Chapter 6: Six Days And Over 30 Bottles Found At The Cleared Woodlands Site

This is the final hunt of the "Cleared Woodlands" series. There is a comprehensive follow up at the end.
Woodlands Dig Before It Is Buried
มุมมอง 138ปีที่แล้ว
This is one of the top three sites I've dug in three decades. It's sad to see it buried under the progression of suburban sprawl. However, we have saved many historic bottles from being destroyed.

A Casualty of The Pure Food And Drug Act

Curtice Bros. "Blue Label" ketchup was an early victim of the Pure Food and Drug Act. They were at one time more popular than Heinz. However, their refusal to remove the preservative benzoate from their product led to its demise.
Relic Hunting The Farm Dump
มุมมอง 912 ปีที่แล้ว
I've walked past their area many times and today I decided to hit a spot where there is some old car parts, appliances, and toys. The area is huge and I only attacked one spot... more to come.
The Depression Pit

I have only scratched the surface of this 30s-40s trash pit. Below it may lie earlier pre-prohibition bottles and relics. More coming soon.

I did notice a lot of Air Soft pellets around. They were doing some kind of exercises in there and I did see tactical boot prints on the dusty floors. So, I wouldn't doubt the FBI was using it for assault tactics. Thanks for watching.

The area you were exploring was the old USMAPS campus at Fort Monmouth. That central area with the pull up and dip bars was a courtyard for the students to hang out at with the gazebo as the designated smoking area. Those doors would have led you into the mess hall which was immediately to your right. Where the painted “Go Army” was the front of the USMAPS campus. We called that area the “Go Army Pad” where we had morning formation before heading to class.

Another really interesting video. I am a big train buff and also heavily into model railroading so seeing a video at trackside I found very enjoyable and interesting to watch. I am not sure where this particular section of tracks is located and tried locating the area on Google, but what I turned up is pretty general. I don't live very far from the EARL Naval Base that's located off Rt. 36 in Leonardo, but would assume these tracks you walked might be closer and near to the EARL Naval Base over by Route 34 in the Colts Neck area. I know there are train tracks connecting the two base locations. Well done. Phil

Interesting video. I came across your video by accident when I was doing a series of searches over the last few days trying to find old photos of the NCO Club at Fort Monmouth. We used to play there in a band quite often (fresh out of high school) in the early 1970s and I have tons of memories playing there. We also got to know a Mr. Evans (who apparently booked the bands) and he liked our band quite a lot as he used to refer us for playing many weddings there at the NCO. I can't really unfortunately find and photos before it went into disrepair and was abandoned. It would be great if I could with so many memories there and also playing at the EM (Enlisted Men's Club)...I'll keep looking. Thanks for doing the video and your dog is very cool too... local to the area:: not sure how i feel about Netflix coming in ( might make the traffic and population even more inflated ) - but i really wish they dedicated this whole 'campus' into a Veterans assisted living, care, and medical. It would have made sense and it would be appropriate for being an old military facility. Our retired, wounded, and ptsd stricken vets need more help and this could have been something valuable for them

Exactly right, Kevin. Many homesites and farms didn't care to make pits, they dumped them wherever they could. And, in my experiences, have never exceeded more than 10" to come up with bottles dating back to the 1840s. Understanding your state and topography is most essential.
