As an artist and philosopher I've been a film director, a writer, a composer of music, and the co-creator of the Dramatica Theory. This channel is where I present the results of my work, divided into three sections - My Professional Life, My Creative Life, and My Personal Life. I post these videos for no reason other than that they might provide a smile or an occasional insight, for if they do, then my efforts as an artist/philosopher have contributed something worthwhile, however small it might be, to help lift of the world just a bit.
Anthem | A song about youthful enthusiasm
Sometimes I like to take one of the themes I wrote and recorded decades ago and produce it in a style I never intended. Really wakes up the creative spirit. This one's music for a teenage anthem, and here's a link to my demo which served as it's inspiration:

Just a pleasant chord progression and some pickin' I wrote back in the 1970s. Reminds me of walks I've taken down country roads. Here's a link to my original demo recording: th-cam.com/video/892qFJmPcF4/w-d-xo.html
I Love You (Disturbed Version) | A song about creepy love
มุมมอง 1774 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
A slightly unnerving love song. I wrote this one back in the 1970s as an experiment to see if I could create a disturbing love song. Yes I could. Here's a link to my original demo from half a century ago: th-cam.com/video/Fwsc45zboJk/w-d-xo.html
One Last Smile | A song about lost love
มุมมอง 1437 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
When I original wrote this in the 1970s, I wanted to create something in the style of John Denver, which is why I composed it with these chords and melody line, which are reminiscent of some of his songs. When I revisited it recently to produce a complete version, I discovered I'd only written one verse of the lyrics, so the first order of business was to develop another few verses to build an ...

This is a real foot-stomper of an instrumental that reminds me of the energy of folks in the city who are growing their own food in a designated patch of ground right in the middle of it all. Here's a link to my original demo recording from the 1970s: th-cam.com/video/fnp663QhvM8/w-d-xo.html
Split Personality - A song with two sides
มุมมอง 307 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
As you may know, now that I'm retired, I've been going through all my old demo recordings all the way back to 1969. Split Personality was one of these that I made in the 1970s. But, the demo was just the basic chords and melody line and one verse - not much at all. I was going to just pass it by and move on to the next but Teresa showed me a video yesterday about a theory that young composers a...
Our Shot At The Moon - A song of hope
มุมมอง 1217 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I've never been able to get a good produced version of this song I wrote in the 1970s. I've tried lots of different styles, and it doesn't help that I keep tweaking the lyrics either. But of all the versions, though this may not be the best, it is at least the closest to what I'm trying to achieve with this piece. To get an idea of where I'm coming from , here's a link to the original demo I re...
I Hate You For Making Me Love You - A song about backlash
มุมมอง 1917 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I write this one around the age of 20 in the mid-1970s. At the time, I was just trying my hand at something bluesy and recorded in my Composer's Sketchbook. This week, I finally produced this song in several different styles, this one being classic Motown. To see where it started, here's a link to my original demo recording: th-cam.com/video/KVD6pgdQNsc/w-d-xo.html
Floating Free (Primal Version) - A song about catching the vibe
มุมมอง 129 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I don't usually post another orchestration or arrangement of a composition right on the heels of the initial release, but I liked this other version so much, I couldn't help myself. As before, the chord and melody progression reminds me of the 4 Non Blondes song, "What's Up?" which was released in 1993, but I wrote this instrumental piece back in the early 1970s and just happened to create the ...
Floating Free - A for spacing out
มุมมอง 259 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This is a spacey, undulating instrumental that has a chord progression sounding a lot like "What's Up?" from the group 4 Non Blondes in 1993, though I wrote this one in the early 1970s. Here's a link to my original demo recording from half a century ago: th-cam.com/video/LLG4-fCGvA0/w-d-xo.html
The Dismal Gate - A song about reuniting
มุมมอง 3912 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This is the first of many versions of this song I've produced, based on my original demo recording from half a century ago. Musically, it's not really worth all those versions, but for some reason I kept tweaking the lyrics and the style. Here's a link to my original demo from the 1970s: th-cam.com/video/s6WBAYvKOKY/w-d-xo.html
Rats on Springs - A about living in the moment
มุมมอง 7814 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
When I wrote this one half a century ago, I wasn't thinking about rats, but may have been thinking about springs. I had recently recorded a demo called "Slinky Down The Stairs" and this one wasn't long after that. It wasn't until I decided to publish all my old recordings a few years ago that I needed to come up with names, and in listening to this one, I could picture these rats in a sewer hav...

Dispassionate Tears - A song of numb emotions
มุมมอง 914 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
As a teenager, I often wrote sad music, though I was quite happy in my family. Just exploring the human condition, I imagine. Here's a link to my original demo of this piece from 50 years ago: th-cam.com/video/skYCTL8IDnE/w-d-xo.html

I like writing music with intentional disharmony that somehow not only works, but is necessary to the musical progression of the piece. This is another case in point. Here's a link to my original 1970s demo recording the led to this updated version: th-cam.com/video/QL13IzIoazI/w-d-xo.html

I am the first to comment This is nice. calming!
🧐
I'm actually digging the original more. Maybe because it's dripping 80s electronic vibes.
I know what you mean. I always like the raw unrelenting sound of the original. It was designed so that the chords and vocal harmonies came together as kind of a musical scream - something that was lost in the new version I produced. But, they're both still around, so take you pick! :)

Stop posting ai slop
Stop replying with human slop. Aw, did I offend your sensibilities because I included AI in my creative process? This concept was mine, the name of the character is mine, the Frank insights are written by me. I'm not an artist, so I used AI to realize my vision and then put it into motion. Go somewhere else to dump your ill tidings, and stop disparaging my art.
Certain things shouldn’t have a right to exist.
Uh, is that a positive or negative comment? If it's positive, uh, thanks! If it's negative, then stop disparaging my art.

