Marian & Darrell Murphy Interview
In an oral history interview conducted by the Nevada County Historical Society, siblings Marion Murphy Jewett and Darrell Murphy shared their family's deep-rooted connection to Grass Valley, California. Their grandparents and father emigrated from Canada in the early 20th century, drawn by the region's mining industry. Darrell recounted his father's experiences working as a relief hoistman at the Empire and Pennsylvania mines, emphasizing the close-knit community of miners and their families. Marion shared her memories of growing up in the area, attending Union Hill School, and participating in community activities. She spoke fondly of her time as a nurse at Weimar Medical Center, a former tuberculosis sanatorium that later became a general hospital. Both siblings highlighted the importance of community service, with Darrell discussing his involvement in disaster relief efforts and the Hospitality House, a local homeless shelter. Marion shared the history of the Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society, a charitable organization founded in 1873 to support struggling families in the community. The interview concluded with a reflection on the changes Grass Valley has undergone over the years, as the once-thriving mining town transitioned into a popular destination for newcomers seeking a quieter lifestyle. Despite these changes, the Murphy siblings expressed their enduring love for the community and their commitment to preserving its rich history.

Please also consider purchasing a copy of Emigrant Tales of the Platte River Raids (M Press, 2023) and Evidence for the 1864 John Brown Family Camp Corral Sketch (M Press, 2024). There is extensive research revealing important discoveries and source record sharing in the nonfiction and the research findings that will amplify and clarify the story of the Brown family's journey. BOTH are essential reading for this type of study.

The engine 2-8-0 #9 show mostly in the video was an engine that was originally built for the Nevada California Oregon Rwy as their 14. May 1928 was when it was purchased by the Southern Pacific and was used on the Mina branch. Renumbered to 1, the engine didn’t last long on the railroad due to its weight and tractive effort compared to the SPNG 4-6-0s. In 1933, the 2-8-0 was renumbered to 9 as shown in this video. The 9 received a square tender since it was needed to fit on the NCNG’s turntables and the whaleback tender was given to SPNG 22. (22 was originally a F&CC engine, then bought by the NCO and transferred to the SP a decade later, scrapped in 1949) NCNG 9 (as shown in this video) was the last and largest locomotive on the line. I suppose it was more ideal to the railroad than the 2 previous railroads. The 9 pulled a fantrip in May 1937. It served the railroad until the end of the operations in July 1942. That wasn’t the end quite yet, when WWII broke out, the U.S. Navy acquired the engine as well as many freight cars. The 9 was renumbered to L-17 and converted to an 0-8-0, mainly to switch freight cars there. After the war ended, there were rumors that the engine was scrapped, but some say it was sent to the Philippines. I believe this engine could be scrapped. Correct me if I’m wrong if any information above me is inaccurate, but this is what I gathered about the engine. I recently visited the NCNGRR Museum and saw the Tahoe, which was a wonderful looking mogul.
