Can I suggest less editing on your videos? The zooming in and out and flicking around, blips everytime your face comes on screen is so annoying and distracting. Your advice is great, keep making videos!

Great video. One thing I do differently, not sure if it's better or worse. If create an idea in one project I think maybe a project on it's own. I click 'save as' then save as a different name then delete everything I don't want. Again great vid, thanks.

nice video man! i dont think rick is taht honest saying he has no technical knoledge.. he actually programmed the 808 he did his first records and played guitar on few records.. plus when you have a lifetime in a studio you can use any machine there if you want.. he just does not want to bu he knows how to work the machines.. he just plays the guru : )

I've been using Ableton since version 4, but I learned a couple of things here, so thank you for those. One thing I do differently though. I keep all tracks to 0db, only altering initially for the correct balance in sound (up or down, it makes no different at this stage). Then when it comes to gain staging, I will highlight all the tracks and bring down the volume of one track (still with the shift button down)and the rest will follow. This allows me to peak at -6db on the master every time, whilst maintaining the volume ratios I'd set previously.

On the plugins thing... I've been doing this for a short time and I've already created a few tracks that actually sound like music. I'll give my own creativity and love of music some credit... but I also have to give some credit to the amazing plugins, synths, orchestra libraries etc that I've spent (or wasted) money on. I get so much inspiration when I find a synth preset I love and immediately get ideas for a song. I'm also open to the help some of the plugins can give to form musical ideas, especially the virtual instruments like UJAM plugins. But my favorite thing is just collecting vsts and exploring experimenting with them even if I might never use one in a song. Its fun. But even with all of the help I get from my growing plugin collection, it hasn't kept me from learning to play piano and get as much music theory knowledge that I can.

Just remember that not every technique works for every person. I am most creative within the first two hours of waking up