Great lyrics.
I like it a lot.
What in the unholy AI garbage
LOL! I've always been a fan of Hieronymus Bosch - the surrealist 15th century painter. When I decided to create a musical version of my poem of many years ago, I thought that AI's ability to create surreal visualization of concepts would be perfect to illustrate my words. So, working with one AI system, I created still images based on my instructions to create a single image to illustrate the key concepts and moods expressed in each individual verse. Then I imported those images into another AI system to put them in motion. Though AI is still advancing in capability almost daily, I am rather pleased with the result, and especially that I can finally see before the ideas I've only previously been able to watch in my mind's eye.
@@MelanieAnnePhillips An artist takes pride in their work, capitulating that effort to the machinations of artificial design is not a worthy or desirous discipline as it removes the artist from their work. One single image painted and expressed by your own hand would have served better to realize your imagination.
@@UncontainablePickle-_420 Sorry - Can't paint. No artistic talent. I'm great at lyrics, though! I also use drawing programs and photoshop-like programs to make up for my lack of ability in that area and still realize what I'm seeing in my mind's eye. AI is a tool. Don't be afraid of it. Just because we invented photography doesn't mean people have stopped painting - it just allowed those who can't paint to still make pictures of the world.

I don't think I'd ever heard of an "anti-biography" until I saw this video in my TH-cam notifications feed. What I find potentially intriguing is that, by not focusing on yourself, and just focusing on what your most prized posessions and memories mean to you, an insightful reader can come away knowing a lot about you, even if you don't focus primarily on yourself. It's almost like that saying, "Show me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are."
Thanks for your thoughts. You have tuned in exactly to the concept. Now, how well I can fulfill the concept or whether this particular work will do no more than point the way for others - well that remains to be seen as the stories are uploaded over time. :)
A story is not an argument.
Not in the sense of people yelling at each other, but in the sense that underneath all the passion, the structure of the underlying story is a message - a logic argument that one way of behaving is a better choice than another.
@@MelanieAnnePhillips The structure of a story might be reducible to a logical argument, but that doesn't mean that a story is a logical argument. Great stories transcend logical interpretations, and interpretations in general.
@@kessler2797I couldn't agree more. That's what my 113 part series is all about - separating structure from the passion to better understand the logic of it - to see how structure works and why. And then, armed with that understanding in the back of you mind, go forth and write with passion. Once you understand structure, it guides you from the background. Never let structure be your master any more than logic should rule our emotions in real life. But if stories, or if people, are emotion only with no sense of reason, then they make no sense. It can still be a fun ride, but other than the experience there is no take-away, no meaning. Structure is what builds that meaning, adding strength and power to passion so that it affects both the heart and the mind.
This is unsettling.
I am sad that you are unsettled.
Digging it and love the title! I'm a sucker for Beatlesque songs. What year was this recorded?
Glad you like it! It was written and recorded in 1986 using a CZ-101 Casio synthesizer and a TEAC 3340 SX 4-track reel to reel deck. I added the drum track just this year (first time playing drums - I got a tabletop electric drum pad kit for Christmas).
The song is pretty good. Sounds like 1970, which i like. I'm one of those few people that still listen to the album Wild Life. The video portion, reminds me of times I enjoyed nearly 40 years ago.
I'm afraid I'm a child of long ago - almost all my work was recorded as demos (about 500 songs, melodies, riffs, and hooks, but I've only ever produced a few properly. It's great to hear that you appreciate that heady age too. :)
@@MelanieAnnePhillips I'm afraid that I'm coming up 60 really, really quick. Retirement or a facelift and work forever 🤣
@@jdwyer4851 71 this year, and finally devoting all my time to my artistic endeavors that have lain fallow.

I’m wondering what you would have thought at the time if someone approached you and described Dramatica.
Good question. Well, you know that it was right after The Strangeness and partly because of it that we began work on story theory. We wanted to write another script together, Chris and I, but we didn't want to run into the same problems we had on The Strangeness. So, we started trying to figure out how stories worked so we could write them better. After several months, however, we got stuck. And Chris said he felt we just didn't have enough life experience to understand it yet and we should put it aside until we did. Wise man. So, we put it aside and went on to write that second script, which was never produced. Then, about ten years later, he called me up and said, You know that old theory of ours about how stories work?" I said, "Yeah." He said, "It's time." Next day we met for breakfast at the Coral Cafe in Burbank to talk about it and never looked back. So, bottom line - I think we were already primed for Dramatica by our experiences on the strangeness and our innate desire to understand the process.
I first heard this song over 20 years ago and was immediately impressed! Thank you so much for uploading this!
Thank you! Always nice to hear.
