With Voices Merry Sing

Hannah, Jean, and Laurie are together for this final episode of NO FRILLS ROUNDS, playing "With Voices Merrily" by Evan Stephens, 1899. This was played in two ways - first, as a traditional round that builds with the addition of each part, and next as a canon, beginning and ending at the same time from three different points in the melody. If you have enjoyed listening to these, you can play al...

I looked everywhere for this round, to try to find the lyrics. I finally found a transcription of a round said to be by Evan Stephans, 1899, "With Voices Merry" The tune is the same. 🙂And the lyrics are "With voices merry, sing tra-la-la-la-la-la-la. Tuneful and cheery, sing tra-la-la-la-la-la-la. Tra-la-la-la-la, tra-la-la-la-la. Tra-la-la-la." Are these the lyrics you use/have? By the way, I know a prolific LDS composer, Evan Stephans, who was director of the Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City from1890 to 1910. So I know he was composing in 1899. He also taught music education at the school that became the University of Utah. I wonder if this round was written by him. Do you have any more data about its origin?
It is by Evan Stephans, 1899. And you're totally correct about the title and lyrics! Good job tracking that down, Susan!! Send a fb pm and I'll share it with you :-)
Thanks, ladies!
Thank you for watching!!
Love this round - finally figured out the tuning is DAD with a capo on the first fret. Shanah Tova, and Shalom, chaverim!
Awesome! So beautiful! Watching from Wisconsin
Thank you!!
Thank you. One of my favorites
So glad you like this one!
I had forgotten this round! I've done arrangements of Hey, Ho, Nobody Home (even one for Christmas) But this has a lovely folk lyric that I remember I really loved singing as a young woman.
Heigh Ho, Peace Round, Rose Rose...all similar, yet different! What is the one for Christmas? I always like to know more rounds!!
@@NoFrillsJam I do a Christmas "caroling" lyric for Hey, Ho: Instead of "Yet I will be Mer------ry," I sing, "Still, I wish you Merry Christmas."
@@SusanCallHutchison That works!! :-)
oops - that reply was from my other TH-cam account! Laurie 🤣
Very pretty ❤
Thank you!! ♥
Beautifully done ladies. Love the melody, then the harmony together. Wowza!
Thank you so much! I learned this at Sandy's Music Girls Camp, the first year I was there..2018??.
@@NoFrillsJam that’s so awesome!!!
Nicely done ladies!
Thank you!!
Not familiar with this song. I'll have to look for some lyrics.
Hi Susan, Here's the chorus for this fun tune! Chorus: Dance, boatman, dance, dance, boatman, dance, Dance all night till the broad daylight, Go home with the gals in the morning. Hi, ho, the boatman row, Sailing down the river on the Ohio, Hi, ho, the boatman row, Sailing down the river on the Ohio, mnheritagesongbook.net/the-songs/texts-and-additional-notes-on-printed-songs/dance-boatman-dance/
And before BLOOPERS were added!
The beginning section reminds me of Shortnin’ Bread.
I hear that, too! 😂
Very nice!
Thank you! And thanks for subscribing 😊
Thanks for a great one to practice flat picking on!
You're very welcome! Thanks for your comments!
This is beautiful! I have been wondering if I have been "cheating" by anchoring my pinky and ring finger of my strumming/picking hand - because it feels natural to me, but I haven't seen anyone else do it. And today you advised me to do exactly what I have been doing!
It really helps me to anchor pinky and ring fingers to the side of the fretboard. It gives me something to push against and a home base. Glad that advice helped you!!
Lovely! Such a good tune for introducing interval training: Is the next note in the melody a "step" or a "jump?"
Listening for intervals! Yay!!
What a perfect song for a beginner! The drone harmony is written right into the round.
Thanks Susan! Also if this is played as a canon (rather than one line added at a time), the beginner player might just stick with the last line of open strumming. I call it "line specialists" 🤣
@@NoFrillsJam Great term for a great idea, Laurie. What's more fun that being an important part of a group making beautiful music?
@@SusanCallHutchison THANK YOU! 🙂
That was really pretty!
Thank you! I think it's especially lovely when the third voice is added...the harmony pops!
Nice!.................................................
Thanks! It's a great tune that's fun to play 🙂
Still laughing at this one!!! 🤣🤣🤣
You know, of course, that I say, "NO FRILLS" with you every time. <3 Love this beautiful old spiritual.
Haha! I listened to "Liza Jane" from 04-31-23 the other day and our No Frills opening was ridiculously FAST! You'd have trouble saying it with us! 🤣🤣🤣
Also, thanks for watching and commenting, Susan! 💙
Love the vocalist and the Melrose group! Always fun to see different ways to enjoy music!
Thanks Kelly! I'll pass it along to the others :-). BTW you can check in with us on Wednesday mornings (when I'm there)...the usual link.
I loved watching you accompany your talented vocalist!
She's a cutie, that's for sure!! Thanks!!
Thanks for watching, GWP!! 🙂
You play a different melody than the one I learned - but it is a perfect counter-melody to my version.
This melody got stuck in my head many, many years ago after watching "John Denver and The Muppets - A Christmas Together" (1979)!
Would love to hear your version!
Brooke is adorable. Sweet song
Thank you! Hilarious that she immediately started to give chord instruction on her Uke! Chip off the old block???
Thanks for all your suggestions! I am still in my first few weeks of playing dulcimer. I do a lot of sliding with this song. On the chorus, I slide UP to the second fret on the D string (hen) and down to the second fret on the A string (hen). I think I'll try some vibrato now!
Great idea!
Remembering Chester Heights Camp Meeting today, on July 4, 2024, and Watson, Betty, Wesley, Dorothy, Paul, Fred, who had many fun summer outings there swimming under the train trestle.

