The (Original) Houghton Weavers - Battle of Hastings Monologue
The Houghton Weavers were my late father's favourite folk group from Lancashire and these videos were recorded by him onto VHS cassette from their show 'Sit Thi Deawn', somewhere between 1978 and 1980.
This is one of the few monologues that I have performed by Tony Berry and assisted by Norman Prince.
He got a great deal of pleasure from both listening to and watching them perform. I hope that you too have even a fraction of the pleasure he did. I also wish to bring an awareness to a new audience of their music.
I now want to extend my sincere gratitude to the Houghton Weavers, whom have given me their full written permission to upload and share these videos on You Tube.
Please feel free to comment on these videos, but also be aware that I review all comments before they are posted and I will automatically remove any comments that I consider to be offensive, rude or inane without notice or argument.

This was my late father's favourite Houghton Weavers song. It was recorded by him somewhere between 1978 and 1980 from the programme 'Sit Thi Deawn' (shown on BBC North West) on to VHS video cassette (Hence the lack of quality). I wish to say a sincere thank you to the Houghton Weavers, whom have given me their kind and full written permission to upload these videos to You Tube. My aim is bring...

Takes me back a bit, we got this in Wales, very grainy picture, but loved it.
I remember them doing this at Gracie fields and my dad crying with laughter.
Monologue written by Marriott Edgar (1880-1951) :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriott_Edgar
love this group they bring back memories from my childhood <3
RIP Tony Berry.
A very sad loss.
Thanks tony.song means a lot to me.since my father past away.this is how I remember him..your the best..tony
never thought he would end up presenting Bulls eye.
Moved from Lower Broughton to Kersal flats because our house was falling down in the 1960's slum clearance. Lower Kersal was a great place to grow up. The Houghton weavers will be glad to hear Kersal flats have since been blown up.
Watched them at Winsford and Northwich ......a first class act .They have a wonderful collection of songs they perform.
Just seen Houghton Weavers at Birdwell Academy Theatre (May 2017). A really good show and brought back lovely memories of my late dad who had this one tape he played in his car over and over. A little disappointed that the Blackpool Belle wasn't included in their set but I luv em none the less...ps thanks for the cd x
A family favourite, this band, besides bringing back memories of y Grandparents
i used to take my mother to see them on the isle of man, and now take my teenager son, music for all ages and as fantastic now as they were years ago.
i first saw the Houghton weavers when they did a mini tour for the troops in northern Ireland way back in 1980 in Crossmaglen and i have been a fan ever since this song still brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye whenever i hear it
I do hope there are more of these, just brilliant, used to love the jokes too
Thank you so much for this
how can 3 idiots not like the weavers get a life
I interviewed Tony from the Houghton weavers on my radio show on Salford city radio 94.4fm a couple of years ago. He was very nice. Then a couple of months later I saw them live for the first time and he mentioned me at his gig after I requested a song for him to sing. I think I chose the ballad " streets of London" lovely people.
my dad
I saw them three times and thought they were brilliant, but this song never fails to put a lump in my throat. It sums up my own thoughts perfectly. My Dad died 13 years ago whilst I was holding his hand but like the song says I still miss him so much. A wonderful man that he was.
just discovered these guys a couple of days ago when I was doing a search for "The Weavers" with Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays, Fred Hellerman, Pete Seeger, so now I have to find out all I can about "The Houghton Weavers" thanks for sharing these great videos from the past, just love this stuff :))
we had these many years ago at the band club in buglawton great times such happy memories
Saw them at the Memorial Hall in Northwich years ago. Great guys & a great show!
Nice sentiments Alafa Snifter.
Saw these guys at Wigan Pier must be 30yrs ago . They were brilliant. My friend got us good seats near the front who has recently passed away after his long battle of cancer aged 49. I dedicate this song to Keith my best friend from Aspull whom i will never forget . He actually used to speak to Tony the lead singer as thier kids went the same school . Thanks guys for a lifetime of memorable music
Brilliant
I moved from lancashire to wales. Me thinks it be rite grand, if the played at the Llangollen Eistedfodd. If Pavorotti can. Why good ol lancashire lads eh?
