How to Solve ACT Math Problems Example 7 | Math Energy TV
Task:
Solve the given word problem.
Abandoned mines frequently fill with water. Before an abandoned mine can be reopened, the water must be pumped out. The size of pump required depends on the depth of the mine. If pumping out a mine that is D feet deep requires a pump that pumps a minimum of (D^2)/(25) + 4D - 250 gallons per minute, pumping out a mine that is 150 feet deep would require a pump that pumps a minimum of how many gallons per minute?

Task: Solve the given word problem. In the figure below, ray EF was constructed starting from rays ED and EG. By using a compass, D and G were marked equidistant from E on rays ED and EG. The compass was then used to locate a point F, distinct from E, so that F is equidistant from D and G. For all constructions defined by the above steps, the measures of angle DEF and angle GEF..? It is impossible. Absolute value is always positive, no matter what number you take. And a positive number + 1 is also positive so it can never be 0.

    • @MathEnergyTV
      @MathEnergyTV 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      One note though: The absolute value of 0 is 0, and 0 is neither positive nor negative. So the part about absolute value always being positive is not true. Your reasoning at the end, though, was right! A positive number plus another positive number will always be positive. Keep up the hard work!

    N=0

    • @MathEnergyTV
      @MathEnergyTV 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ooh not quite. We can check whether n = 0 is a valid answer by plugging it into the left hand side and seeing if the quantity equals 0. | 0 - 1 | + 1 = | -1 | + 1 = 1 + 1 = 2, not 0 Remember that the absolute value of a negative number is the positive of that number. Keep up the hard work!

    So the equation T( temp at time t ) = T(0) (temp at starting point 6am) + r(rate of hourly temp change ) x H ( lapsed time in hours from 6am) Plug in value T (2pm) = -3 + 2 x 8 = -3 + 16 = 13 😌
