Rebuilding and restoring all parts of a Land Rover Series 2, including axles, diffs, engine, gearbox, chassis, transfer box, swivel housing, prop shafts, steering and more! There will be many other side projects along the way!
In July 2020 I bought a 1960 Land Rover Series 2 restoration project and after rebuilding the chassis with some new parts from Britpart, I decided to record my journey on TH-cam.
With so many people now restoring the older Land Rover Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3, I hope that there is something in all of my videos for everybody, weather you just enjoy satisfying videos or you pick up some tips on jobs to do on your Land Rover.
I hope you enjoy these videos and will subscribe to my channel, and comment on my videos, telling me what you like or don't like.

Collapsible Camping Hammock Frame for Land Rover Discovery
มุมมอง 3813 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I explain why my channel is called Half Job George, and I made a hammock frame to take camping. I cut metal on the chop saw, drill holes on the pillar drill, make a blacksmiths drill at the lathe, and do a lot of welding with the tig welder.
Rebuilding a Land Rover Series 2 Front Axle Swivel Housing and Steering Joint (Part 2?) Restoration
มุมมอง 10K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I fit the front axle to my Land Rover Series 2, I also fit the chrome swivels and set up the pre load on the steering swivel pins. I take the viewer through the process showing out takes and failures along the way in the hope the viewer finds this useful. I use my micrometer to measure the shims and a spring gauge to measure the preload on the swivel houseing. Contents 00:00 Intro

Using the land rover series 2 diff as an example I show the viewer how to measure the pinion height so that the pinion gear will mesh with the crown wheel correctly using slip gauges and a ground steel bar. I then explain and demonstrate the whole process I use to set up the pinion shaft pre load on the Rover diff Pinion bearings. Contents: 00:00 Intro 00:12 How to measure pinion height 03:26 H...
How to Repair a rusty Series 2 Land Rover - Welding and Grinding with Half Job George
มุมมอง 1.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I repair part of the Land Rover Series 2 Chassis I am restoring. I find a few holes I had forgotten about under a leg I welded on when I was doing the bulk of the chassis repairs. First I cut the affected area away with the angle grinder and a slitting disc, before cutting a new piece out and welding it in. Then I give it 4 coats of my favorite Dacrylite Paint! Brah you look like steam wallys brother
Can you use aluminium wire to lock the bolts in??
I wouldn’t, but I’m not saying you can’t. I prefer then stainless steel wire
This was the worst way ever all that metal in the engine now😂😂😂
Not anymore, chemical dipped and well washed out. How would you have removed them?
@@HalfJobGeorgeoriginal poster is silent lol. Could you possibly grind a slot and turn them out?? Also why are freeze plugs or core plugs there to begin with? If they are this hard to remove, couldn’t they just be plug welded? And if they are needed for maintenance, couldn’t they have a hex head so it wouldn’t be such a PITA??
Hallo George. Sehr ausführliche tolle Videos. Ich kann viel lernen. Habe einen Land Rover Serie 2a von Baujahr 1964 hier in Thailand. Viele Grüße
Thanks for the video, i´m restoring a 40 years old Series III from Scoland rangers park service. Just finished rear axle and watching your video before starting front one.
It looks like your missing your thrust bushing from the top pin
Just smashing
Good video, thank you very much
Thank you very much George, your video has been very helpful to me, Greetings from Chile (I have been subscribed to your channel for a while)
When did you check pinion height and shim the pinion to the correct height and then check wear pattern between the ring & pinion?
Please see this video for more detail :) th-cam.com/video/VRi97fdcark/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nDqwwSORIufQkylM
HA George there should be 2 fiber washers and the pin is cheap to replace.
You can see the fibre washer at 7:00, the shaft is replaced later
Hi mate, what size socket do you use to remove the drain plug? Best!
Should you pack the bearing with grease? I thought it lubricated by the axel oil.
I don’t think the oil makes it that far up with ends of the axle, they are normally packed with grease.
Always pack with grease. We used to thrown them with force a few times into a grease can which did a good job of forcing the grease in, or just push it in by hand until clean grease comes out the other side.
Have the diffs changed on for exemple a 300tdi?
Yes they are a little different, specs are little different also
No, No, No....please take all the time you want in disassembly, explaining as you go. I just bought a 1962 Land Rover Safari IIA 109. I need all the help, tips and advice I can get to restore it. Thanks in advance.
The lips are where the cylinder liners have worn over time..
Yes that’s correct although these engines don’t have liners as far as I’m aware:)
Για από Κύπρο πολύ ωραία
some grease would be helpful - especialy for future extraction
Nicely done video 😊 just one question what is the exact name for that Kennedy TORQ tool? Can’t seem to find 1. Much appreciated Matt
Its a kennedy torque wrench, sold by Cromwell Tools :)
@@HalfJobGeorge thanks buddy have a good 1 😀
😂 1.70€ with nut from bearmach here in Spain. Other wise it would be practical to have it in metric. I had one nut missing on the rear shackle and it’s impossible to get a replacement of of the shelf, I been to a lot of shops including Land Rover them self and they don’t have it. Just online 😢
Wow that is cheap, must be old stock ones maybe?
Hi Nice job
Hi, Nice😊
'Promo SM'
Thanks for posting. Very informative. I look forward to the next one.
Nice review there mate! You still happy with it? I am considering this for my garage as well. Do the wheels have a break or are they free wheeling all the time?
Hello, still in use and I’m quite happy. Yes it has 2 brakes
Hi, I am 3d artist, i am working on a 3d model of the Land Rover Series 2a. May I ask you how approximately is the length, width and the height of the engine and also of the radiator? I don't need precise measurements of the engine and the radiator, but maybe the ones that you think come to mind. Thank you.
Would you like a 3d scan? Send me your email or something?
@@HalfJobGeorge oh thank so much.. i sent you a message on facebook :)

