Since we can no longer buy the glass and tile medium, is it okay to use thr outdoor matte as primer?
Question I'm confused about, some say or use varnish, some sealer. Are these two different steps? Do you use both varnish and sealer?
I actually listened further and heard you mention not needing to be sealed unless recommended. I'll be using decoart Americana acrylics, I'm assuming those don't need to be sealed?
@@jamiejamerson15 I have personally not used those paints so I cannot make a recommendation on them. Do you know anyone that does use them?
I so appreciate this video, as it explains the technique so that the matte varnish is applied correctly- hardly any videos explaining the importance of technique when applying the matte varnish..... sealer. I first applied the matte varnish with a brush and ended up with an extremely shiney baby..... explanation for how and why technique is most important no matter what kind of varnish/sealer you use is not talked about enough. many thanks

It’s Been about almost 10 years since 2014 and I’ve been looking everywhere for a reborn tutorial with the outdoor matte! Im making my second doll but the glass and tile which everyone has been talking about is discontinued so I was worried my doll wouldn’t be made right! Thank you so much ten years later 😂❤

It sure can!! Just don't heat it. Do all of your painting and baking first.

@@Marcyleon608 Awww! Thank you. I forgot to say that if this doll was painted some time ago, please first wash the parts needing matted with warm, mildly soapy water, rinse well in warm water then dry. This removes dust and oils from our hands as we have handled them.

Is it okay to add medium to the matte varnish?
Hmmm, I have not done that before. Is there a reason why you want to or are thinking about adding medium?
I used air dry paint for my first reborn about 5 years ago, but it's totally faded. After wasing the kit, Should I have sealed it before starting my layers of colour washes etc? I have more kits but daren't try painting any more until I know how to prevent the same thing happening again.
It really depends on which paint you used.
@@debbiehenshaw5921 SCN Special Care Nursery. I'm in UK. It was a starter kit. Would it matter if I used a sealant as my first coat?
@@sandrahaigh2976 No, not necessarily. The paints need to be well stirred from the bottom of the bottle in order that the medium be stirred in. Painting vinyl is a science. Sometimes the vinyl alone can cause issues. That said, for the next doll, I would recommend using the SCN Matte Varnish when you are all finished painting your doll. Let me know how it goes!
@@debbiehenshaw5921 Thank you for your reply. I always made sure that the washes were well mixed, and I did use the SCN matte varnish, so maybe the vinyl is the problem. I can't think of any other reason, so fingers crossed for the next one 🙂
@@sandrahaigh2976 Did you use rubbing alcohol on your kit? 100% of the people who write to me with paint problems say they use the rubbing alcohol. I do not use rubbing alcohol on my kits.

@@maryjanecade1321 vinyl? The areas with dish soap and water. Rinse well then do the best you can to match the paint. This is a very hard thing to fix. Good luck!

No, I do not use water in the matte varnishes but the brushes and plates clean up with warm water.

I really do not know as I haven't tried it. For glossing eyes I like Aleene's Paper Glaze.

@@dennisarcega837 I really do not know the answer to that question. I would not recommend it though as I do not think it would be compatible.
@@dennisarcega837 The Glass and Tile medium states to use on "Non Pourus" surfaces so I would guess that no, you cannot use it on leather. The Outdoor Matte Sealer states to use it on any cured surface, so possibly, yes.

How much do you use
I do not have a specific measurement, but I put about a nickel size down on the plate at a time. Use that before it dries, then clean the plate for the next nickel size. Does that make sense?

If it is artist grade acrylic paint, yes.
Hi thank you for the video. Have you ever had the tile and glass medium remove paint? This happened to me, last time. I am planning to make another reborn, and I want to avoid that issue, this time. Maybe I did something wrong.
Hi Ray Ray, Only if the paint wasn't cured well enough. In my arid/dry climate, curing takes 24-48 hours. In your area, it may take longer depending on your humidity. Let me know how it goes!

Yes! If your doll isn't freshly painted, be sure to wash the parts with soap and water to remove and dust, dirt or natural oils from your hands. Rinse and dry.

There are many videos on reborn dolls to look at to see how the paints are used. It should be a light baby pink, mixed with a a tiny bit of flesh tone. I bought Honeybunn nursery’s air dry paints and they are all labeled, and premixed with instructions on what they are for. I can’t wait to start.

It depends on the product. The Folk Art Glass and Tile can be used before or after painting while the Folk Art Outdoor Sealer should only be used afterwards.
