The Launch of the Art Canada Institute
Founder and Executive Director Sara Angel talks to CBC News about the launch of the Art Canada Institute on November 28, 2013. Her vision for the ACI was simple: make Canadian art history accessible to twenty-first century audiences by creating a multi-vocal, bilingual, comprehensive web resource about the country’s visual culture-one that would enable audiences around the world to learn about Canadian art regardless of their access to a bricks-and-mortar museum. In a few short years, the ACI has become an indispensable resource on the art and artists who have defined the nation’s visual heritage.

Gershon Iskowitz: Life & Work by Ihor Holubizky
มุมมอง 1944 ปีที่แล้ว
“For Gershon Iskowitz, his art and life were inseparable and we must try to understand his circumstances-the trauma of the Holocaust and the uncertainty of the immediate post-War period. His early figurative images are his world observed and remembered. With the later abstract works, he made his own vision of the world, even as he made himself a ‘new man’ in it.” - IHOR HOLUBIZKY
Bertram Brooker: Life & Work by James King
มุมมอง 1884 ปีที่แล้ว
“A self-taught polymath and one of Canada’s first abstract artists, Bertram Brooker was a Governor General’s Award-winning novelist, a poet, screenwriter, playwright, essayist, copywriter, graphic designer, and advertising executive. His relentless exploration of new ways of seeing situates him among this country’s most accomplished early modernist painters.” - JAMES KING

Homer Watson: Life & Work by Brian Foss
มุมมอง 2834 ปีที่แล้ว
“Homer Watson’s landscapes were biographical manifestos and philosophical statements, an opportunity to explore nature’s inner life, power, and meaning and to probe the delicate relationship of respect that he believed human beings should establish with the natural world. His dedication to safeguarding the environment was exceptional and far-sighted.” - BRIAN FOSS Music: Hicham Chahidi www.musi...

Gershon Iskowitz - I Paint What I Know (1972)
มุมมอง 1825 ปีที่แล้ว
Polish-born Gershon Iskowitz (1920 or 1921-1988) survived the Holocaust by creating drawings as a means of psychological resilience. At age 28 he arrived in Toronto and in the decades to come made a name for himself as a leading abstract painter. In these clips from Peter Mellen's 1972 film "Gershon Iskowitz - I Paint What I Know", the artist reveals his journey and his artworks in his own words.
Is This Art Canadian? Brian Foss on Homer Watson
มุมมอง 3745 ปีที่แล้ว
Despite having almost no artistic training, in his mid-twenties Homer Watson (1855-1936) achieved national renown after his painting The Pioneer Mill, 1880, was purchased as a gift for Queen Victoria. His fame increased further when Oscar Wilde likened him to the Barbizon artists in France and declared him to be “the Canadian Constable” (adding that he simply “must know that man”). The Kitchene...
Is This Art Canadian? Sarah Milroy on Emily Carr
มุมมอง 1K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Few artists impact the world equally with their paintings and paragraphs. Van Gogh was one, Emily Carr (1871-1945) another, and she was one of the first Canadian artists of national significance to emerge from the West Coast. During her life she felt her artistic career was a failure. Saddled with a sense of professional and personal isolation and rejection, she persevered and her vision of Can...

Rebels & Iconoclasts: John G. Hatch on Paterson Ewen
มุมมอง 3406 ปีที่แล้ว
Paterson Ewen (1925-2002) had the rare privilege of being involved with two seminal moments in Canadian art: the first with the Automatistes in Quebec, the second with the London, Ontario, art scene of the 1960s and early 1970s. The former directed Ewen away from landscape painting, the latter back to it. But Ewen’s treatment of landscape painting was far from traditional; it involved using lar...

Seeking inspiration beyond the conservative climate in Toronto, Munn travelled to New York and Europe in the 1920s, absorbing the lessons of the international modern art movements. My favorite moment of the current retrospective at the National Gallery was reading how they escaped the burning down of their imaginary Miss General Idea 1984 Pavilion. Following this tragedy they would unearth relics from the ruins appearing much older than something from 1984 ought to be...replete with poodle imagery...genius.

Thank you for this video! I visited the Robert Houle Red is Beautiful yesterday. I stepped in not know much about art and history, but tears and curiosity suffocated me as I walked out. Walked out with the feeling of “weight” on me. This video explanation helped me so much with understanding the “weight”. I appreciate you making the extra effort putting this information out here.

We need his magnificent works reproduced in order for more people to be introduced to the genius of Harold Town - Agree would appreciate more time spent actually talking of the man and his work. Hopefully someone else will create a deeper understanding of his work and why he was such a genius ( a bit too much name dropping here for me and probably for Harold ha ha )
