12mR: An Enduring Legacy
Filmed during the 2019 12mR World Championship in Newport R.I., highlights include racing footage and competitor interviews paired with the experienced insights of the 12MYC’s Station Steward Gary Jobson who also wrote and narrated this documentary.
From July 8 - 13, 2019, twenty-two 12 metre yachts and more than 300 world-class sailors representing six countries converged on Newport to compete at the 2019 12mR World Championship. “The narrative of this film demonstrates why the people who race 12mRs are so passionate about the yachts,” said Jobson. "The feeling of sailing a twelve upwind connects sailors to the wind and the water in a way that makes you want to come back.”
“The twelves will continue to thrive long into the future because they are fun and yet challenging boats to sail- the 12 Metre Class is the epitome of what yacht racing is all about.”

"The International 12 Metre Class is one of the most enduring classes of yachts racing today. Originally created in 1907 the 12 Metre World Championship in 2019 attracted 23 boats to Newport, Rhode Island for a week of racing. The narrative of this film demonstrates why the people who race 12 Metres are so passionate about the yachts. Winning is the goal, and important but the larger reward is ...

I sailed on a detuned 12 back in 2009 down in the Caribbean. A tourist thing, but the best sailing that I had ever done. We sailed against two other 12’s with tourists too. Great fun, a lot of work. I appreciate the foiling cats and the technology but the old style relates more to my generation.
I am a proud Australian, but I wish that the class didn't leave 12 meter, and I also think it should also return to Rhode Island Sound and preserve the history and significance. Yes we won it, but it took a lot of innovation to do so.
The great shame of the America's Cup today, is that the skill of sail handling is no longer required.
So much better than the current AC boats and they have crew work
I wish they hadn’t changed the rules for the America’s Cup.Denis Connor & John Bertrand in 1983 was just so entertaining to watch.
Thanx 4 showing the ‘Weatherly’! My favorite 12! Have loved this boat since she was launched! 👍❤️
Beautiful, they cannot be compared with these current monstrosities with wings
I was there for the 1983 races and traded my Cape Dory belt for a Victory one
How Much ? 💵💵💵💵💵
I could watch 12 meters sail to windward all day long ..
The 12's are still my favorite America's Cup boat. It's funny, these new boats scream over 40 knots but somehow they are not as interesting to watch, at least to me. The AC75's just don't have the elegance of the 12-meters.
That was fantastic 👏 ⛵⛵⛵🍻🇦🇺
There is a scaled down miniature remote control class called the EC-12 as well.
I used to own 12M MAGIC. She is now wasting away in a Dutch harbor. Anyone who wants to save er, please contact me, or Google MAGIC.. Thank you
I used to own 12M Magic. I took her to the AC Jubilee in Cowes. Now she is wasting away in a harbour in the Netherlands. Anyone who wants to save her, let me know.
great. When is the 12M again in Europe?
top !
Thank you Gary Jobson for so eloquently bringing us the story of the 12's.
Wow. Just wow. The most graceful yachts to ever sail on the water in my opinion. Absolutely loved this video. The footage is just amazing to see.
WELL???? Did they hit? At 9:16 I watched KA-12 come within inches of the transom of the white boat, only to have the footage cut away at EXACTLY the wrong time! Ahhhhhh! Seriously though, This was incredible footage of even more incredible boats. I sailed on DEFENDER (US-33) when I was in high school, back when it was based in the OTHER Newport (Newport Beach, CA). My dad installed the engine into it, and the owner was kind enough to invite us out a few times. It's a handful of sails that, 30 years later, I'll never forget. To this day, my favorite number is 33. Thanks for the awesome content, and it's good to hear Gary Jobson's voice again, too! - Jason
Ok, so at 9:22 it shows the two boats still sailing peacefully. They must've ducked. Ha ha.
So nice cant wait for Helsinki this year
Is this anti Foiling propaganda ? AC75 is the Future.
Totally agree.
Is this anti-foiling propaganda? Probably. AC75 is the future for now and perhaps for a decade, then it will be something else. But these old girls, like the 8's and 6's, will be admired and enjoyed for many years to come, be it racing or chartering. And folks occasionally build new ones. Time will tell about the AC75's. Any boat that needs a chase boat or two to follow it everywhere is suspect IMHO.
AC 75s have no crew work, reminds me of watching go cart's give me 15 crew working hard any day
Great to see these beautiful boats still active. They are really classy and unique. I fell in love with them at a young age but never had a chance to sail on any of them. But I had the great pleasure to sail and race with Gary Jobson, Robbie Doyle, Dennis Conner and Ted Hood and it's been a fantastic experience. Thank you for this great documentary.
Thank you for sharing some of your 12mR story! And we are thrilled you like the film. There are more videos, photos and boat information at www.12MYC.org
Please, please, please provide more content like this! I can never get enough of seeing these magnificant yachts sailing. They are the most gorgeous yachts ever in my opinion. I'd rather watch these racing than the current aircraft in this years AC.
I always did enjoy watching this class race.
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Would love to see Stars and Stripes 12m racing in this fleet. Miss the old days when racing was more about close quarters team match racing than just speed.
Thanks🥰
The aerial footage was spectacular, well done gentlemen.
Wow - Nice footage! What type drone did you use? were you in a a power boat? What happened at 0:07 ? was that the starter gun? thanks, Joseph V
