Hey Culp! I finally got my Pro Kit assembled - and it works! What were the jumper settings you set to get the CP/M card to function please? You kinda glossed over that. If you heard someone shouting "Nooooooo!" coming from the direction of the UK, that was me. :)

Liked and subscribed. Strangely, my backplane RESET switch is right-angled and the footprint doesn't fit the PCB! I'm not sure what Spencer intended there. Luckily I had a momentary switch like yours in my inventory.

Silly question.. Will the device turn on at all if I haven’t downloaded the software yet? I press the power button and the screen turns white, but nothing else will pop up.

ZX81 come with 1KByte of ram, not 4KByte.

May I recommend using TeraTerm instead of putty. Not only does it do a better job at ANSI emulation and key translation, but it also has integrated file transfer protocols like Xmodem.

I love my RC2014. Classic II specifically, though I have 2/3 boards from the CP/M upgrade kit installed. Bent a socket pin on the CF card reader, destroyed solder pads removing it, and I don't even care because mistakes are learning opportunities. The ROM board from the upgrade needed a component lead(from a capacitor or resistor, didn't keep track of those trimmings separately) soldered to an IC I broke a pin on, the RAM board has a bodge wire because of another damaged solder pad and the TX/RX pins trimmed because I ended up with a short somewhere sending data through pins that shouldn't be connected... It's been an adventure for a newbie with electronics.

These ridiculous backplane connectors were the worst decision I've ever seen. DIN 41612 connectors are a global backplane standard and cost the same as these toy SIL things. Look at the hoops the designer made you jump through at 21:12, pulling pins out to make something fit? Sheesh... And the PCB with the pointless cut out at the end, some kind of Apple case idea? Nobody puts these things in a case. It's a shame that such a nice range of boards was kneecapped from the start, by some guy thinking he'd save 10 cents an a 100 dollar system :/ Nice channel though, subbed 👌

Looks like you got the full mid 1970s experience! Millions of solder joints and lots of fun trying to get everything to be connected properly and play nice together. Obviously you would've gotten that terminal card working … but I very much recommend having a look at Putty's settings at some point and figuring out how to configure profiles to make this kind of tinkering a little easier. If for no other reason than to make your backspace work properly.

can't figure out what's wrong with my rc2014 cp/m setup, suppllied cf card didn't work, I bought a bunch of spares on local market and managed to run cp/m from one of those but looks like it works read only, can't write anything to card. sad (. ordered sd card card, hope it will work better.

Excellent video David. Well done. Wayyyy too much soldering for me. Started in 78 - (all hobby) 8080 and Z80 S100 BUS systems using CP/M 2. Absolutely the best days of my life. Yep, I am a 60 yr old guy with a keen nostalgia for Z80 systems. Might have to look for a pre built Z80 CP/M solution. Keep up the great work! All the best, Edward

Fun build. I listened while soldering up a SMD practice board. Completely doable with a fine tip iron, fine solder, and a microscope (I got an AD407 to help with soldering) The hot air station was an effort saver, too.

Great video! I really liked it! Please, could you help me? I bought this exact kit from the DeskPi Store. And I bought it just to use as a retro game console. For this I need the Front USB Ports to work to use the joysticks on them. I use the RGB-Pi Cable and the Recalbox RGB Dual HAT on a Sony BVM Professional Monitor. The RGB Pi OS 4 used to run the RGB-Pi cable is built on the Retropie platform. And Recalbox I don't know what platform it uses besides linux. Do you know how I make the Front USB ports and Fan control work? On RGB-Pi OS 4 I used DeskPi's Wiki method, got some progress but it didn't work. In Recalbox nothing worked. I would really like it to work to play with my children, after all, I bought it just to use the two systems mentioned above. I use RGB-Pi OS 4 and Recalbox 8.0.2 (recalboxrgbdual version). Thank you very much in advance! I already left the Like and my Subscription on the Channel.

Thanks for these videos! The voice recording is much better. I’ve got a RC2014 sbc on order. It’s not quite the same as this kit as it’s all in one z180 kit with an included RC2014 bus. My plan is to run some CPM 2.2. I wrote an entire thesis in Wordstar, “back in the day”.

CP/M was created by a man by the name of Gary Kildall . Gary was also an avid private pilot (important to his story). CP/M had risen to prominence as an easy to use and powerful operating system that ran on a variety of platform , including early 8080 and 8086 based systems. IBM was developing the IBM PC and needed an operating system for it, they went to a man by the name of Bill Gates and asked if he could do it. But he didn't have a product in place at the time and he also didn't feel like Microsoft could handle it as they were still extremely small. But Bill Gates suggest that they go see Gary and lease his CP/M for use as the operating system for their new IBM PC. IBM decided to do that and setup and appointment to meet with Gary at Digital Research Inc to discuss just this. On the day of the visit Gary was not in the office as expected, his wife was largely rude to the IBM people (IIRC) and Gary was out flying his plane. He was not fussed about showing up to the office, as perhaps the importance of this meeting escaped him. Anyway he took his time getting back to the office apparently and by then the big wigs from IBM had left. Needless to say they were decidedly not happy about the turn of events with Gary and Digital Research. Now either Bill Gates reached back out to IBM or IBM reached back out to him I don't remember, but Bill was not going to let this opportunity go a second time. That's how PC/DOS and MS-DOS was born. It wasn't long after this Gary saw the IBM PC taking over the small market once used by CP/M and become a dominant force and edging out CP/M and forcing CP/M out of business after awhile. He remained in the public eye for awhile after this, and released products like Concurrent DOS for the IBM PC. But it's my understanding he never fully recovered from this loss personally (though I don't have any specific article to site right now). He eventually retired from co-hosting the Computer Chronicles on PBS and I don't think much was heard from him publicly thereafter. He was honored on his death in July 1994 by the Computer Chronicles. He was an early pioneer but remains an excellent example of being in the right place at the right time.

hello I wanted to ask you .... I try to do this procedure with Windows, but when I install retropie on a 500gb SSD, the remaining 460gb space does not create the partition for me to put the roms and if I modify it but manually it ruins the boot system .

Cylon.bas should be renamed Larson.bas since it is actually a Larson scanner in honour of Glen A. Larson. Secondly, the down count FOR loop should be FOR F=6 TO 1 STEP -1 because the way you have it means bits 0 and 7 are lit for twice the delay!

You can list the directory while in mbasic with the "files" command.

Wow great video I like this out of all the other demos. Question I have this case but I don’t have an SSD yet. Can I use a USB to put my roms on it then use the USB in front of case to play games? And if I do that I’ll only have one player. But does the USB with Roms have to be plugged in all the time for me to play? Thanks 😊
