great! How do you stand them up? Do you use a particular type of holder?
@@carolinearp5232 I used strong double-sided tape to attach them to the tall side of these www.target.com/p/plastic-magazine-file-clear-made-by-design-8482/-/A-53861311 I bought them in bulk from Demco and it works well!
