I was digging through a bunch of old live recording of On Ensemble tracks and came across this from our Works in Progress '09 concert. It's a free jazz inspired track I wrote called Bizarre Heroes based on a 13/8 groove that features Russel Baba on sax and Kaoru Watanbe on fue. This was the first the piece had been performed live so the execution is a bit sloppy but it's still a favorite of min...

this is real music... Heavenly... thanks for sharing 😇
nearly 20 years ago, this "Bizarre Heroes" did create fantastic music ! Thanks for sharing amazing Shoji, Baba and Kris 😊
Holy fucking shit, this slaps.
So this is where the boing sound comes from
Yep
Very beautiful! Especially going into my 21 years of Leo age :) 🦁🌞🌞🌞
badass
Looking forward to seeing this group in concert next month, what an amazing sound.
Never knew this instrument also exist in mongolia. We kirat has like this instrument
Well, Kiratis were the closest decendents of the Mongols so not much of a surprise.
these instruments are all over the world. most cultures made them at some point.
Thank you guys for being here in this world, much love from a south Moroccan
The rhythm you three share is awesome to watch.
👍
amazing!
Someone could tell me where find the short film?
O-M-G😍😍😍😍
This video has been up almost 3 years and I'm the first to comment? Hard to believe. I've watched this performance a number of times and appreciate it more each time. A long time ago I bought 3 On Ensemble albums on Bandcamp: Dust and Sand, Ume in the Middle, and Bizarre Heroes, and I like them all. Yamasong is on Ume in the Middle. On Ensemble is the band for fresh and innovative music, especially for people like me who have been watching taiko performances for a long time and are looking for something less traditional.
It's hard to believe that I'm typing the second comment! This reader haplessly stumbled across this bundle of joy!
Thanks for the kind words John O!
@@ilikeconsumerism we did it we made an internet fan! Our work here is complete!
Wow that is difficult
Wow Shoji, did not know you sing overtones ! Great artist who understand MUSIC... who IS music ! thanks for sharing
Saw them for the first time - live tonight in Dunsmuir, CA ... intimate setting ... 35-40 people in the audience. Great concert!
Love this song
Is that Abe Lagrimas playing with the group?
Cliff Kimura Yes!!! Check out Verdugo Hills too.
Is that one guy bowing a Koto? I always knew Korea had bowed Zithers but Japan? I never knew Japan did
Yes, it is a Koto, and it is a traditional Japanese instrument, it has been used in Japan for centuries (since the 7th century).. :) It's the national instrument of Japan and its ancestor is the Chinese zheng. A similar instrument would be the Korean gayageum. ^_^
***** I mentioned that in my reply. "and its ancestor is the Chinese Zheng."..
incredible, as always.
Will this film ever be released? I had the pleasure of seeing it a few years ago at CalState Long Beach and have been awaiting the opportunity to show my friends ever since!
The short is available on DVD - check with Sam Koji Hale mightypug.com/www.samkojihale.com/Welcome.html
Best part is the bloopers ;)
A couple of nights ago I saw Gengakki performed for the first time, and I have to admit that by about 1:30 into the song tears were suddenly steaming down my cheeks from the beauty of the simple koto riff. Wow, did not expect that. If you get a chance to see these guys live, don't miss it. They rock the house and get loud, this is just one of their quiet reflective moments.
Imagine being in the crowd on shrooms
This is the kind of music with which very few of us will be greeted in Heaven.
One can make a video game based on this track alone
Wow, Shoji, that was amazing!! Someone already said it, but On Ensemble IS truly inspirational. As an legit singer, though, this made me cringe - is there some technique you use that this doesn't hurt your vocal chords?
it is called kargyraa and overtone singing
beautiful
Very nice. You can just feel this one in the pit of your stomach.
Saw you guys twice today at the Cam-Plex once for School and one because i was in love with every second of your guys' music i also bought one of your cd code thingys. Thanks for a fun night
Unbelievable tonight at the Dove Library Auditorium in Carlsbad!!! We were so in love with every minute of your playing -- such skill, such joy, such creativity, such wild unity, such amazing sounds!!! Thank you!! I am so inspired to try new things with my instruments and my students!!
Pure Amazing! Presents nice traditional Japanese flavour!
Great playing! Zeecha is still one of my favourite on Ensemble tunes!
wow...thats sooo nice!!
simply beautiful :)
Ugh.... These sounds go into deepest corner of my soul. Will be better with throut sing.. Same the didjeridoo's sound.
Simply beautiful. Can't wait to see the film!

gooossshhh i'm SO JEALOUS of Mas's fue playing!!!
Just got home from watching them a couple of Minutes ago.! Great performance!
Elegantly done. Bravo!!!
Very talented, I like it.
