Henry Cow - Live at the Explorer's Club, Late 1972 or Early 1973
Very old tape and very muddy sound... historically priceless for it may be the earliest recording of "Nirvana for Mice". This is a continous set made of various excerpts and it'd be a bit of a hassle to provide timestamps for all of them (but I may do it whenever I got the time for it), but it goes something like this:
Nirvana for Mice
Ruins Introduction
Teenbeat
Bee
Improvisation
Amygdala
Teenbeat Reprise
Guider
Improvisation
Ruins Extract
Yellow Half-Moon Extract
Themes (off "Came to See You")
Nine Funerals of the Citizen King
This concert is commonly shared as "Rainbow Theatre with Faust". I have no info that suggests it being from either the Explorer's Club or the Rainbow aside from the .txt file on this bootleg, so more info would be appreciated!
Tim Hodgkinson - Woodwinds, Keyboards & Voice
Fred Frith - Guitars & Viola
John Greaves - Bass Guitar & Voice
Chris Cutler - Drums & Percussion
Geoff Leigh - Woodwinds

This is a very important tape for the fact it's even earlier than the Explorer's gig (judging by the tracklist and by info from the HC book) and it's got a few oddities. The tracklist is also a continuous set of various fragments of early tunes (most appearing on the box set and other official records), so it's a bit of a mess; after repeated listens I concluded the following: Unknown Tune Yell...

It's not very known that more exists from this legendary concert. The rest of it was officially released by the band on the 1974-75 CD of the fantastic Henry Cow Box Set. Here you can hear the rest of the gig; a very crazy improvisation, good quality and a great listen overall! 0:00 - Halsteren Tim Hodgkinson - Woodwinds & Keyboards Fred Frith - Guitars & Viola John Greaves - Bass Guitar & Voic...

Excellent sound quality and full of fantastic improvisations. The opening one features an untitled introduction piece the band never played again. As far as I'm aware, this also includes the earliest recording of "Half the Sky" (its first section, at least). Exciting version of "Teenbeat" and and insane solo by Fred on "Ruins". 0:00 - Oriago I 13:02 - Viva Pa Ubu 13:10 - The Big Tune I 16:06 - ...

Fantastic sound quality and sick performance. The "New Suite" is presented in an early form just like their concert in Bourges just a few days later. The order is different than the finished version as seen on Bremen, featuring a strange interlude between "The Big Tune" and "Van Fleet" in the style of "Beautiful as the Moon". The untitled piece after Jackie-ing (written through about five "Fred...

One of the most interesting concerts of the band for a number of reasons: it has an extremely long version of "Erk Gah" clocking at more than 30 minutes (mainly due to its 10 minute long improvised introduction), an improvisation based on motifs off "Nirvana For Mice" but most importantly, an early version of the Art Bears' tune "In Two Minds" off their debut album. Beautiful versions of "Would...

"Bittern Storm Over Ulm" sadly incomplete. Fantastic versions of "Nirvana for Mice" and "Teenbeat", the last which features a strange moment of the cows jamming with an ecstatic audience. The encore features a strange improvisation, possibly made to resemble the style of "Would You Prefer Us to Lie" or "Bucket Waltz". 0:00 - Nirvana for Mice 7:21 - Beatiful as the Moon; Terrible As an Army with...

