    In the 70s I self taught and finger picked with just my thumb and pointer finger and over the decades and was pretty good. I only knew how to play a few songs and COVID 19 I started online lessons. But, learning the proper way to finger pick as you are showing was tough unlearning the old and learning to use the three fingers and thumb. Now that I am finger picking properly as you are teaching it's unmatched to the old way and in every way. Wish TH-cam was around decades ago. All that lost time playing the same ol' songs

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@teddyspaw haha good eye!! Ya it’s great for changing chords in the key of “A”. I teach my beginner students to do that. Then the first finger basically becomes an anchor finger or guide finger. You don’t have to lift it when changing to D. And you just slide it back a fret when changing to E. I talk about it a bit in my other videos!

    That's a really good lesson. If you grow out those three nails how long do they need to be? I do mechanic work and always seem to break mine so I keep them short.

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Ronnie, Thanks by the way! They don't have to be long at all. Just grow them a bit longer or long enough so that the string is able to launch off them if that makes sense. The idea is that the string hits the flesh of your finger first then glides off the nail. It gives a really nice crisp sound! Just go a little longer that normal and see how that works. I should do a video on it, ha. I break mine sometimes too! Best of luck!

      Back again. I think I need to write down your tips somewhere. Great stuff. As a retired beginner of 1 year, I have practiced/played 2-3 hours a day. Just plain fun. I regret not using a metronome religiously. But I'll address that in my 2nd year. I'd like to add 2 things I learned this year about beginner guitar. 1. Painful fingers? Really, not a problem. I purchased 91% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol?) And cotton balls at my local Walgreens. I dabbed cotton ball with alcohol and then dabbed my fingertips. I did this before I practiced and after I practiced guitar. It builds callouses on fingertips. For less than 10 dollars my fingers were fine, little guitar pain. 2. Purchase a leather patch about as big as 2 or 3 hands spread. 12 inches by 12 inches. I am right handed so I place it on my right knee while playing guitar. It prevents the guitar from slipping, so I keep the guitar at a right angle to the ground. Beginners seem to let their guitar slip to a 45-degree angle so they can see their strings. Advanced players seem to hold their guitar at a right angle. The leather provides a non-slip surface on your knee. Since you are the pro, does my advice sound useful? Hope so. Excellent video, thanks.

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Hey Richard! Thanks for the added tips! I’ve never heard of that or tried that with the rubbing alcohol! Sounds interesting and I’m glad you found something that works for you! Interesting tip with the leather patch too! You’re right, some beginners tend to hold the guitar at a 45 degree angle! I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying the guitar so much! I can’t think of a better way to spend a retirement! Thanks for your comments!!