I still have an original vynl. My fav song. Lizzy lindsey.
Meet the weavers in the 80s..love them.started me off singing.im now 48.and still doing it.thanks.tony.norman
I took my family to see the Houghton Weavers at Southport in the late 80s. I told Norman that my 11 year old son was given the choice of seeing THE superman film or the Houghton Weavers. Norman was gobsmacked that my son chose them. Lovely songs...lovely memories! Jimmy Hughes (Crosby)
It shows that they have an appeal across the whole spectrum of ages. They lost a lot when Norman left though.
Just like to add I still took my family to see THE Superman film that same week. L.O.L Strange thing is I gave Tony Berry an audio tape that same night of some songs (mostly ballads) that I had wrote. Tony never got back so my confidence as a songwriter has been put on hold for some 35 years now. "Oh well. "
This takes me back to my childhood. We used to watch them every year at Gracie Fields theatre, Rochdale. I was a member of their fan club, had their autographs and we used to play their tapes all the time in the car. Happy memories yet makes me sad for days gone by and people we've lost. Hazel xxx
I think this one was my grandad's song for his funeral it is the best song never
I saw them playing at Thornton Hall on the wirral years ago and they were brilliant.
your right there brilliant seen them lots of times shame they broke up lead singer was so good
this was originally written by an Irish songwwriter called Phil Coulter as a tribute to Ted Furey, the late father of some friends of his (the Furey Brothers) who died back in 1979...
I didn't know that. Thanks for the information.
Went to see these perform last night in Derby. I'm ashamed to admit that I hadn't heard of them prior to my Grandfather inviting me to go to their concert with him, but at 27 I think I have a slight excuse! Excellent evening though, really enjoyed the music.
Brilliant. In political and economic terms the song confirms the old Lancashire saying, "the more it changes, the more it stays the same,"
BEAUTIFUL
Thanks for you comments. I really must put some more HW videos up, but when I think of doing it, I simply don't find the time. Watch this space.
We used to listen to this , and other Houghton Weavers tracks, on the way to Anglesey in my dad's car when we went on family holidays when I was little. Completely forgot about them until recently. Thanks for the dosage of nostalgia, and this song in particular.
Great thanks for uploading. Frank
Thanks for your comment. From the tape that this is taken from, Norman is in the line-up; he just doesn't appear in this particular song.
Great memories. Just one negative, if you can call it that,.......this video isn't the original weavers.....Norman Prince is missing.
Hi Chris, I should have a little more time in the next couple of weeks to put a few more up.
Hoping you will have tome to post some more soon - we are missing your uploads!
Glad you like it. xx
Yes Danielle I have some footage of St Winifred's Choir, I will try to put some up when I get a little more time. Sorry for the late response. x
thanks for uploading this,I was there that night in the audience.Do you you have 'whats christmas without a brass band', from the christmas TV special?
Hello uncel paul have u seen rattys road show? Have u seen drunkassainz? I'm on drunkassinz!
I used to be part of St Winifred's School Choir when they toured and performed regularly with the Houghton Weavers. Have you by chance any video footage of the choir performing with the group? I'd love to show my children if so.... Some fond fond memories. Many Thanks, x
Thanks for your comments. I do have more from the VHS tapes and I will be uploading songs as my time allows. I can't put up a whole programme though, as the HW have only granted permission to put up small clips (for BBC copyright reasons) and don't want to break the trust that they have put in me - sorry about that.
thanks for posting this looking everywhere for this if you have the full programme please could you upload it and if you see my channel i have the rare old times album in full that i posted last year
Love it!! Tony still does this monologue occasionally & another one Battle of Trafalgar (Gunner Joe). Always guarantees a laugh & they're still keeping folk smiling!
