PureData tutorials - rich synthesis (17) - DX7 Phase modulation 3
This tutorial series looks at going beyond the basics in Pure Data to create richer synthesised sounds.
In this seventeenth tutorial, we continue towards a DX7 synth, creating a flexible routing system that lets us send any oscillator to any other oscillator so that we can implement the specific DX7 modulation algorithms.

    Hmmm my 'pd many notes' is not cycling through the array of notes and seems frozen at 0.. with a desperate little blip sound lol. Any thoughts? Thank you.. addendum - not frozen at 0, in the 'pd many notes' it is cycling, but the value is simply 1 through 8 instead of, what I assume, is supposed to be 67,68,69 etc.. which I assume adds on to a note I enter manually in the main graph, but nothing I enter into the main graph changes the pd-many-notes to a higher note output.

    You are a beast, these tutorials are really helpful. I'm trying to get a little drum machine going and your examples are great starting points. As an alternative to the square wave oscillators I hope to try FM synthesis to get a mess of inharmonic partials for the cymbal. No idea if I'll like the results as much as I like this. Cheers!!

    Wonderful tutorial series, thank you. However I can't get past the introduction of the envelope: unpack: i: bad type and if I try to run, I then get "expected float, got list" and there is no sound output. Pd Help suggests that i is not a valid data type for unpack. Thanks in advance

    Hi there! I have a problem with the file, the PD just read it a few secs of it, and the duration in samples goes 1,607e+01 so it's weird

    • @reallyusefulplugins
      @reallyusefulplugins ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @karlouribe1187. Difficult to say what might be happening there. It depends which part of the tutorial you are talking about , but the idea of a grain player is to only play a short part of it, then use different approaches to play lots of chunks. To see the full duration, try right-clicking your number box, go to Properties, and change the "width" to something like 10 or 12 so that the duration number fits in the box

    • @reallyusefulplugins
      @reallyusefulplugins ปีที่แล้ว

      It helps us go from a continuous audio signal running at sample rate (from the phasor~) to a more occasional, control rate signal that is triggered by the metro every 125 ms (or whatever rate the metro is set to). The phasor is constantly moving but we just take a "snapshot" of whatever the value happens to be when the metro fires.

    Strange why you didn't explain the feedback , since operator feedback can only be done within a subpatcher with a block~ object set to 1 , and using tabsend~ tab receive ~ ( delread~delwrite~also works . So now we can turn a sine into saw into noise When I hear you tweaking the feedback at the end of the video , it's obvious you didn't use block~1 sample , so in your case the feedback is determinded by the overall blocksize

    Are you GLaDOS from Portal? Your lessons are elegant. Here's a just intonation 7th chord to try with many_notes: ;pitches 0 54.6883 57 60.8631 64.0195 66.6883 69 72.8631 76.0195 78.6883 81 84.8631 88.0195 90.6883 93

    I tried using the 5 osc's from the additive lesson with polyphony here, but the sound comes out scratchy. I got it. I had to divide the osc's by at least 4 to get the total under 1. Oh polyphony adds to the volume too.

  • @epiphoney

    I would choose the notes from a just intonation 7th chord with frequency ratios 1/1, 5/4, 3/2, 7/4, 2/1 like 440, 550, 660, 770, 880 or in midi 69 72.8631 76.0195 78.6883 81
