100 years of camera design, these are some of my favourites.
This small video essay is about camera design and its evolution over 100 years, from the Kodak "pocket" cameras to the iPhone. I probably skipped quite a few, what do you think?

Just food shots, 100mm macro FD lens on a BMPCC 6K camera, tripod, 3 lights and turntable (1RPM)

Very simple set up for food shots. Shot with the BMPCC 6K in RAW at the highest quality, too much quality if you ask me for an HD final product, edited in Da Vinci Resolve 18. Three lights, two of them with light boxes, could be replaced by diffusion , the third one is meant as a backlight or rim light. Old Fresnel Incandescent gets LED retrofit with monster DIY contraption, and it works like a charm

This old Fresnel 750W lamp was destined to become a prop, a design object in some office or, worse case scenario, scraped for metal. I decided to build an array of LED lightbulbs using G9 sockets and 8W bulbs. Amazon promised 100W of output (compared to tungsten). I'm planning to do a food video using this behemoth as key light, stay tuned. Links, I'm not affiliated with any of these vendors: G...

    Is it possible to convert Lowell's Tota and Pro series lights like this?

      Yes, I have converted old Totas with Led, it is even easier as the replacement bulbs are readily available. I did a video about a Pro conversion.

    Very interesting, but correct me if I'm wrong, the output compared to the FTK 500 Watts will decrease aprox 10 times which makes it very very low output, in other words you would be making out of a useful light as halogen omni light a useless omni light with a CRI 85 vs 100 from halogen.

    • @TheObsoletian
      @TheObsoletian 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but remember, when those lights were designed, they were meant for cameras way less sensitive than those we use today (like my BMPCC 6K). I normally shoot interiors between 400 and 1250 ISO and fast lenses, normally between f1.8 and f4. The output is just what I need for backlight and fill lights, if I had them with their original 500W output, I would need dimmers for them, plus a dedicated line for each light. Now I can connect 4 or more lights to a 10 amp breaker without blowing them off. They become more user friendly for small setups and way more controllable, they never get hot, so strike times are fast. I just used four of them for a commercial and matched them to existing 6000K lights on location. They basically saved my ass because I was shooting at a location with limited electric connections, I would have had to get a generator if dealing with tungsten. I'm serious, I just came back from said shoot when I saw your message. CRI has not been a problem so far either. The main thing is I USE them all the time, being so cheap, I have bought several sets of old Lowel lights and reconditioned them to LED and I don't have to worry about dropping them or dealing with finicky software nor electronic circuits like modern LEDs. I'm hoping in the future, more powerful LED lightbulbs are released that are also dimmable.

    Great replacement, but I'm concerned about efficiency. I have experience with a somewhat similar upgrade in some old 2000-s LCD projectors, and the thing is they all have the lamp which produces a narrow beam of light. It seems like the original incandescent lamp of this projector has the same property. So I think it would be much more efficient to use small LEDs like 10 watts Cree XM-L T6 placed in the focal plane of the convex lens. Such approach yields a narrow beam of light somewhat similar to original lamp. There are some videos on TH-cam where people implement such solution and results are good.

    Thank for sharing this! We have a pair of these lights at work, but I was not into working with them due to the heat and single color temperature. This is in my wheelhouse for easy disassembly and replacing actual fixture to use the LED lamps. Very helpful!

  • @janwich3937
    @janwich3937 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Really interesting, as I own 4 of those lights. As the 'bulb' has a very different shape, the reflector will no longer give that same beam it had with the halogen-bulb. In your demo at the end, you show only macro-like shots where one can get away with irregular beams. They might even be 'artistic'. Can you add a few photo's with the Omni aimed at a (white) wall. With both Omni and wall in those photo's, so one can judge the effect it has. Otherwise adding diffusion will be the only solution in set-ups where they were usually used. Thank's in advance.

    • @TheObsoletian
      @TheObsoletian 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It all comes down to usability to me. I had those lights for a few years, left forgotten in a corner of my studio. Yes, the projected light beam is different from the tungsten version and also they are less powerful than the tungsten (2 f stops difference on average). They are not the same as the original, you'd have to adapt to them by using modifiers, diffusion, etc.. The bottom line for me though, is I use them now, a lot, they are my go to fixtures for many applications. They are cold, I can put them close to expensive objects and food without fear of the light melting them. I can connect 3 or 4 lamps to the same 10amp circuit. They are well made, sturdy, unlike some modern LEDs that die unexpectedly for unknown reasons. I'd say try it on one of your lamps, the conversion is very cheap and reversible if you don't like it. If you find them useful, well, awesome. I don't make any money from this, just an experiment that worked for me and wanted to share with my colleagues.

    As well as using much less energy and avoiding the potentional of throwing away an otherwise working projector we eliminate the 'nightmare' of the film frying if it sticks in the gate. That said, theoretically, I think, films are meant to be good for projecting some 300 times so might consider a digital conversion at least as a back-up? Nothing lasts forever!

    • @TheObsoletian
      @TheObsoletian 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True, then you get into the conundrum of digital file conservation, a very complex can of worms in itself. I worked in tv for many years and I can tell you decades of videotape are lost forever and digital archives are also at risk of disappearing, they have to be copied ever so often and not everyone (the people with $$) sees value in them.

    • @jozefbubez6116
      @jozefbubez6116 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed! I think that some years ago one TV program dedicated to this subject concluded that the longest lasting storage might be via B&W film. Yes, video tape sheds oxide, DVD printing ink can corrode the aluminum film etc, etc.@@TheObsoletian

  • @buddhistsympathizer1136
    @buddhistsympathizer1136 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice job. The only major issue I can see with this is that the bulbs that projectors normally use emit a very wide range of frequencies (broadband). LED's don't do that. LED's are 'narrowband' and have a very distorted colour output which may be predominantly Blue (Cool) or Red (warm). Even 'Neutral' or 'Daywhite' LEDs will have a distorted colour output. This means that certain colours in your projected image will be very strong or very weak depending on the choice of LED that you used. With that said, though, if you are happy with the way the image looks then that's fine too.

    • @TheObsoletian
      @TheObsoletian ปีที่แล้ว

      The distortion you are referring to is barely noticeable, the CRI of these LED bulbs is close to 90. In any case, most super 8 films are old (some are 50yo +) and have lost some of their original lustre, especially on the reds. This is not meant to work as a telecine. Thanks for your comment.

    • @TheObsoletian

      The conversion for Totas is the simplest of them all. You can find replacement bulbs for those at Home Depot or Amazon, not as bright as the 500W from a Tota though (100WLED equivalent). I have a couple Totas with daylight LED rs7 bulbs and also use them often.
