Today I went out for a circular walk I often do when my head is a bit full. Sadly it is not possible to escape from man made noise where I live, but on a windy day like today, the noise is muffled by the wind. I took some Contact Microphones and a small stereo microph...

    What difference do you notice between the cardiod and hyper cardiod patterns on the C414? or either mic? Does that pattern reduce your noise floor at all or is that difference negligible when compared to cardiod? Thanks !

    Hi. This video comparison has made me feel sure that I want to return OC18, which I received yesterday. I've compared OC18 to my MKH-416 and felt that it's a bit boomy/boosted in the low frequencies, which hasn't worked for my voice (MKH-416's slight boost in the high end works well for my voice). With OC18 I feel I would need to do post work to reduce the lower frequency boost. I had also bought Austrian Audio's dynamic mics and their SDC CC8 and felt their mics aren't really what I expected/hoped. I think I'll go with an AKG C414 XLII. Thanks for this video.

    I look at the akg 414 but the price used still quite high so I pick up the oc16 right mic right price. It’s smooth a little too smooth lost the bass in my voice but still it’s quite clean. I still prefer the sm7b give me quite a bit of bass in my voice.

      I purchased a Behringer UV1 channel strip to replace my 25 yr old DBX 286a, and then turned on the low cut filter and tuned down the LF enhancer. I think a more treble voice might work well. I also purchased an Aston Origin which sounds great imho. The Element cost me $79 so it was worth taking a chance on it. I think it could be used in certain situations that require the unique bass response that it affords, like with Manchester Music's low soft voice.

    to me for this specific app the 414 is prefereble. one obvious diference is in the low-mid response of this mic is way more pleasing to my ear than the 818 that grabs too muchof it.

    There's a much richer lower end to the 818...its my go to mic. But....the c414 is without doubt , a mic you should not be without. It's got a gorgeous sweet top end that captures acoustic guitars...and to go 1 further...get the xls..its a tad brighter than the standard 414. To get back to the 818 though...what a tremendous mic. Its fluent throughout...a rich deep toned mic that will be proven to be the recorders choice for many a year to come

    • @theclaverman
      @theclaverman ปีที่แล้ว

      XLS is definately not the brighter 414. That goes to 414 XL II. XL II has a lift in the top end and was designed to to be similar to the old and more open sounding 414EB which had a CK12 capsule.

    Wow, very impressed with the Austrian! So many good new mic brands around at the moment, hard to choose between a classic and one of these new things. If the OC18 is indeed the same capsule and stuff, that's very tempting. Also great to hear that they treat their customers good! (This is my biggest fear when buying from newer brands. How do they handle their customers? I've heard horror stories.) Thanks for the video!

    Hi Ian, I was curious to know how you're getting on (or not) with the Element, many months on? I've become more serious about voiceover myself, including commercial work (normally the domain of the MKH 416), and thought the Element might be worth another look? There's a dearth of information about it for voiceover.

    • @ianpringle7259
      @ianpringle7259 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Colin. I think for the money it's not bad for voiceover. Having said that, have I once picked it up for a VO job? No I have not. Its low end still troubles me and yes you can juts roll it off but it bothers me that i need to do that. Its funny because it also doesn't actually have that much background noise rejection compared to a good Dynamic Mic. It is currently in my sons room and we use it for playing around with his loop pedal! Check out my video on the Austrian Audio OC818 the cheaper version the OC18 is just as good for VO.

    • @colinmorrison5119
      @colinmorrison5119 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ianpringle7259 Thanks Ian. I think it's safe to say it's not a VO mic. The SE X1S is on sale, I have one, and is working fine - it's quite a neutral all-rounder, with a punchy but not bonkers low end.. It will do until I pick up a few jobs then will look at the LCT 440 Pure, SE2200/SE2300, Sennheiser mk4, and maybe even the OC18, or NTG5 as a cheaper 416 alternative for commercial work.
