How long does my caravan battery last off grid without hookup
มุมมอง 740หลายเดือนก่อน
Running your caravan without electric hook up (EHU) or off-grid causes a lot of people to ask questions on how long they can go before their battery dies. The following video shows how much power items in an Erwin Hymer Group/ Elddis Xplore 304 caravan consume. If your caravan uses the same components, many do, it should give you an idea too. The chart shown is based on a standard lead acid 100...

We visit the Gretna Blacksmiths, the Wall of Love, the maze, the designer outlet village and came back with some Haggis and other souvenirs. A great day being a tourist. Amazing friendly and welcoming staff. Good day had by all.

Interesting. Perhaps you have mainly been touring in chalk geology areas where the water is 'soft' as they say. I suppose you might notice is in your kettle or boiling pans more. North West is a hard water area, hardly any limescale at all. Kind regards Sir.
Nice support columns and load distribution.
Thanks for the great review, I’ve just bought one off the back of watching 👍
Glad it was useful. If only I got some commission 🤔🤣
Connectors that cut into the cable are rubbish, and therefore amateurish. Spring connectors such as Wago and similar are far more reliable. "We have not broken into the cable" - yes you have, you have sliced through the insulation and the conductor. It will work for a while, but a caravan is a vibrating environment and eventually it will break. It costs mo extra to do things properly.
@@funkyronster thanks for your input. Will feed back how it goes, we're away every month.
Fantastic!...Thank you for the very informative video. We are back in the UK for 5 months, and Camping Gaz exchange 906 is 39 quid last time we bought one last year, god knows what it will be now. We last got it filled in Bulgaria for 3 quid. Doing it this way, we are out of rip-off Britain....
Very good idea, just one question, these lifepo4 batteries already have bulit in BMS, under and over charge protection so should in theory be safe to charge with any 12v supply. Why do I need yet another device to regulate charging when there is already one fitted by the manufacturer inside the lifepo4 battery, for this specific purpose?
The BMS does not give the correct voltage it cuts it off. Most chargers in caravans boost charge then switch to lower float voltages, which are not correct for LiFePO4. They will not get fully charged without swapping chargers and could do damage to car etc without correct dcdc chargers.
@@IntrepidIresons What about when charging the battery while driving? How will the car provide the correct charging amperage/voltage? Same question for solar charging if solar panel fitted. Thanks
@@galaxyb1103the renogy DCDC MPPT charger I have does it. Look out for my other videos
Good timing, friend just bought a Bailey with Alde heating, running off-grid with flashing display indicating flat battery, there are no videos about power consumption off grid with heaters and how many panels would be needed to keep system running, now learnt to switch off when not in use, it only has sealed lead acid batteries and one solar panel. Thanks for sharing
If you are using a lead acid batter you are killing it by taking it down to 22%
Mine is LiFePO4. Check out my other vids for the fitting, chargers and solar.
Is this a wind up?
@@crusader-t7s is what a wind up?
You're unfamiliar with the area, but there are free toilets round the front of the cafe you pass as you walk into the park area. You only see the rear of the cafe, but if you walk past the ice cream kiosk, and right around the front, you'll find the toilets right at the end. You can make a donation for the upkeep of the toilet block if you wish, although it's free to get in.... Most of the toilet blocks in the Lake District towns have been sold off by the local authority, and are now owned privately. Hence the ever increasing prices...
Like the rest of Britain, over commercialisation , In the late 50s/60s it was great.
Yes, the Lake District is much busier these days, having gained World Heritage status. Around 18 million people a year visit now..... Living here, I avoid it like the plague. I head over to North Yorkshire for my relaxation with scenery.....Nice little villages, often with a tea shop, and plenty of places to park.. Back in the late 50's and 60's, there weren't 64 million people living in Britain.....
@@Brian-om2hh This is very true, the country was much nicer then. In a way I’m clad that I’m 73 so I hopefully I won’t have to see the country completely ruined by Liebour.
@IntrepidIresons Hi...what power/current limit did you program into the DC2DC charger to limit the power taken from the car. I'm thinking 13A? as the fuse is 15A...TIA
You can only do whole numbers, 5,10,20,30 etc. If youre getting permanently fitted panels and they're generating it splits the charge between two, so 10 is 5car and 5 solar. I put it at 20 during the day and 10 at night.
@IntrepidIresons thanks for that..imlooking at the victron kit and O don't think they do a combined mppt & dc2dc converter so they would have to be seperate feeds to the battery..so only 125w panel through the mppt direct to the battery then the same 12v feed off the fuse box to the dc2dc...so it would have to be 10A unless the victron can be set to intermediate A values...thoughts?
@deanswan6109 I looked at victron too. Only suitable DCDC I could see was the Orion 12|9 and then have to get the separate mppt. Not only less amps, more boxes and wiring but also a lot more expensive and separate apps.

Hi where did you get your Sim from?
@@ColineClarkdecathlon
Did you need to take a negative from the car and if so where from. Also how does the relay wire up .
No, uses the existing negative feed through the 13pin plug and existing caravan wiring, negative and relay. Only changes needed are on the positive side.
@IntrepidIresons Thanks for the clarification on the wiring setup...I like the idea of minimal changes to the van (means you can reinstate the old system and move your new system to another van etc). Personally, I would of wired the PSU/charger back into the 12v distribution network and maybe fitted the new PSU/charger in place of the old and stored away the old one for reinstatement. Your videos have been a great help in "how to DIY" your own system. I will have further Q's but thanks again.
Glad it was helpful!
Just wondering how your system is working...have you evaluated it yet? Are you happy with it? Is there anything you'd do to improve it in retrospect? TIA
It's amazing. Only change would really be neatening up the wiring.... May do it one day....

Hi, if you subscribe to my channel and look through all I show all of the solar fitting and fitting the TV, I always try to link to all the products in the descriptions of the videos
I extended my cables from the solar panels using solder and heat srink cable sleeves. The plugs were then able to be inside the van and hidden.
@@johnlangfield3532 good idea
What A brilliant idea.I wish I know about this years ago before I bought a caravan with a fixed bed. We used to use a topper and put it inside a duvet cover insead of a fitted sheet.
Prefer to have the memory foam mattress topper than the faff of having to get that self inflating mattress out. Besides it's a lot easier to fold up and pack away the topper than the self inflating mattress.
Benefit of this to us was it doesn't scrunch up under you, no having to tuck it in etc
If you like this hints and tips. Ideo, please watch out others and don't forget to subscribe for more!
I'm new to caravanning....surely this would mean that the Battery will not be charging as you drive to your next destination...only when your on EHU or solar
@@deanswan6109 it is wired to the dcdc charger that does the charging via that cable rather than directly into the battery that would do damage
@@IntrepidIresons ok...how does it do that?....is the negative switched to ground when charging is required? I would be interested to see a video on installing the DCDC converter if you have one.
I'll do one tomorrow, if you're not already if you turn on subs and notifications you should be pinged. But all negatives are joined together, the solar and the battery. I've taken an easy feed from the motor mover negative. Have to remember negatives are always connected, it's the lives that are isolated/ fused. Look out for the video and it'll show tomorrow.
