Adamastor - A Titan of the Cape. A fable by Luís Vaz de Camões, immortalizing the Cape of Good Hope
มุมมอง 38321 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Luís Vaz de Camões wrote "Os Lusíadas", a poem about a Titan who was banished to the Cape for eternity. The Cape Of Good Hope is immortalised in the fable which celebrates the Age of Exploration. Bartholomeu Dias was the first European to pass the Cape in 1488. He named it Cape of storms or cabo das tormentas, but the king felt a more inviting name would be Cape of Good Hope. #capeofgoodhope #c...

Cass talks about denningvleis in the video, it comes from 'dendeng', the Javanese word for meat of the water buffalo. Pleasure.
What they are singing in the end is actually a medley of old Cape songs. The original full song seems to be forgotten. I can vaguely remember the old people singing a fuller version when I was a kid.
Firstly, the original Alabama of Cape Town was a small sailing vessel that traded between Saldanha Bay and Cape Town often carrying a cargo of reeds used for thatching or bedding. Hence the words "Nooi, nooi, die rietkooi nooi, die rietkooi is vir my gemaak om daarop te slaap". Secondly the Alabama was, as correctly stated, a vessel of the Confederate States during the American civil war. The vessels she attacked were all ships of the USA merchant fleet so her activities were not indisicriminate, but focused on shipping of the Northern States. Her crew did not necessarily benefit from her activities. She was moored in Cape Town harbour at one point, hardly the actions of a pirate.
There are versions of the "Alibama" being a boat that traded reed beds along the Breede River...but none of this has been proven. The Confederate ship was a raider - it didn't only attack Union ships, it was a privateer - it attacked ships with a cargo of value, which was used to fund the Confederate cause. There was a very fine line between privateers and pirates - what is the distinction between the two?
Amazing video! Thank you!

Just watched a local Indonesian "true story" ghost story channel about a naked male ghost which haunted a Moslem religious school whose penis is as long as 3 meters. Immediately I thought perhaps a tokoloshe got lost in Indonesia hahaha....

You are so wrong Schaapen island is in the Langebaan lagoon. Dassen island is just off the coast at Yzerfontein😮
Actually, both are correct - Schaapen Island is in the Langebaan Lagoon, and Schaap Island is off the Yzerfontein point. Look on a map - it is just below the harbour, at the point.
Schaapen and Skaap are 2 different islands, although Skaap is not always an island, at low tide it is connected to the mainland.
Awesome thanks guys.
Our pleasure!
Its a curse here in NSW Australia
It's the poor animals that suffer.
Maybe, by 3023, Capetonians will have learned something about pronunciation. Wonderful what they do to Tikoloshe, Llandudno, Brackenfell and, of course, Thibault. Anglophones just cannot help themselves. They won't even try, sadly.
Quite interesting that you picked those examples - Zulu, Welsh, Scottish & French - no wonder people have trouble with the correct pronunciation - it could be confusing, considering they are very different languages.
So interesting, never knew about these mining adventures !
Glad you found it interesting!
Hello my name is tyren eksteen and yes im family of Fredrick "eysle" Eksteen ive now i have a story for you my family sold the house many years ago not sure how much money was it sold for tho but i do have information that might lead clue hunters back to the manor in Fredrick's dad's diary (yes he had a diary) he wrote he left money on the property for his family to find leaving only a riddle " with the house light's shine and the gate's close only the key of gold can fined the door" now i can not confirm or deny this story i lost the book but i can provide conformation if anyone is interested now i might have another idea where the gold is kept there is a old celler on the property where a worker went missing 5 months before Fredrick fell with his horse friend i have no clue where it could be only that it's somewhere outside the manor
The worker went missing near the celler of the house im not sure if it's the same celler tho
Quick update there's more to the riddle saying " only in the garden's shall my family's money rest's"
Very interesting...the plot thickens 😅

From my understanding, there is a painting in Den Haag that depicts Jan van Riebeek pretty much as he appeared on SA banknotes. for a long time.😊
History is indeed interesting. It is believed that that painting was in fact Bartholomew Vermuyden. But then again, I never met Jan, so not sure what he looked like. I have although read many journals around that time, where people do describe him.
This is a terrible representation of Kalk Bay. Please learn your history.
Interesting comment.
God bless SA, I am moving to CT next year 😊
We hope you will love your time in CT, we do 😁
@5:56 you mention the Acacia trees. Do you know which species of Acacia this is? You also mentioned traditional healers using it for medicinal purposes. I could not find any information about this online and was hoping you could tell me more about how this medicine is used or for what purpose. I am doing a personal investigation.
Hi Ashley, the tree is Acacia xanthophloea. The bark is used to treat fever and the roots are used to treat malaria.
Have a look at "African Plant Hunter" on TH-cam, he has a video on the medicinal uses.xx
DONT BE FOOLED- I had my car carjacking and stolen there recently and was taken for a 1 hour drive around Cape Town by 3 men armed with knives- all they got was R300 . May look nice but there is organised crime in that area. What about my car you may ask, well SAPS Bellville South impound lot is refusing to release my vehicle, because they have a reputation there for stripping or selling stolen vehicles.Do not allow SAPS to take your vehicle under any circumstance. Tourisst avoid this area.
Sorry to hear.
Just loved it...well done guys

Thanks Dion and Kim for interviewing a "Michelin Star" chef in my opinion 🙏🏽. People over the world uses Cass's recipes. Mr Jowa Abrahams was my "sir' as we would call teachers/educators in the 70's at Athlone High Senior Secondary.(Science and PT). Mrs Cass was displaying her culinary skills way back then.. Jowa's brother Sugary also had unique culinary skills. Mr Jowa Abrahams is a senior citizen today , but back in the day he was a briiliant rugby player and member of Primrose Cricket club. . A top team in the premier league after my team Victoria Cricket Club, (SACOS teams ) 😁. (my late father in-law Ian, was honored as Life president status). Hence we had a sweet/bitter taste on the sports field.. God bless the beautiful souls of Mrs Cass Abrahams and sir Jowa Abrahams 🙏🏽👊🏽
