It's the crew's annual Victoria Day long-weekend trip....and they gave me the opportunity to be the trip organizer. Let's say I made everyone pay for it. LOL The longest route to date. 4 days. 3 nights. 46km from Rain to Misty and back. Over 11km of portages, in back-to-back 7-portage-days that made sure my career as trip organizer as short and sweet. One more canoe trip before this place becomes a winter-wonderland... This time, a solo two-night adventure to Algonquin's southernmost access point - Kingscote Lake. My canoe only weighs 22lbs... but I find single carrying REALLY DIFFICULT! It's not so much the weight but the fact that the canoe tends to put downward pressure on the pack, causing enough stress on the shoulders that anything over a couple 100m is too hard. Whats your secret? Or do you feel the same discomfort and just grin and bear it?

    • @danilointhewoods
      @danilointhewoods 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      22lbs?! I've been dreaming about a Swift 13-footer that only weighs 26lbs, and I thought that was pretty good...22lbs is amazing!! There's definitely some grinding involved with my approach. It's not light, but the thought of doing the hike 3 times doesn't sit well with me. I've trimmed out the luxuries to get my pack weight down. I'm at 13kgs which is not considered "ultralight" by the internet standards, but I'm good with that...But what REALLY HELPS is that I don't let the seat of the canoe rest on top of the pack while I'm carrying it, exactly to avoid the canoe putting that downward pressure on it. There's some discomfort because the yoke is resting on top of the shoulder straps of the pack, but it doesn't feel like I'm being pulled backwards. For me works well, because of the shape and size of my drybag, but might be tough to accomplish if you're using those hiking backpacks that are narrower and come up higher behind the neck...

    Great one man, you're an animal single carrying what I roughly calculated as 90-100lbs - (Esquif 47lbs with paddles mounts lines etc - Dry bag kit 30-35lbs - food barrel 10-12lbs and electronics 5-6lbs) I was in the central park (Canoe/Burnt/Sunbeam/TomTomp) the 23-28th I can see by your moon shots you were up there later that week as well. Yupp all the leaves were gone but it was mild for being so close to Nov. Re the 1300/1470 port from BigRock to Kingscote, the park sign is measuring the distance from BigRock to the fork (that goes up to Lower Minnow lk) You then ad the distance of 170 from the fork to Kingscote to get the total 1470. I like seeing your Garmin watch altitude charts, seeing the inclines and declines. Cheers man and its only two months till spring!

    • @danilointhewoods
      @danilointhewoods 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha - one of these days I should weigh everything to get an accurate reading, but your calculation is on probably on the spot. I figured that was the case regarding the portage, but still doesn’t answer the question…why don’t they fix it?! Even better…the park could introduce an initiative to give away free nights in exchange for portage sign maintenance! I’d go… 😁

    A week ago I took the same road up to the Algonquin sign. Turned around there😢. Can we go on further or need to get a permit first?

    • @danilointhewoods
      @danilointhewoods 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need a permit for park use, so if you’re just joy-riding to the access point, to turn around and head out, I suppose you don’t need a permit. But if you’re planning to park and go for a paddle or hike (Rain Lake is also an access point to the Western Uplands trail), that’s when the permit kicks in. My interpretation…better check with the park office to be sure.

    Congrats on the new canoe! Keep in mind bag position is important for travelling in wind. Not a big deal in calm conditions but if you’re going into the wind you want more weight in the front and with a tail wind more weight in the back.

    Hi Danilo, boy did I enjoy this video! I just came back today from off-roading with my Jeep & camping but you've done what I want to do, perhaps next year: purchase a canoe, mount in on my Jeep & head up to Algonquin on a solo portage camping trip! I smiled when you did because I know I would feel the same as you! I'm so happy to see how happy you were! Wishing you many more happy experiences with your "game changer" canoe. Wish me luck 😊

    I find it astounding how parallel my adventures have been to yours - I've done 2 of your previous trips already (one before you did yours, and the other I was inspired by your video to go do the serpentine loop at KHPP), and I was literally mapping out a route starting from Canoe Lake just last week, and here you are already out there and loving it! :) Not only that, I started with a kayak as well and just last week put my deposit down for a custom built Swift Cruiser 15.8. By the way, how much does your Esquif weigh? Looks like you were able to handle it portaging without an issue, so it must be light enough. Thanks again for sharing your adventure!

    • @danilointhewoods
      @danilointhewoods ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s awesome!! I had a look at the Swift pack boats as well, but had to start smaller from a budget perspective. The Esquif I got is 40lbs. It’s not the lightest, but I’m able to single-carry the boat and gear without any issues. I’ve come up with a fairly minimalist setup as far as gear goes, so that helps. Where are you off to next?!…I’m heading to Algonquin Rain Lake!

    • @northern_wilderness_adventurer
      @northern_wilderness_adventurer ปีที่แล้ว

      40 lbs is a great weight, I'd be happy with that as well. I'm quite intrigued by your minimalist gear (your satchel and how you're able to hang it up for access is just aces!) - maybe one day you can to a full gear breakdown of all your items! My trips are all done for the year, but next year I have 2 routes I'll be doing for sure - a loop starting at Smoke Lake going south, and a slight variation of the Donald Lake Loop up in Temagami. Can't wait to see your adventure to Rain Lake now! :)
