    You said you’re not a big fan of attribute rolls. In old-school D&D games and their clones I’m not either but they have their place. Recognizing (thru play or, indeed ability checks), the difference between the beefy fighter, the intelligent fighter, the charismatic fighter, matters. It’s also why, despite all of us knowing any character may die at any time, I still encourage players to scratch down a few words or a couple of sentences of the character’s background, as such may be useful and fun in play….the “country boy” fighter is going to be very different than the “raised by his father in the city who was a sergeant-at-arms”. The Four Musketeers are a great example. Also….no need for extraneous classes when a fighter has a background of being a hunter and/or forester, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah. I think ability checks can indeed come into their own sometimes in old-school D&D due to this/these. 🙂

    Old vid, but just wished to grant you kudos for how well-presented this vid is! Born in 1974, been playing since fall of 1986. B/X is one of my faves, so of course OSE is a big deal for me. Having said that, I’d personally default to B/X only because I know exactly where everything is. Heheh I also slightly prefer the OD&D clone WhiteBox: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game for years now. Also, as a rules-lite guy also love using RISUS and, despite being a thick Yank, I’ve recently discovered how much fun my Brit brothers had with FF! So I discovered the FF intro rpg….AFF (original and new are great)….but…. Finding a small, short, simple, fun game that ‘clones’ the original FF game….Spellzard!… so I’ve fallen in total love with it as well! Cheers, man! Again…great vid! Super full! Great job! Thanks for it.

    So glad I decided to watch your video. I'm not a big fan of D&D in general, not being a fan of classes and levels, and preferring skill based, like Cyberpunk, Traveller, or RuneQuest. I've watched several videos on OSE specifically due to its reputation as THE OSR system because I've consistently heard 1st ed (AD&D and BECMI) as a rules light etc but you are the only person to make the case in a way that feels genuine. What I mean is that the lack of a core resolution mechanic always seemed super clunky to me, but you made me see the narrative beauty there, and now I see the simplicity I couldn't before. Fantastic.

    Awesome content! I saw a solution where in the second question they just used filter such that (a,_,_,d) where d > a which I believe makes it a bit more consice and probably a tiny bit faster but I'm a newbie in Rust so would love to hear your take

    Nice insight that requiring the old races (for lack of a better term) to use their race for their class is a good way to have a more real feeling human dominated world. Generalizing you could say that the old races are set in their ways, so they have very tightly defined professions, with tightly defined skills or spells that do not change. Humans and any other young races can be any profession they can master and learn almost any skill or spell.

    When it comes to versatility, OSE Advanced is king, yes, it is good looking. But the possibility to a) combine race/class and b) multiclass sets it apart from other BX and BECMI clones. It is well designed, feels good in the hand (the digest hardcover formfactor...) and has important tables in the front of each book. Very nice. As far as I am concerned, OSE and OSE AF are great... I still prefer the RC and Oe though. But it conquered the bronze medal from Iron Falcon, so it is now my favorite Retro Clone...

    • @brandonkelbe
      @brandonkelbe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@llblumire I realize this now, I was listening to videos on the rules break down. Thinking this is great but I don’t want to give up on b/x! lol - I have ended up buying the OSE box set. I have the original D&D books, but they are like antiques at this point and OSE makes it so much easier to find all the info I need. It’s funny that was the only thing I did not like about D&D. I have lots of books and the info is all over the damn place. ‘wait let me find cleric stuff..’ It’s hard enough for me by myself let alone run a game like that. I got a whole bag of books for tiny details…

    Question: If you do not use your attribute modifiers all the time to do things in-game then what kinds of things do they apply to? I am a bit confused knowing how attribute modifiers in the game work. It seems they must be very situational. For instance, you do not get your DEX bonus every time you go to attack with a ranged weapon? That seems odd to me.

    • @llblumire
      @llblumire 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do you get your dex bonus all the time with a ranged weapon, but you add it only to the attack, not the damage

    I'd love to see a break down like this for the advanced classes. I know people like to defend the thief, but I wish they weren't so terrible at dealing with treasure traps. At level 1, they only have a 10% chance to find the trap, and a second 10% roll has to be made to remove it. Assuming poison needle traps (a classic), they have a 40% chance to make the saving throw. That gives them a 54% chance of being killed the first time they encounter a trapped treasure chest. A halfling could just trigger the trap, and count on his awesome saving throw to keep him alive 65% of the time. In other words, the halfling survives 65% of the time, versus 46% for the thief. 10,000 XP later, the thief is level 5, the halfling is level 4. Thief now has a 30% chance to spot the trap, and survives the poison on a 12 or better (45%). That combines to give the thief a 61.5% chance to survive, still lower than the halfling at level 1. The level 4 halfling is trucking along and surviving with a saving throw roll of 6 or better, a 75% chance. I know that's not all there is to either class, but it just annoys me that the treasure hunter class is terrible at hunting for treasure. You're mathematically better off letting a halfling or dwarf blunder through every trap they find like Mr. Magoo.

    • @ilyaalexakhin8745
      @ilyaalexakhin8745 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was mentioned in the video that old school modules have modifiers to the percentile skills rolls. So an easy lock or trap may add 30% or so, high level marks may subtract from a thief's pickpocket chance and so on. I think that's why hear noise is a d6 roll since its more of a passive skill and there is no direct opposition to the action as with percentile skills. It also assumes more work from the ref to balance out the modifiers and from the thief player to gauge what tasks are worth the risk. Maybe if the ref telegraphs to the thief player that the trap looks very difficult, the player may opt for the spring-and-duck strategy instead of tinkering with it. My preferred method for all skills is what Lucy does for stealth which is to just expand the regular 2in6 range of d6 rolls to 4in6 for thieves. 4in6 to surprise opponents instead of 2in6 (and sneak by/pickpocket surprised opponents with evasion rules or backstab), 4in6 to pick stuck doors with lockpicks instead 2in6 of forcing, 4in6 to find a trap if its not sprung then 4in6 to remove and so on. I don't really see a need for the extra overhead of diversifying the difficulty of traps and skill tasks with modifiers to offset the low starting thief chances and super high later chances. A steady 4in6 (67%) on a d6 seems about right for a treasure hunter.

    OSR rules you should look at? If you like it all in one simple book, get Basic Fantasy that is 100% all free (yes, 100%), or printed as super low cost if you want a paper book. If you want more details and more like the old rules, flaws included, get Old School Essentials. Personally, I like Basic Fantasy. I don't like complexity, and BF is also totally free PDF digitally (not lying about that), and only cost the price of the paper to get a printed copy for just $5. However, then I found an even MORE rules light game called Pocket Fantasy. The entire rules fit on 4 pages, player stats are just 2 numbers (hit points and fighting skill) and a list of gear. All Dice rolls are just a single D6. It is great.