Ha thank you :)
whens your next full video George?
It’s currently being filmed, doing lots of little bits, could be a while though!

First of your videos I've watched. Great video, looking forward to the next👍
Well thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Woo!
Great to see more of the Land Rover, and this video is top notch.
Thanks, Im glad you think so!
Good to see you back!
Thank you! Its nice to be back!
Welcome back George
Thanks, its great to be back!
Perfect review
Haven't you put the steering arm on upside down, thought it's meant to be on the bottom of the swivel
Early Series 2's have steering arms on top of the swivel housings. Later Series 2's and 3's have them on the bottom.
I think you’re thinking of a later axle where they moved the steering arm to underneath
How do you know that the spring was the wrong way around?
It has an offset at one end and it wouldn’t have lined up
Hey nice technical video with allot of information. Can you please share your source for buying new pinion and crown/ring gears. I am trying to buy for 2006 range Rover HSE sport 4.4 ltr. Need help.
Don't buy it...unless your pockets are deep with cash.
Is the thread drill bit drawn down by the thread itself or do you push a little bit.
Apply a little pressure to start it off and then just the weight of your hand to balance the spring in the pillar drill
Nice job !
What's the tool called that measures the bearing tension? Thanks
I think you are referring to the tool measuring the play? Its called a Dial Test Indicator or DTI
Hey George, what are the fiber shoes that you mention at 8:52?
Hi George. Have you finished your Land Rover ? I e watched all your videos and found them very useful but you haven’t posted for a while.
Unfortunately not, I got busy doing something else as always!
Hey, just an update for you, I posted another video last night and I will be getting on with it all again this year! Thanks for questioning me months ago and giving me reason to continue!
Hi George, haven't heard or seen from you for a long time. Hope everything is fine with you!
Hi yes everything is fine, I just got busy with another project. I may do some updates on that over the summer and hopefully finish more of the series over the winter!
Just letting you know, I posted again last night and I’m back to land rovering now! Thanks for questioning my absence on youtube and giving me reason to continue!
I’ve watched all your videos and noticed that you haven’t posted anything for a while. Are you still doing your rebuild? Karl.
I got busy with another project but I’m hoping to start again soon!
Good information and videos as always on the channel! Would you rate britpart gearbox bearings? I'm building my box up and some bearings aren't easy to get in japanese makes
I try to avoid all Britpart things but I don’t have any experience on gearbox bearings unfortunately. How did you get on?
Hi George I notice I have a bronze bush missing same as you. Video Time 16:20, would you happen to know the part No ? Any difficulties re-installing ? also well done on the videos.
Thanks, mine came out attached to the half shaft. Is it 217354… double check!!
Obrigado George, muito bem explicado. Show
