The Wandering Newbie
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 มี.ค. 2019
Based mainly in Victoria, Australia, this channel has come about because I'm a newbie to this 4WD and free camping thing....I'm also doing it solo or with little people in tow so I like a bit of research as I don't really want to get myself stuck or into a situation where being solo makes life difficult.
From my research I found it actually quite difficult to get visuals of the tracks and campsites that I wanted to use. From that I decided to record every track and campsite I went to so that any other 4WD folk who like a bit of knowledge of where they are going can see...ta dah!
I will always mention the date in my video so you can gauge for yourself whether conditions may have changed. Videos will be labelled simply so they are easy to search and if its a long track I'll put up the full track but I'll also speed up parts of the video. I will also put useful information in the description. Some video are very boring...nature of the beast.
I hope you enjoy and find them useful.

This cg has a horse yard. Lots of space, drop loo, fire pits and picnic tables. There is a little walk down to the fern gully. Small track in looks like it could get churned up at times so you would want a robust 2WD especially in the wet. Filmed November 2024.

This cg is fairly large with picnic tables and fire pits. There is currently no drop loo and the campground is closed to campers but open to day trippers. I have put this video out as the closure is temporary. Accessible by 2WD. Filmed November 2024
Flats Track - Thomson SF - Walhalla - Victoria

This track is a nice beginner to medium track. It does have a nice rock base so should be ok in the wet. There are large trees around so if you have to winch then you can. There is a split in the track if coming down it which gives you a very hard option or an fine option. Right is hard. If you are coming up, the entries from O'tooles are both to the hard part, Little O'tooles is the fine entry...

I have never driven this track before as the steep climb always put me off even looking. I found out that sometimes Google Maps takes you along this track to get to O'tooles campground so I decided to give it a go. That is when I saw that there were two options to get to the top, a steep section and a much calmer but longer section. I aimed for the steep section to find a gate! It's closed. You...

This cg is not near to the lake. You can access the lake but it is a walk from the campground. There is a very steep dirt road decent into the area and so if you have a big van then you will want to make sure you have a powerful car to get out! Portland Dune Buggy Club do have a large section of land. You need to contact them and get a permit to camp and access the dunes. There are drop loos an...

This cg has several different spelling of it's name. It has the most amazingly clear lake with a little jetty. There are a couple of drop loos. Most spots have firepits and tables. The beach is not close but can be accessed on foot via a 600m walk that does have some inclines. You need to book online at ParksVic and the cost is $16.20 per site. Filmed November 2024

This cg is no where near as nice as the southern foreshore. The tracks in the cg are rough and do not get looked after. There is a boat ramp but nothing else. There is a cracker of a spot but on our visit it was full of rubbish. We picked up some but there was far too much. Filmed October 2024 during dry weather.

Headed a way for a long weekend of fishing and exploring right on the border of SA and VIC. There is a boat launch there and we spent our first day fishing this bit of the river.......and caught nothing. The second day we headed down to Nelson and launched at Simsons Landing for ...

