Aylesbury: County Offices and Friars Square ca 1967
Shortly after the 15 storey County Offices were completed, they held an open day, which allowed my father to take this cine film. It starts with views looking west over Southcourt and then north over the still under construction Friars Square and the Market Square before panning east and south toward Exchange Street and the Canal Basin. It then has views of the library and the County Offices taken from Friars Square, followed by a glimpse of Friars Square and the Market Square taken through the window of the Cadena cafe.

Hilly Fields is a park sandwiched between Lewisham and Brockley in London. Of particular interest are the prefabs in Adelaide Avenue and Montague Avenue. Prefabs were temporary houses build after WW2 to tackle the housing shortage. Many lasted a lot longer than their anticipated 10 year lifespan. Had a summer job in Chiesemans in 1967 then spent up in the Lucania snooker hall opposite above Burtons.

I think the sand pit, slide and definitely the concrete tunnels survived until the late seventies when I first visited. This must have been one of he best locations for prefabs ever!

I hope you enjoyed the playground as much as I did. I'm the fair-haired kid in the light shorts. Not much of that hair left now though. 😂

Glad you appreciate it. John Leyton was not a name I was familiar with until I looked for some music to go with this clip. It's a great tune.

I was born in August 1963 in Lewisham Hospital and Lived on Tyrwhitt Road when I was still a baby In 1963. Age of two 1965. I moved to Tressillian Road near Montague Avenue and at the age of three in the summer 1967 my second Cousin took me to Hilly Fields Park and I was a-bit scared on the swing and the slide's but I enjoy it though!. What a memories I miss Brockley so much...

Hi Errol. Thanks for sharing those lovely memories. I was born in Lewisham Hospital too! However, we moved away from London when I was still quite young and I wonder if I would remember Hilly Fields at all if my dad hadn't taken this piece of film. I'm glad he did, because so many people have enjoyed it.

When I was two and a half we moved to Algernon Road in 1957 and I've lived there since then. I remember the prefabs, and the concrete tunnels in the playground.

If you Google Earth the area, you can clearly see the "crop marks" where the prefabs were located along Montague Avenue.

It was SO lovely then. They should have left the prefab there, it would help with the housing problem. I loved them.!

Tower House was the Co-op. Chiesmans was the building you can see just to the left of it. If you are interested in nostalgia about this part of the world and you are on Facebook, I can highly recommend the following group facebook.com/groups/435277893269381/
