How to turn acorns into gold
Join me as we talk about the mighty oak, its place in California ecology, and how to take care of the oak woodlands to get maximum acorn returns.
Fawn Lily Ranch is a community supported retreat in the Sierra Nevada foothills focused on teaching about native/natural history, land restoration, forging connections, and making memories to take away from the mountain forever.
Most of my info about indigenous oak use comes from the book Tending the Wild by Kay Anderson, which was made into a documentary series you can see here: th-cam.com/video/TbxLv9EEzs8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Oxe8UQyrFx1lPIyM

Drop Acorns " Not Bombs " .... ! Thanks for putting Your Heart , into The Fawn Lilly project.. Knowing that paticular valley area for over 13 years .. I wasnt aware & the locals never told me , there was so many Oak specis in the south folk area...
Being in harmony with the earth suits you ❤
Thank you!!! Great information!!
Thanks for checking the video out! We will be publishing more about oak trees and other topics around nature, history, and the current state of balance.
You talk about oak trees and their purpose with nature. You never get to the point on how to turn acorns into gold, unless it is about growing trees. Which you should be then propagating trees and such that you can help reforest the land.
I agree with some of what you’re saying. The title is a little click bait and also a metaphor that knowledge of oak tree importance makes them more valuable. The area of Fawn Lily Ranch luckily has new oak tree growth, but the young ones get crowded out so I am letting squirrels and woodpeckers do the planting and my role is to make it easy for them to do their jobs. There is a forest here it is just out of balance from poorly educated human actions. So for my part the education makes more difference than actually putting acorns in the ground. There are several very impressive oak re-forestation projects in California that I have supported financially in the past.
im not 100% understanding what your manifesto has to do with "How to turn acorns into gold"?
Metaphorically the knowledge of what this tree and its nut can do turn it into something more valuable like gold. It’s also a little bit of click bait and this is in gold country and the destruction of the oak wood lands here began with the gold rush so it’s a subtle nod to that.
So no explanation on how to process acorns into food ?
Thanks for bringing that up, you can see I’m I have across in various steps of processing and we did film a lot about that so if it’s interesting to people I will publish that video soon. I am still learning the best methods but stay tune and we will share a realistic approach to making the most of acorns in a mast year! What a gift!
@FawnLilyRanch-z4n will do. Thanks for the update.
Your mission, that you explain at the end of the video, is super noble! I love it. Lead with that.
That’s really great advice, we filmed it last so posted it last but I agree that broadcasting the purpose of the video early will help frame the info being shared. Any other notes you have are very welcome!
😅 Great! 👍🏾 If you're going to pursue something in vain, land restoration is a great... objective
You have a great way of telling people that you're a nihilist without saying that you're a nihilist.
It often feels like land restoration is more about not doing all these things to make profit off the land like turning it into an AirBnB or growing a bunch of weed sometimes but I’m learning and will share as we go.
@@jswets5007let’s be constructive and engage each other if we disagree rather than putting people in labeled bins. If you know nihilists, then you know they don’t care about TH-cam comments anyways.
@@FawnLilyRanch-z4n I'm not putting labels on anyone. I'm reading the labels that they have self applied. Good luck. Farewell.
@@jswets5007what do you think about the oak trees tho?
The audio shift at the three minute mark was striking. I was just dozing off to the relaxing talking and you scared the crap out of me!
Thanks for your comment, I didn’t use a microphone for this but I will in the future. Hopefully that will keep things on a relaxed vibe so the info can soak in deeply.
@FawnLilyRanch-z4n no prob. Just giving a little input. I see you're still a small channel and I'd love to see you grow.
Fun Fact! : Oak trees are able to detect when a larva/worm has infiltrated a growing acorn it will drop with the cap still intact... So in a way give it's fellow man/creatures an indication of which acorns are ready and which should not be used
It’s pretty impressive. The ones I got from the ground were about 50% with holes and the rest were still ok.
That is neither fun nor a fact.
The real gold of California.