Was hoping to see actual footage of Billy goats since its been graded not just the pinnacles
It’s coming. I’ll do a comparison to 6 months ago and also the entire track. I’ll admit I rushed this video trying to get it out.
Pretty sure you were the one having a sook about someone (me) not knowing etiquette around holding up fingers showing how many cars are in a convoy on a two lane bitumen road 😂
😂 if it’s 2 lanes and bitumen I really don’t care, if it’s a dirt road then I do my best to pass on the info about what’s coming behind me. But hey maybe next time you pass me and I stick up 2 fingers you’ll be thinking there’s 2 cars coming behind me.
@thewanderingnewbie1 not sure what you're on about. It was bitumen rd and your having a sook about people not knowing etiquette. I managed to drive down the Princess highway and didn't need someone waving fingers either.
Thank you team for the Xmas tour extravaganza, see you in 2025 ⛰ 🎅🛻🎣
Lots coming in 2025. I’ve got a back log of videos to edit now!
He's right, die hard is a Christmas movie 😂😂😂
We watch Star Trek 😂
Welcome to my "hood". So many hidden gems
My trouble is everywhere has so many hidden gems that I run out of time!
@@thewanderingnewbie1 so true 👍🏻
hopefully you can film old flats in steve's car oneday. we once walked up old flats while camping at o'tooles, had a laugh at it being called flats tk, definitely a tough looking track.
I think I’ll walk it next time I’m at O’tooles too. At the moment Steve’s new car is in several pieces seeing as he chopped it in half with an angle grinder. Maybe 2026 it will hit the tracks!
Nice ... This was just shared by my friend Paul.. hope he will read my comment
Tell Paul I'm glad he shared it.
Great vid Lucy , love your hat . 😀 Those salmon would make an excellent live bait for the mulloway .
Thanks for the tip. I’m not the best fisher haha.
"Old Flats" is not for the faint hearted. Certainly not a good idea for ANY IFS vehicle in my opinion. Twin locked solid axles and ideally a comp winch for going up that. Also, the rock step at the top is a challenge.
Oh yes. It looks very messy! It actually been quite interesting to hear where different people think ‘old flats’ is. Had at least 3 different options that were wrong. One reason for the video! Hopefully I made it pretty clear where the ‘old’ bit is.
My mate rolled his car “old flats” It’s an awesome track but isn’t for the inexperienced. It’s very steep rutted off camber and has large rock steps. A crew of people and I’d recommend lockers and min tyre size of 33. Ideally live axle’s vehicles.
Yeah Steve is building a car. We’ll go back when it’s done. It will have all the bells and whistles.
Smart call there. Something we do on our channel is to constantly say/show that there’s nothing wrong with backing out of a track. We’d love to do them though…with someone else’s car. Only been passed Wahalla. Never explored the area. It will be a place we’ll definitely have to get to.
Yeah I don’t mind showing me chickening out. It’s amazing how much I’ve not been on given I live 2 hours away. So much to do!
I know that area well, I'm planning to re-do a documentary in the area surrounding Lloyd's hut. perhaps we could collab on the video?
Thanks for the offer but I am one busy human! Only just manage to squeeze in the trips I do now. I’m sure you’ll make a great video though. Tons of history. I’m actually thinking of redoing a trip I did all round Aberfeldy looking at the history.
@@thewanderingnewbie1 All good, this one will be a remake to mark 10 years since I lost my brother. Looking for a few people to jump on board for all or even part of the filming. th-cam.com/video/39t6XRylklU/w-d-xo.html
Good call Lucy especially with those big ruts and littler tires. Ruts scare the heck.outta me lol!
I’ll go back one day. Even at the very start I was diffing out.
Her tyres are too small too.
Most definitely
I think taking a camper trailer into the hc and not knowing the tracks you’re driving is asking for trouble.
Sure is, that’s why I filmed it. Hope it helps someone decide not to do it. I occasionally pull a trailer away camping but I’m not a fan of even single track roads. I see big caravans go into merringtons, the stress would kill me.
great to see you out and about
Summer is coming so I’ll be out more. 😆
Another great video. Loved the F bomb! 😂 I saw another ytube video where they recommended taking your seat belt off for every river crossing, even the easy ones. Just to reinforce the habit. What's your opinion on that? I can never seem to remember to pop my belt off, so maybe I need to do it with every crossing. I certainly wouldn't like to get caught out with my belt on.
Yeah I should take it off. If I’m going through deeper stuff, definitely. I probably should try to build that habit by doing in the small creeks too.
Thanks for posting this video. I might have to give this one a crack very soon
No dramas. Not been there for a bit so let me know how you go. Always interested to know if it’s changed much….gives me an excuse to go back.
Thanks for the map at the end.
Glad it was helpful!
The state government want to convert large parts of our state forests into national parks which will limit or ban activities such as 4wding etc etc. More permanently locked gates.
No idea why it keeps disappearing. Yep not the best idea the government have had.
I'm glad to find this video. I wanted to know what the rocks are like on this track. Thank you
Glad it helped. I really enjoyed this drive but then again I love rocks hahaha.
Totally agree that the forward facing camera doesn't really capture the conditions at all. I went over some dash cam footage (forward facing) of a track that had me bouncing around all over the place and it doesn't look bad at all!
After biting the bullet and putting myself out there with the incab I wouldn’t go back. I think it gives so much information, the movement, the look on my face, the sound. You do have to put up with me blabbing on though haha.
@thewanderingnewbie1 worth it!
On a very hot day, the walk back from the beach is absolutely gonna kill me off! LOL Nice scenery but!
Yeah it wasn’t even that hot and we bailed at the top of the hill!
@thewanderingnewbie1 Can't blame you!
👍 ! !!💜
Thanks!
This is a lovely spot on the Tyers river, on the way to Walhalla and Coopers creek and I have caught some nice trout at this location. Thank you for these vids.
Great info. Always good to know where the fish are biting! I think I’d spend a lot of time retrieving my lure out of bushes if I fished here!
