In March of 2024, our 2023-24 PiAf Fellows, alumni coordinators, and staff embarked on our annual Fellows' Leadership Retreat in Kigali, Rwanda. During the retreat, our Fellows visited the African Leadership University campus in Kigali, Rwanda, where they connected with current students and take a tour of the beautiful facilities. Fellows also heard from the Nyamirambo Women’s Center (NWC)'s founder Marie Umugeni, who shared the organization's mission to provide free education and vocational training to women in the Nyamirambo neighborhood. Later, Fellows learned how to make traditional Rwandan food and did a walking tour of the Nyamirambo neighborhood. Fellows also had the opportunity to attend a career panel with professionals working on the continent, as well attend a networking event organized by PiAf.
One of the most impactful parts of the retreat was our visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where we heard from senior memorial guide Serge Rwigamba speak about the peacebuilding, reconciliation, and education efforts that Rwanda has undertaken in the 30 years since the genocide.
