Westcott Eyelighter 3 Review
มุมมอง 2.4K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a re-review, I'm still new to making these types of videos (and video in general) and I wasn't pleased with the quality of the scene and lighting in the first video. Hope you enjoy it in a different format now with more details. After previously using the original Eyelighter...I loved the look it created. However the setup and tear down made it a no go for me. I heard that FJWestcott ha...

The Magbox, why it failed for me, my personal review.
มุมมอง 50K5 ปีที่แล้ว
As a member of the initial kickstarter campaign I had high hopes for the Magmod Magbox. Unfortunately the product I was hoping for and the product I received were two different things. As an additional note. I find the whole premise of a company that has sold what I’m assuming is millions of dollars in product over the years can’t do their own R&D. But instead has to rely upon people to purchas...

      Yeah, I guess that's possible. I'm not sure why the person I spoke with was upset that the product was bad. It happens you know some people won't like the product you make. No need to get butt hurt and say I was rude for saying it, and then asking for a refund. Anywho I haven't been a fan of magmod since then.

    When demonstrating the light output, the value does not mean much without telling us the distance from the light to the subject. As distance increases by 1, light decreases by 4. Based on this, even a low powered light can be bright up close.

    • @colbewells1487
      @colbewells1487 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You're totally correct on how lighting works. However as stated in the video the values are on their website if you need that precise of information. Additionally there are many people who are doing significantly more technical reviews if you want to find that information with light meter readings. I really am just showcasing the reflector fall off and light output when directly compared to one another, not from an overall standpoint. So therefore for my example the distance and actual power output really doesn't matter here.

  • @aarontharris
    @aarontharris 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    You should really consider getting a light meter

      @colbewells1487 Interesting. Now I'm curious, what kind of studio work do you do?

    • @colbewells1487
      @colbewells1487 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@aarontharris I rarely do studio work. I'd say in any given year I only do 5% or less of my jobs in studio. So with that most of my on location work it is actually significantly faster to adjust light output to the tethered images I see pop up on the laptop. I used a light meter in the past when I thought "everyone/pros used it" and it's like I'm popping the flashes either way. I might as well just utilize a histogram and a preview of the finished product over what a flash meter says. To each their own and your more than welcome to use one on your work. But for me Zebra's with video and histogram within Lightroom give me all the information I need.

    • @aarontharris
      @aarontharris 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @colbewells1487 Fair enough, we all have different workflows. I'm retired now, but I mostly did studio work -- product and food for SF Bay Area tech companies and restaurants. I found that with some practice I could quickly grab a reading from the main light and use that to set the distance/power of the secondary or snoots. I could usually get pretty close before popping flashes which saved tons of time. Good luck with your channel.

    • @colbewells1487
      @colbewells1487 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@aarontharris Congrats on your retirement! That's the other aspect as you stated. My lights are typically within a stop before I even take my first test shot. Also if you've been shooting since before digital (idk how old you are if you're retired) then yes a light meter was significantly more important then! and if it held over in your workflow that makes a ton of sense too!

    For those asking about other products in the video that I use, they are listed below. I believe I may do an entire video showing my whole kit and how I came up with it. ----------------------------------- The backdrop is the Westcott X-drop system. I have their original version which is 5x7 I believe. But as was also stated they do have different variations now so you may find a different one suits your needs (potential needs) better. The Roller Case is: Photoflex Transpac Dual Kit Case (IT'S HEAVY when I have it full of stuff. Have an assistant help or you must be strong to pull it in and out of vehicles/into buildings) The stands are manfroto "Alu" series of stands that all clip together for easier transport. I do have 2 sizes I believe the 12' "master" and the 9' "ranker". The C stand is a Kupo Master C stand with Turtle base (5.7' variant in black) with a 40" grip arm. Some nano stand that I put the eye lighter on (can be any mini stand but is the nano stand is versatile for any needs)

    I thought the light output on the Amaran+softbox @19:22 looked "cleaner" with a nicer colour than the Westcott+softbox @19:28, which had a green cast. I'm sure that could be corrected by adjusting the colour temp on the Westcott, but if they were set to the same kelvin setting, then Amaran was the winner for me. Definitely agree on that reflector for the 60x S...what were they thinking. Looks like you could set fire to something with that hotspot. 😆

    • @colbewells1487
      @colbewells1487 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      yep they were at the same kelvin temp. Not sure why it was like that. And yeah I ended up going with the Amaran myself. The reflector isn't amazing but honestly I only ever use the reflector when I'm doing bounce light or fighting the sun in a quick outdoor interview (where the hotspot helps actually) so it's really not a big deal to me.