Wonderful!
Thanks Shirell :-)
That is absolutely sweet ❤

Lovely ❤ You gals are awesome😊
Thanks Laquetta! Hope to see you at the Friday jam sometime!
Love playing along with you ladies. Thanks for doing this song. It's one I've tried on my own: It's kind of like those recipes to "Make a meal with only five ingredients you probably already have in your pantry." Easy to come up with and such a satisfying result.
Love your comments! Thanks!!
Loved playing along with you - so familiar with the alto part of this song, it made sense for me to work out a harmony and bass line as we played together. Thanks for what you are teaching me as I pick up this new instrument -- well, new to me. :)
Bingo! You have discovered the source of my harmony line - I'm an alto as well :-). Glad you enjoy our videos!
Goodness! I didn't realize I could bar with three fingers like that. Gonna work on that technique today!
Or just lay one finger across - which ever is easier for you! Glad you liked it!
@@NoFrillsJam I experimented, and fingertips are definitely better for me than barring with one finger.
That’s the way I bar across the frets, too!
I know this song from a Peter/Paul/Mary album. Lovely!
Thanks! Jean Ritchie's "Peace Carol" is based on this melody... "What a goodly thing if the Children of the world could dwell together in peace..."
Love it ❤ You gals are hilarious 😂
When that song hits the big time, I’m sure you’ll be sharing the profits🤣
I was laughing all the way through this! It just happened to me last night, switching from DAd to DGd. Fortunately, I have several extra string sets. 😅
Like Jean says, "Take an extra set of strings...everywhere you go!' It's a lesson for us all 🙂 THANKS FOR THE COMMENT!!
Ramona! So great to hear her voice again!! She joined our monthly jam sessions, driven to Melrose by Bob and Kay for years. Then, when in assisted living, she called-in for our weekly online jam during covid. What a voice straight out of Kentucky!!
Very impressive performance. So clashy!
Thanks! Very clashy!! I love where the two lines rub up against each other. It took us a few times through before it pulled together on the recording, but happy with the results on the whole. I love that Hannah has joined us!
Cool tune! If you play live you could also use a loop pedal to play rounds!
Great idea!!
Very nice! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for your comment!
Beautiful collaboration. You ladies rock!!!

Thank you, Laquetta!
