Triumph TR6 at Tatton Park classic car show 2024
I’ve been attending classic car shows like the one at Tatton Park for over 30 years now and I’ve always enjoyed meeting fellow enthusiasts and seeing their cars. Here’s a short video of my day at the 2024 show in Cheshire with some of the great cars that were on show.

How to build an electric Raleigh Chopper
มุมมอง 2.3K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my third e-Chopper build. This time I've recorded the key stages of the build process so you can see the work that goes into creating these bikes. I take a 21st century Mk3 bike and restomod it to look like the 1970s versions, I then add a mid-drive electric motor making the bike so much easier to ride and enjoy.

I built this bike 2 years ago using a MK3 Chopper and restomoding it by adding the key features from a MK2. It's powered by a 36V 250W mid-drive Bafang motor. It will shortly be for sale on eBay UK. Link to advert: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115979283171

This my electric Raleigh chopper conversion. Unlike others that I've seen, this uses a sensible 250W Bafang mid-drive motor allowing me to retain the original rear wheel with Sturmy Archer 3 speed gears and the iconic gear shifter.

    Sun roof in your TR6?

    • @TheHughzt
      @TheHughzt 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, a 1970s after-market sunroof with removable glass panel. I liked the look of the TR6 hardtop so much that after I fitted it I sold my soft top. The sunroof gives a good compromise between top-down and coupé driving. I lined the hardtop with sound deadening material so it reduces noise as well as increasing rigidity of the body shell. I measured many times before cutting the hole in the roof!

      Thanks for your comment. There were so many cars I could have shown but I wanted to keep the video to a reasonable length with just enough content to give viewers a flavour of my day at a show. The Aston Martin Lagonda is a rare car and I really like the sharp corners of the body. I also liked the Ford Escort with the flip paint finish. I hope it encourages people to attend car shows near where they live too.

    was your motor a bafang 68 mm 250 watt 36 v and where did you buy your square battery from and did the wires fit each other or did they need modifying ?

    • @TheHughzt
      @TheHughzt 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it was the 68-73mm version, there are plenty available on eBay. The battery is a bit more tricky to find as the original listing has disappeared. This a similar battery www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196193188959?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=I5DgqjcCTF2&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=hyvhBVaNSpO&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY but please check it carefully to be sure it will suit your application. The connectors are different but they usually supply a spare XT60 connector with the motor kits. I'm fine with soldering so swapping connectors isn't a problem.

    Lovely bike, I have the mark 4 in ultra violet because I was an original council estate boomer who always wanted one with a passion, when I was 10 but a father who didn't have the wherewithal to buy me one in 1969. The mechanical propulsion is no problem for me being a club racing cyclist all my life. You do know that the throttle is illegal in use on public roads ? If one is fitted, it should only be a walk assist to 3.7 mph, not above that speed as yours obviously is. Not knocking you though, I have a throttle on the wife's ado 20 air and have been in the engineering section, changed it to hybrid drive and maxed out the speed limiter. It will now get up to about 22 mph unaided on the flat ( where permitted obviously lol ) from a CE 250 watt motor. Apart from the squared off cow horns, your bike would pass for a mark 2 by anybody apart from a Chopper Aficionado. My Mark 4 hasn't got the speed of my Cannondale system six or my Cannondale Super Six evo but what it does have is fond memories of growing up in the 60's and 70's.

    • @TheHughzt
      @TheHughzt 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for your comment. Like you, my parents couldn't afford a Chopper when I was young so I only got ride them in recent years. I guess this is why I'm comfortable with modifying the bikes, I'm not trying to recreate a replica of an original bike that I owned in my childhood. Congratulations on being the first person to notice/comment about the throttle 😀 Whilst you're technically correct, as this is a pre-2015 (2004) bike it could be considered exempt from the current e-bike legislation, but this is a grey area and I guess you could argue the case either way. Raleigh got around the rules on seat/sissy bar height restrictions on the MK4 by selling the higher MK2 style sissy bars separately, allowing them to be fitted by the customer. Would a MK4 modified in this way be illegal? The throttle can be disabled in seconds by unplugging the connector, but main thing is that if you ride your bike responsibly no one will ever pick you up on it.

    • @stevezodiac491
      @stevezodiac491 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes the wife's ado 20 air can easilly be made legal on the road again on the app by turning off hybrid drive mode because the pedal assist only, is always set at 15.5 mph, it is the throttle that takes it to 22 mph. When I was about 40 about 25 years ago, I electrified a racing bike with time trial bars on it. The batteries then were nickel cadmium. The motor was a high speed heinzman unit. The bike could cruise at 30 mph but I had to change over to a second battery half way to work after about 8 miles at that speed. The batteries age longevity wasn't very long then either. You are right about the police though, they are not interested in old farts riding sensibly, whether on an illegal e bike or not. They have larger fish to fry.

  • @fender1000100

    If any bike makes sense being electrified its a raleigh Chopper. I had one as a kid rode it nearly everyday from 73 to 80. And I remember it was a heavy bike. Around 40lbs i think. But yes great work here.

      Thanks for your comment. I get most of my parts from eBay, so if you search for “Bafang mid drive” you’ll find several suppliers. There are plenty of different options for power output and displays. I find the 36V 250W perfect for my purposes and I’d avoid fitting anything much more powerful unless you like pulling wheelies all the time 😄

  • @basylpeterjones
    @basylpeterjones 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I preferred the nice mint-looking Mk3 before you destroyed it. Separate from that, I assume it's inevitable that rare Mk3s and common versions in great condition will eventually have collectible value, while modified ones, like this, will only be worth the value of the parts fitted - like the Mk2 seat.

    • @TheHughzt
      @TheHughzt 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, each to their own, I hope you enjoy your Mk3 if you own one. My opinion is that Raleigh destroyed the looks of the bike with the Mk3 by deleting key features such as the gear shifter and the long seat. Thankfully there is a broad range of opinions within the Chopper community and quite few of the members have asked me to build an e-Chopper like this one for them, some offering considerably more than the price of the parts. Ride safe and enjoy your bike!

    WOW! Excellent! The most inspiring video I've seen on youtube. I just purchased an old MK3! Just one question? Are the gears and the motor power both working independently ? I mean the motor assists the front cog only?

    • @TheHughzt
      @TheHughzt 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, thanks for your comment! Yes, the motor drives the front cog and you can independently select 5 pedal assist levels in each of the 3 gears. This is why mid-drive motors a better than hub ones as the flexibility allows you to make the most of the motor’s power. Also I found I was pedalling too fast at higher speeds so I swapped the 20 tooth rear cog for a 16 tooth one, raising the gearing but I suggest you build the bike first and see how it rides before you do this mod. Good luck with your project.

      Yes, the Bafang motor kits include colour-coded cables which plug together and make installation quite easy, there are also lots of videos available to help you. The tricky bit with a chopper is finding somewhere to mount the battery. If you look at the video of my red e-Chopper you’ll see I mounted it under the seat. I’m currently building another and recording the whole process, I aim to release the video in the next month.

    An excellent build on a classic bike! You would hardly think it was an ebike as the battery is not really noticeable under the seat. Very impressed with the speed it's going. Have you altered the throttle settings to the controller using a lap top? With the recent release of new choppers by Raleigh this could start a trend! Very nice conversion I recently converted my 30 year old Marin mouse train bike with the same Bafang motor and it certainly brings a smile to your face!😂
