From Rock Bottom to Redemption With Rocky Romano
This week, Rocky Romano joins us on the Gentle Art of Leadership Podcast. He gets real, raw, and unfiltered about his life’s traumas and wounds that led him to a deep and ugly heroin addiction. Rocky dives deep into the emotional wounds, abandonment issues, and patterns of self-sabotage that quietly derail men’s lives.
From chasing success to numbing pain with quick fixes, Rocky doesn’t hold back as he shares his personal story, including a life-changing moment checking into rehab in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. But his story isn’t just about hitting rock bottom-it’s about the breakthrough that came when he shifted his mindset from self-focused to serving others, and ultimately found his faith in Jesus.
These passions led Rocky to help launch the ARK Sober Living Facility in Loveland, Colorado. The Ark focuses on Christ centered sober living, equipping men with faith, fellowship and life skills to STAY sober for a lifetime. At ARK, men are not only given tools for recovery, but hope, purpose, and a path back to who they were created to be.
As we discuss these topics, Rocky shares excerpts from his book: Rock Bottom: The Heroin Addict Next Door.
This podcast isn’t just Rocky’s story-it’s a guidebook for any man (or anyone who loves one) searching for healing, purpose, and a life that truly matters.
Expect raw conversations, real-world tools, and a reminder that no matter how broken the road, redemption is always possible.
Tune in, lean in, and get ready for the kind of honesty that leads to transformation-one story, one step, one breakthrough at a time.

@@stevehamoen nice to meet you here. Troy, my guest on the podcast who is the bald guy is also my business partner and long time training partner. He is a long time judoka, many degrees of black belt. He is first degree BJJ black. And he is bald and beautiful 😀. He loves basic and simple efficient throws to get you to the ground and is a savage choking artist. He avoids bottom but underneath likes half but just prefers to choke people, especially me. He is not a guard pull or fit into half guard kimd of guy but is very dangerous if he ends up there. My game is totally different. What about you? Would love to hear more about your journey and game. I would enjoy if you have a chance to watch our entire podcast episode. I hope it brings you value.

Good job!! Sandy is my sister - Duane is my Dad. The book is spot on! I remember around 7th grade wanting to go live in Las Vegas and I was told no, by my Mom and step-dad. Years later, I remember saying to Sandy - there's no way I could've survived living here when I was staying for a couple weeks after I had graduated from high school. I had gotten to see what it was like without all of us in the household and a huge reality hit me. I'm that "step-sister" with the ex-husband who absolutely loves my red-headed step-sister!! I couldn't be more proud of all of her accomplishments and she's an awesome individual.

Yep. Remember, HR is there to Reduce Risk for the company. They are there to help the company mitigate issues and avoid lawsuits. They are not on your side. If you have a REAL problem at working, you need to collect evidence and be able to provide the receipts. You can use HR to help mitigate some issues, but you need to protect YOURSELF.

Harlee Newman, the best dad ever, his story amazes me every time I hear it. This man is my Super Hero, he came from nothing and made himself successful, regardless of others' perception of him. My father is my motivation! He has always told me "never say you can't"! EVER!, growing up I had a very bumpy life, Gang Banging, using drugs, drinking, fighting, I was mad at the world just like my father was. But I was lucky, when I was finally committed to Juvenile lock up, he was there for me, he told me "it's never to late to change your path", and again NEVER SAY YOU CANT"! Alot happened in my life as well as my dad's, but no matter what, when I called or reached out he has always been there. I made mistakes, I got distant from him as well as the rest of my family and continued to screw up. But I always remembered what he would tell me, "nothing is given to you, you must get it yourself, work hard for it, go to school, take care of your family, and be HAPPY! Don't think of your past, but change your future, you are destined for great things, only if that is what YOU, want!" I had my first son at 15, and had three more before I hit 25, I was still a mess, but when I seen my Father become successful, climb out of the hell he went through, and married an amazing woman, and had children with her, it showed me that, if my Dad can do it I can! I am now an Independent Sales Rep for Vector Marketing, working on Becoming Branch Manager, as well as getting started on my side career doing what I love, being a Recovery Coach for people that struggle with addiction and are just beginning Recovery. I am also a student at South New Hampshire University, majoring in Psychology/Drug and Alcohol addiction specialist. I struggled quite a bit as an adult having 4 kids, and a wife, but Harlee..my dad was always in my head and always a call away, showing me how to be the man I was meant to be. I'm sorry for the long message lol, It's just that Harlee's life and the person he is made me who I am! He is an amazing man, an amazing dad, and an amazing husband. And from what he has shown me, I can use this to make my life better and be successful, as well as keep my 4 sons on the right path! I love you dad, you are incredible, never forget that you have made a huge impact on my life and everyone around you for the better! So I truly wanted to say THANK YOU! For being you and showing me the way to become a great man, father, and husband!!. You are my superhero. POPS!
