skate sailing on the St Louis River, Spirit Lake, Duluth, MN 1/3/25

1/3/25. 5º finally a sunny day to film 1st tracks at Spirit Mt. 1" frozen, hard packed granular groom over a rough ice base. A real bone rattler for carving. Riding a new Thirst 167 "Tonya". Rode for an hour, then took a run on my 9sw (193cm) Thirst which is the smoothest ride in my quiver and still got bounced around a lot. We need new snow.

Carving turns riding a 175cm alpine snowboard with hard boots. Out west, this would be called ice, but is typical conditions for a lot of midwest ski resorts an inch or so of granular over an ice base. Snowriver is better known for having lots of dry lake effect powder with Aspen-like conditions, but not on this day.

Last sail of the 2022 season in our Westsail32 making hull speed on a nice beam reach along the north shore of Minnesota. Sailing home to Duluth after a summer circumnavigation of Lake Superior. Music is the Skye Boat Song by the Corries.

11/29/24 Recently found this Catspaw dinghy for sale on craigslist. Designed by Joel White based on the N G Herreshoff Columbia tender. Built by a Duluth boat builder in 2011. She is well built, copper riveted, cedar strip planking on oak frames. The top of the transom is broken off and needs to be repaired. Otherwise she is in very nice condition.