    Ho Colbe, nice detailed review, so I liked and subscribed. For sure the Wescott looks neat with it's metal body. But the light quality and app control are important too. Also the convenience of having lights in the same eco system as well as costs, transportability etc etc. In isolation much to like with the Wescott. I'm an amateur newbie to videography and film making but have extensive stills experience, multiple light stands, grip kit etc and strobe heads in different sizes/brands - Bowens, Godox etc (ok for stills, not for vid, but my Bowens reflectors, soft boxes and other grip kit can be used in videography). But, I plan to continue shooting stills (my first love) and see videography as an expensive hobby. Not that I'd object to the occasional commercial assignment (I have done that occasionally with stills) but don't see it as my day job or main income stream. I'm lucky that I can afford to indulge in nice kit but, GAS tendencies aside, I need to keep it realistic and recognise I'm not creating my own personal 'gaffer truck'. I just bought an Amaran 200X S - as my first key light vs other alternatives from Godox, SmallRig, Colbor etc after careful analysis. Main advantages IMO were Bowens compatibility, possibly best multi light control system with Sidus app and overall Apurture eco system. I would have liked more powerful Apurture 600 pro etc or Nan lights, but clearly capital cost is a factor if starting over and investing, eventually, into multiple lights - preferably in same system. Dual blue diode tech on second gen 'S' Amarans was def an important factor for me too (ie light quality). This is also available on the Amaran 60X S. So for me, although I do like what Westcott are doing, the Amaran 60X S units are both cheaper and a better fit as possible future purchases in what may become a selection of multiple lights. I feel that there is a synergy, eventually, having everything running from one Sidus control app. Plus Apurture will undoubtedly continue to be a main player (more than might be said for some suppliers/brands - but who knows which will cease trading longer term). I'm planning to grow my skills and resist buying more kit than I have the time, knowledge, skill and need to use. It's a journey and I now feel a need to get out more, shoot, practice, collaborate, reflect and learn.

      @colbewells1487 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad to hear that it helped you really see how nice the setup and packing features are of the V3! It's really a great reflector! As for the clamps there is a link in the description! :) but most hardware stores should have something comparable! As for the 300pro.... that would require a whole other video to dive into. But the short of it is: "it's the best all around flash on camera or off camera I have ever seen." I tried the Profoto B10 before and it just didn't seem as consistent for its price point. But they are comparable in output, size, etc. I love Westcott modifiers however I love the proprietary mount that the flashpoint/godox has it's sturdy and a bit more robust for larger modifiers than a mini Bowens, and much smaller obviously than a standard Bowens. I feel the power is enough to do anything that "I" require indoors or outdoors. Since using them I sold my 400 pro because it was never used anymore. And lastly the pack size is wonderful, it's so small! All in all again the 300pro is hands down the best flash on the market IMO.

  • @SummersSnaps
    @SummersSnaps 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great video. A couple things; - Remote control. Does the Westcott have anything? I know with my Amran 60D there is a phone app. Does Westcott have an app or a separate remote that you can buy to adjust power? - There is a tiny sock that came with my Amran 60D, it made a HUGE difference to the reflector quality output (even spread of light and hotspots gone!). However I asked Amran if they made more (or even different colours for temperature control) and they said they did not. So if you lose that sock you're stuck back at a horrible reflector output. - The battery plate that comes with the Amran doesn't have any info to tell you battery life, whereas the separate one from Westcott does look like it gives you some info to the remaining charge left. I think many would upgrade the battery plate to include one that does feedback some battery health indicators so I see the Amran one being a bit surplus (maybe a good backup but not what you really want to use long term and would likely seek out a better one anyway).

As a portrait on location and studio shoot who owns more than 12 light modifiers I can tell you that I rather unpack everything and put it apart on the case. Organization is key in my business. Oh I was angry about the way they didn't stand behind their warranty and then took down my comments and reviews based upon my complaints with the product and them. That said my review of the product itself was not based upon anger just the way I feel it don't work for me personally. Hence the name "why it failed for ME". maybe not for you. If you like wasting 15 minutes setting up your modifiers that's all fine and dandy. I personally like just taking off a cover and opening it. I have not "built" a single one of my modifiers since the first time I bought them. I also do a ton of on location portraits and being able to just open the soft box and turn on the strobe saves myself and my clients a ton of time. But to each their own, if you charge by the hour like that I get it!