I Love this bloke. His voice is sublime!!
A lot of what Robert says about forsaking extra production and "presentation" sounds rather punk!
Un joli portrait du modeste génie
Grazie Alfreda per aver curato e accompagnato il genio di Robert nel lungo percorso della vostra vita! Auguri Bob per i 50 anni di ROCK BOTTOM!
I was there. HC were not only the 4 mentioned but more.
Do you have more info on this? Thanks!
@@bn7550 unfortunately only my memories. I remember a girl was also playing with HC.
It's looks like a mosquito that bumps while flying desperately on a wall in a confined atmosphere 🥴🦗
Beautiful , beautiful from the heart
grazie: comunque e sempre.... Thank you Robert. Forever.
The man with the saddest voice in the world , A great Musician Y was always a Huge fan and saw him life with Soft Machine and Machine Mole <3 thanks for posting
The work lives with the look we give it. she is not limited to what it is, nor to the person who produced it, it is above all made by the person who hears it. Music, painting, literature are a space for questioning and meditation where the meanings we attribute to them can come and be made and undone . Ceci est exceptionnel 😘
I much prefer the Facelift version from 69 than from 70 (including the one in Third). The 69 version is a bit more structured, the 70 version takes too much time to take off.... Anyway thanks for this!
Beyond the anarchies, this band denounced the apparent order and the paradoxes of an insensible world. Spiritual, sensory and rebellious, these poets reveals secret impostures, explores serene enjoyments, a world of rekindled dreams🌺🙂
Love it ❤
Along with Woodstock and Bath '70 THIS festival featured my FAVORITE gathering of bands EVER! The Septet! WOW!
Was this a bootleg, does anyone know?
Over his transition from the most athletic player in the band through to his confinement to a wheelchair, Robert never skips a beat. His musical integrity knows no bounds.
This is a fabulous recording, thanks for the listen. Loved these guys since day 1. Some of the best improvised music ever.
bn: some collection, sir or ms,,, with tears in my eyes. : ) a true moonjunista!
Hopefully soon on CD? No video that i could notice. (Binoculars) Oh. thanks for sharing
Wish there was visual to go with the audio.
M bn: un nouveau ici. Passe ceci à Leonardo *moonjune records* je t'en prie. moonjunistas todos. Et. Merci
Oh! Lest I forget. Thanks for the upload, bn.
I saw them around about this time, supporting Steve Hillage at The Greyhound, Croydon. Unforgettable - and for all the right reasons! Such a great band. So 'loose' yet so together. This is tricky music to play, folks!
Thank you to all the Pink Floyd fans who suggested titles for this RARE STUDIO BOOTLEG from around '69. Again, this song; 1. was about 6 minutes long and sung by Roger,I believe 2. It featured an upbeat renissance-like organ melody which sounded like a psychedelic WALTZ and a trippy middle 8 guitar solo with wah-wah and distorted sounds 3. The lyrics were of one's reminiscing of a young love with movements captured in time and still flowing in his mind The song wasn't "summer of '68. If anyone has a STRONG INTUITION about this song, please feel free to participate with your title suggestions Thanks!❤
Excellent quality and performance. Saw them once (the quartet) at Slugs in NYC, either in summer of '70 or '71 - also a great show. Soft Machine just wasn't the same after Robert Wyatt left.
I had no idea they were in the States again with Wyatt after the Jimi Hendrix tour.
Well. Hugh's brother did the studio albums. First or second..
Amazing Stereo Audience Tape!!!
Some interesting unreleased material, right after 'Bryden 2 Step' from their 2nd album. (In fact, this date would have even been before their first was released, although already recorded.) Not sure if John Greaves was in the band yet, or if it's Neil Murray at this gig? Great audience recording.
Where can i download it?

So wonderful to hear a live recording of such amazing quality! I was fortunate enough to have been able to attend a concert in Toronto in the late’70s at the Victory Theatre on Spadina Ave. Great to revisit “The Machine “!
Robert waytt... Le génie par excellence
Thanks Robert. Absolutely love you.
コレはハマるぜ⬆️ ピーターバラカン🎉
I went full Canterbury early 1970,miami: found Soft Machine vols 1 and 2. Vynil bin. I was 17, already a Caravan fan. Cuban american. ImagineSM, Egg. etc starved in england. Almost NO RECORDINGS! In JAHpan, Europe more appreciated. Even in South America.. in the uk you live in a van
Fabulous !! Thank you for this ~
This is the real Soft Machine!
Well, an argument can be made that only the Kevin Ayers lineup is the REAL Soft Machine (not even the Daveid Allen original). I LOVE the incredibly rare septet, but that they're incredibly rare is proof positive they weren't the "real" band, only one (brilliant) rendition thereof.
I do love Neil Murray in this band.
Absolutely appalling audio quality and so bad it should never have been uploaded
It’s standard to learn French in school in UK. But he’s no slouch, so lovely am I right?
Nice live, thanks for sharing bro 🌌
