I promised my students I would film myself in an eddy this weekend. I’ve been periodically teaching them river terminology, in hopes that they all become shredders one day.

I was so stoked to hit the Iceman when I first heard about it, so naturally when it came around this January, I was in a boot with a grade 3 ankle sprain and hadn’t kayaked in about a month. I decided to use my small rewind, coming in at 8’4”, a boat I had only paddled once in October. I also did not warm-up, get a single practice lap, or even check out the section at this level before my turn....

What a save on kahuna! Good stuff
This is so cool! is the water only that high cause of recent rain or is it normally like?
it is a schedlued dam release
Those are some lucky sixth graders with a rad teacher. Sick footage man!
Liked watching this. Some smooth lines mate.
am a kayak?
are you
Nice
This looks like a blast, I'd love to catch it sometime.
So cool
As a life long paddler and guide …..that’s super sketchy
I take it you were a flatwater guide then ;)
@@christiantscott no , 4/5 whitewater ….you could of easily got upside down it all that brush and mess , I get that it’s not some super technical piece of water but risking getting caught in a brush pile strainer or stuffed under a pipe or even those tunnels could of had all sorts of junk in them …. Just doesn’t seem safe just to say I ran the ditch in town yesterday….but it’s your party
You should've seen the last hurricane son.@@jaya2137
I kayak on my nearby Scottish loch and when it floods I have an absolute ball paddling through the forests and fields, across my neighbours' land and down the road! Surprised one Land Rover driver who was out having fun in the floods. I want to kayak downstream in flood to the next loch but I need a more experienced buddy for that.
Interesting. Sort of a downriver race, but with eddies to catch. The eddies are marked with the orange cones. I didn't see if there was a reason you ferried out river left, after the first eddy. Was there a marker you had to make or just looking for a good line through the ledge drop? The ledge didn't look sticky in the video, so it looked like your ferry was just for fun or something. I am curious about the set up and rules for the two races you name. Will have to search them out. I've meant to set up slalom races around here, but never got around to building enough gates. Putting cones on rocks seems like a nice easy but cool alternative.
This was the first time I ever did this race, and first time I ever actually attempted the course. I watched other racers make the ferry left into the slack water, as the consequences of blowing the s-turn out of eddy one and into eddy 2 are more severe than they seem, so I decided to try that as well. The hole is actually fairly sticky (it held a prior race-winner for several minutes on year), but I overshot and went way too far. I would have been much faster to just attempt the s-turn. You should check it out, super cool event!
@@christiantscott Your explanation made total sense as I watched the video again. Hard to make perfect decisions when going as fast as you can without having paddled the course before. I come from a town with very few whitewater kayakers, so I liked seeing the big turnout and the simple way to set up a rudimentary slalom course. Gives me some ideas. Of my two times paddling in the east, once was playing kayak football on a canal in Augusta, Ga when my son was living there. The other time was on the Elkhorn out of Frankfurt, KY, after a film festival. Otherwise I boated mostly in the southern Sierra Nevada.
Love this sort of kayaking. It is a different adventure and interesting in its own way. When going through branches, I try to duck my head, body and paddle flat against the deck so I can spear through the brush. If you get stuck, I think there is less danger of the stern submerging or twisting. Have fun!
Awesome less the garbage in the creek
ditch yakkin.
Is thst a sewer?
Haha nope! Around 100 years ago, it was a beautiful meandering creek. As our little town grew, all the streets and parking lots became paved, so this creek became our stormwater drainage ditch. All the water from the entire city flows into this creek at some point during a storm.
This is awesome!
Thanks!
My wife and I used to paddle a small river by us in Germany, the Lahn, and I remember how after a lot of rain there would be trash all over in the trees and along the bank.
Yup! We use litter collecting booms to catch all the trash after a big storm, then host volunteer cleanups to help clear them out
Great editing! Keep having fun out there 😊 Thanks for sharing.
So fun! More challenging than I'd ever attempt, so very fun to ride along with you! Adrenaline pumping!
Very nice videography, great shots! Great editing & music too! Looks like you've had some wonderful adventures in our beautiful mountainous east. Thanks for sharing. Keep at it ❤

cheers! Have a good spring break
Cool color combo on that "X" boat my dude. Dig the soundtack as well. Paddle on!
Wow nice editing
How do you like your x for freestyle stuff? Does it have too much volume?
it has too much volume to squirt on an eddyline, but I can have a lot of fun with it in holes. It's a long boat for technically being a full slice, and I really enjoy it. It actually punches holes fairly well, and I take it creeking a lot. You can still splat and stuff, and it boofs like a champ. Also really fast
Cool video! I really need to get back into kayaking. Paddling upstream got me in the best shape of my life! Good for the soul too. New sub here from Augusta, GA. 😎✌️