Material, light quality, weight, robustness etc. Comon man.

Depends on how much power you need, what you are shooting, how fast you need to shoot, what sorts of modifiers you need to use, how much of a budget you have to spend, etc. If you want just a generic answer of what I think the best light on the market is right now..? I'm not SUPER up on the newest lights that are out. BUT For the money the Flashpoint (USA warrantied good) 300pro is unbeatable! If money isn't an option though Profoto B10x plus. As for the rest of the setup again that's very dependent upon what you are shooting and how you are shooting it.

      @@colbewells1487 from what little I’ve researched it, agreed there are sooo many options hahaha I noticed a 430 EX RT going for €100 near me and Jinbei’s German distributor offering what look like awesome deals for their HD Pro line so I’m leaning towards grabbing one secondhand Canon and one Jinbei and seeing how they play together as well as which one I prefer shooting with solo. My first goal/challenge is to try and copy the Dylan Patrick cinematic headshot type of flash shot. Looking forward to learning and playing with this new step for me. Thanks for replying!

      As far as modifiers I’m not sure which ones I’m getting yet but for budgets, seeing as it’s my first foray into the field I’m wanting to keep it relatively low without sacrificing the challenge at hand. I’m most likely going to get the biggest modifier my budget can afford from the Jinbei distributor seeing as they’re the most affordable across the board in my region.

    You didnt show the fuss to connect right Wescot.second wescot ...sitting on your knees , softbox on the soil (arggg, not possible to fit a studio flash) Seen the newer Magmod Mega 24 Octa Pro its better, and I dont believe the output of the little wescot is same as the magmod, second the bigger will catch much wind and is a pain in the ass because of its size. The box is handy to include your flash, so to my opinion the Magmod overall is more handy.

    They are way too overpriced, the production cost for those stuff in China is probably like 1/10 of the price they're selling

    Your review sums up why I decided not to go with the MagBox. One my goals as wedding photographers is to provide the B&G a worry free day, and screwing around with a rather cumbersome product is not a way to achieve that goal. While I have many of MagMod's other products (which are great!), I decided to go with the SMDV Flip G Speedbox system. I like the size 28 so much for speed setup and weight, that I am ordering a size 36.

    Great review and completely fair. I like the grip, the grid and gels but their gear is so expensive. When I saw the MagBox I was interested but then I saw the price and thought “why would I pay so much to save like literally 20 seconds.” There are so many alternatives that are equal and a fraction of the price.

    I nearly invested in magmod from the ground up (mounts, grids, gels, sphere, magring, magshoes, etc) when I saw thier new Magbox Pro 42. There are some slick videos out there that make it seem like the best system out there. Because magnets! But thanks to your video I started to think about size, portability, convenience and cost. I think it was going to be 800-900 to equip for weddings. So instead I bought an S2 bracket for $18 and a Glow EZ 34 for $80, and a bunch of Godox round magnetic accessories like grids and gels for about $6-$10 each and I am all set. Thanks!

      @@colbewells1487 yeah the incompatibility with round heads is what tipped me over. That, and I just learned that the S2 bracket exists (I had the old one, which had trouble fitting a AD200 fresnel head.) So now I'm all good to go with round head everything

    Great post and loved your intro. Yeah I’ve always been disgruntled w the price of MagMod gear, like you I have a couple grid systems but I’m not getting the soft box. It’s too big, too expensive, and doesn’t have double diffusion. You forgot to mention the bounce dish that goes into the Rapid Box, it improves the light quality a lot.

    Great review thank you. I have the Magbox, I do love the design but you're completely right about the size and weight! I've hardly ever taken it on a photo shoot because of that. Looking at Westcott Rapid Box now...

    I watched the whole thing and I totally disagree with you. Its actually a great product IMO and I prefer being able to break it down and pack it up. I think the build is superb and the convenience in changing out gels quickly, adjusting with one hand, and having two lights to save on recycle time more than makes up for the extra 2 minutes youll spend setting up and tearing down. But cheers for fighting the man! I don't like censorship and value this kinda stuff when shopping. I just personally don't find your points compelling in the least bit. Cheers!
