Story Time Lugh Arrives at Teamhair
Today’ story is adapted from Irish mythology. I am going to do the best that I can with the pronunciations but I don’t speak Irish, neither ancient or modern. Up front I’m going to ask forgiveness for any blunders I might make.
That being said, I’m trying to work in ancient Irish so some of what you hear might sound weird, even if I get the pronunciation right.
As my primary source I’m using, Gods and Fighting Men, 1905 by Lady Augusta Gregory. I’ve also referenced Celtic Myths and Legends, 1917 by T. W. Rolleston and the Lebor Gabala Erenn.
I thought about getting all scholarly with this but, truth be told, I’m more storyteller than scholar. And I’m a bit lazy, too.
I have taken a few liberties with the story in an effort to craft a tale for more modern folks and, if you know anything about the source material, you might find things to be a bit…well, different. If you’re looking for an authentic retelling of this story you’re going to need a time machine. What has come down to us has passed through so many hands that who’s to say what was added through the many intervening years.
Storytelling is a living art. It grows and changes.

Excellent coverage on a topic that I often think is poorly covered, Skagi. I find that newer practitioners struggle with the idea of intention and will because they just expect to follow a method. Further, when individuals gain some amount of confidence later on they start struggling with the use of methods instead, believing that a well defined intention and strong will is enough (and sometimes it can be, but it is not efficient). In particular your archery analogy sums up the idea well; sure, you can throw your arrow and it will still be an arrow, but will that be enough? A well defined and prepared method also implies that your intention is well defined and that your will is strong in the first place: If you can't even get off your ass to do something, then do you want it as badly as you think? The section on journaling is also broadly useful. Sometimes I'll help people troubleshoot rituals and they won't be able to define things like how they felt or what was in their mind at specific key points, as they didn't record keep and would be reporting in like a month or so later (They do usually at least give the spell, in these cases a summoning, some time to show results). They'd naturally forget the details, so all I could do is give them a lecture about these ideas. Sometimes that's enough but if someone has some internal opposite feeling that comes out during these workings that they don't understand, for example, then troubleshooting becomes extremely necessary. Audio quality seemed like it could be a bit better, but your actual ability at speaking is very strong compared to a lot of content creators. I'll see you Friday, if my New Years Illness is gone by then anyway.

Coming from a Catholic background, I struggled with The Hierophant because it reminded me of something I was trying to get away from, the suffocating rules that seemed all about control and nothing at all about the teachings of its founder. The explanation of the card from The Urban Tarot and your insights from the Qabalah (or however you spell it, I know just enough to get confused) have given me a lot to think about.

Since you never found anything about a murder, I wonder whether Robert hushed it up. Back in those days if you had money or influence you could get away with a lot (actually that hasn't changed much). Maybe she was what my uncle from Vinemont would have called a "fancy woman," or maybe that's the story Robert told. The hotel was probably happy for any reason to sweep it all under the rug. I wonder whether all she wanted was someone to witness what actually happened, and that would give her peace.

Wow, that is *not* where I expected this story to go. The really good "monster" stories, the ones that stay with us and make us think, are the ones that show us that beneath the Other is a soul that we can connect with if we can manage to see beyond our fear. Oh, and Payday candy bars. They rock!

Buildings really do take on the energy of those who live or work or worship in them. Just like Dr Murphy and Moss Bridge, I believe they can be portals in time for spirits that are attached to them for one reason or another. Reggie seems to have been a gentle soul who loved his home and felt responsible for it. He must have recognized something in you that he trusted, and chose to share his beautiful drawings with you. I am sorta surprised that he didn't clean the mess up after you left, though :)

The covered bridges I have seen have felt like time doesn't quite move the same around them. Even in broad daylight they have a sense of existing in more than one reality. Maybe that old bridge was Dr Murphy's link to this world and when it was gone he (and his horses) could finally rest.

Years ago, I sat for a while at the base of a giant old redwood tree in Muir Woods. I got a feeling of deep roots and of vast time passing seamlessly. Endless patience and peace. I really did not want to leave that tree. Going back into the world was a shock to my system. I had the distinct feeling I had been outside of time. But not all the trees felt like that. Some of them felt angry. Not sure at what, exactly. Maybe people and our encroachment on places that had always been theirs. I wonder whether the old man was actually a forest spirit who shared that anger at people, and finally lashed out when they wouldn't leave him alone. Maybe his spirit entered that tree (maybe the tree was one of the angry ones) when the body it occupied was murdered, then had to watch people crowd up all around him and not have the ability to move. You showed up and offered yourself to him, and who knows what he might have done had that squirrel not taken pity on you.

Has anyone ever seen in any of the various cards, the sun not depicted as a bountiful source of life? Interestingly, to me, the sun causes water to evaporate. One of my big regrets is that I did not let my dad teach me how he used the Farmer's Almanac. He planted his garden by it, planned his doctor and dental appointments by it, and chose dates for our family vacations by it. I was a young teenager then and had no time for old folks' stuff. I noticed in the Urban Tarot card, the bottle of water spilling into the street has created a puddle that reflects the star above it. That sort of thing helps me feel hopeful about an earthly situation that I see no way out of. The beauty of the star Sam Gamgee saw in Mordor gave him the strength to carry Frodo through the end of his terrible journey. PS You are not sorry about that, LOL

(Sooner or later I'm going to learn not to watch these while I'm drinking a beverage. My keyboard wishes I would learn this sooner.) I feel like I've spent a lot of time as the Fool. Heading in a direction I was completely sure was the right way, only to have the ground give way beneath my feet. Then after I pick myself up and get the dirt out of my pockets and my hair, I look around and find that my idea of the right way has changed. And off I go again. Lather, rinse, repeat. I wonder whether this is what Jerry Garcia meant about a long, strange trip?

I had struggled for a while with accepting Swords as Air, I thought they should be Fire. Thanks to your patient teaching, I now understand the reasoning and it makes sense to me.

To be perfectly honest...in my personal witchy practice, I associate pointy things...swords, knives, and the like...with Fire myself. With the Tarot (and there are a few decks which do the Swords=Fire thing) we just have to shift our perspective a bit. It's less about the symbol for the element and more about the element itself. After that, it's just algebra...

I started out with some of those very same books on Wicca when I first began practicing in the late 90's!

They are quite enduring and I think that has something to say about them... Thanks for watching!