Where do you find the time ? You must travel 1000 of Kay’s per year
Yep I reckon. Try and get away at least once a month. It helps that I can do multiple campgrounds in a day. It’s a hobby really, collecting campgrounds. I struggle to go past one if I’ve not recorded it!
@ ❤️ your work
Absolutely gorgeous work my friend!
Glad you liked it!
haha love it :)
Makes for something a bit different
be nice once the grass grows back
Lovely big space so will look great with some grass
Feel like some chicken afterwards? haha.
Sure did. Can’t say the word nandos and not think of chicken
love the look of the trees.. so cool
I’m amazed the hut survived given the tree damage!
This side of the mountain definitely feels different to the other side.
Yes. Don’t think the trees are as tall.
👍! !! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
Glad you love it!
Thank you!
No worries! I hope you get to go there sometime
My favourite fishing spot ❤❤Nelson
The river sure is beautiful but gosh I struggled fishing. Only caught fish down by simsons landing and they were all juvenile salmon.
Lots of broken glass last time I was there.
Didn’t see any but the northern campground was covered in cans. My son and I picked up over 40.
In your opinion could a Subaru Forrester or RAV4 AWD do the river crossing? 😬 Cheers
Depends on time of year. How high your air intake is. My friend in a ranger crossed it with no snorkel ok. In winter probably no chance, in summer, maybe but you might want to walk it first to check depth.
Thank you so much!😊
Yep, can be very windy, about the same amount of wind as Meredith Park campground on Lake Colac. Great to see so much, and yes, it is a long camping stretch. I think there are four lots of drop dunnies in total over the entire camping area
Are you a regular? Is it regularly windy?
@@thewanderingnewbie1 I think the first thing you may wish to look slightly closer at, is your opening still shot with the headings. It appears to me to be showing a wind farm in the distance. 😇 Yes it is a windy place and we have camped there a few times, usually one nighters but once for a few days. While I wouldn't say the wind was relentless, it was reasonably constant. That said, there are areas (small pockets really) where you can almost get a no wind campsite. From Melbourne and shortly before Ballarat, the highway peaks around 560m to maybe 600m. The area does drop slightly after Ballarat, but in general, the surrounding areas are reasonably high above sea level (for Australia) and the plethora of wind farms west and south west of Ballarat are there for a reason.
Haha I definitely saw all the wind farms, can't miss them, just wondered if it ever eased off down at ground level. I camped at Smythesdale recently and the arvo wind was constant.
@@thewanderingnewbie1 Well the wind sometimes lessens considerably getting near dusk, but not always. With regard to Smythesdale being windy I've been there 10-12 times, twice this year, March and June in fact. I would have thought the surrounding tree canopy, which is sort of heavy, would have lessened any major winds. We are in a truck camper, so wind really doesn't worry us unless it becomes cyclonic............. The worst thing about Smythesdale is camping down the back in the centre if it rains overnight, one needs to drop air to get out; been there done that. Other than that, Smythesdale is nearly perfect with only a short 10 minute walk to cafés, interesting restaurants and excellent pub food; all in the main drag.
I do not miss city driving, such a pain and certainly makes your destination ETA so much longer, glad it was worth the journey even though the fish were shy!
I rarely go over west just because I hate driving across the city after work.
@thewanderingnewbie1 Even when l lived in Thomastown l hated driving any further west on that Greensie hwy!!
Wow unreal! Lost my virginity at this camp-site 😂😅 in 1972 !! Surfed here it's very wild, also can be good fishing 🎣, big bream ,salmon etc , even shot loads of 🐰 bunnies, and fed aload of penniless surfers 😂😅❤❤😊
That sounds like a great trip down memory lane haha.
We've stayed there a couple of times, trust me when I say that if it really rains, then the roads are impassable to 2WD until they get dryish. The sloping angle of some parts of the roads means a 2WD slides the non-driving axle slowly into the gutter. Only takes about an hour after heavy rain, and you are right to go 🙂
Awesome info. Thanks for sharing.
Looks a little less fire damaged.
Yes a bit more green in a blanket of brown.
Love seeing these massive trees still standing.
Only just! Hopefully they all grow back, you can see them trying. I find it weirdly beautiful.
Thx for the look. Btw, fyi you can go into the editor and crop out a section of video (once and have the option of reverting to original anytime) just in case you wanted to clip off that ending.
Oh god. What have I left at the end?! Haha I’m away camping so I’ll have to fix it when I’m back.
Thank god it’s just black. I’ll do that thanks for letting me know. Teach me not to rush!
Love the comments from the peanut gallery. 🙂
There’s always comments when those two are around 🙄😂
THE V.R GOGGLES IN THE BACK SEAT TAKE THE CAKE😂😂😂
Apparently VR and camping don’t mix. He tried though.
good video mate
Apparently there’s an extra bit I missed right at the furthest point apparently you can cross the river again. Damn I’ll have to go back haha.
Tragic seeing it so blackened. Have walked through many times. Falling trees are going to be a problem for quite some time. 😢
Yes I thought that. Must have had some heat going though there, not one tree escaped.
Spent a few nights at Ditchfields before. When it is quiet, it is brilliant. Similarly, Mugwamp is a nice spot as well. Just have to share it with the mosquitos.
I can imagine once the trees grow back it will feel very closed in. Mugwamp is coming up and looks fairly similar.
@@thewanderingnewbie1 We just stayed here last weekend. Had the whole place to ourselves. Our ep will be live in a few weeks but it certainly was different. Loved seeing Mugwamp Hut still standing.
The hut must have been protected to survive. I bet it’s quite eerie camping where a bush fire has recently gone through.
It was surreal but peaceful. The eerie thing was that there were no other people around on a weekend.
Got internet access there?
Nope.
Did you take a jaunt next door to Mount Buangor SP to see if it's still closed?
No I didn’t. The kids were already bored and then with the constant road closures they were getting a bit feral so we missed a few spots. I’ll go back haha.
