The Midlands Fly Fisherman
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 31 มี.ค. 2022
Fly fishing since I was 6. I love to fish, I have 2 sons and we fish a lot, we are based in the Midlands and have access to so many of the top fisheries in close proximity.
My goal with this channel is to document the trips with my sons to all the places we visit.
Sharing tips and fishing adventures from a non professional fly fisherman while dealing with 2 young and very active young boys learning to fly fish. I'm new to the filming, so any tips and hints are always welcome, please leave comments and share what and where is good.
If i can help anyone learning the sport with what I know then that will make me a happy.

#28 ELLERDINE // WINTER // Fly Fishing Trout - all species - at the best UK Stillwater 18.01.25
On this trip the entire family came along which is really lovely and great but what it does mean is I get to fish last. Setting up the rods, untangling and changing flies all get done in reverse order. As you will see it was testing but really fun and I managed my first #tigertrout , Ethan managed to get his first #spartictrout. some great memories made, good to see my wife and youngest persevering, next time they will hook and land their own.
Ellerdine is one of the best UK still water lakes, with 4 lakes and a beginners pool there is plenty of choice and unique spots demanding a different approach. There are plenty of fish choices, each time you get a pull it could be a rainbow, a brown, a tiger or a spartic, other fresh water species have also been hooked.
An amazing place and always such amazing welcomeness by the guys who run the place, as alwasy the food and the club house are amazing.
Hope you enjoy the video, my first of 2025.

Brad and Jo hosted the 2024 Fur n Feather in memory of Nigel Cheetam, a cold day, tough conditions but a lovely day a float. Wrong choice to fish the boat, the bank anglers did the best while fishing close in.

Third visit in 6 weeks and it was another fun trip, no fish to the net but dropped 2 and had many pulls, takes and follows, it just didn't stick this time. Weather was a bit funny, looked great on paper, conditions were amazing but something was off and the fish were not on. Good trip again, next up Elinor for the Fur and Feather on the 17/11/24 so look out for the next video of that.

When you watch the edit you will see how many pulls, follows, takes and dropped fish, the fish are on the feed and they are close in on the North shore along all the points. No shrimp or hares ear this time - that's for the next trip.

First visit to Grafham, in search of fry feeders and shrimpers...tried the methods but ended up getting most on snakes using the rolly polly. Slow start but then a fast and action packed afternoon with fish in the net but also (at 15 min mark) propped line, snapped my rod - TWICE, propped the drogue (managed to rescue that) and had a great time on an adventure I will not forget. If you like my ...

I have not been out for many weeks and the last few sessions have not been amazing in terms of fish caught, sorry but its been tough and clearly I have not been able to crack the code on the day. On this day at the lake I only saw 1 rod bend, no one around us managed to get a fish to the boat so conditions clearly tricky and fooling all the boats. Managed just 1 to the net and had a few plucks,...

Late July out on Pitsford with the boys. Its been a very hot week with temps in the mid to high twenties and the water is very warm. Not many fish moving but we decide to have a day out until 3pm. Good to be out on the water and fish the lake in July, every trip I learn something, position, fish behaviour, wind and weather conditions, depth, and so much more. It all adds to the memory bank for ...

A quick one, slow going but mastering new methods on the di 3 with 3 fly washing line set up, 2 boobies with a natural nymph in the middle. Stunning morning arriving just after 6am to set up and take in the lovely early morning have a quiet coffee and taking it all in. ...

Day 2, wonderful scenery but slow on the fishing. I didn't dial in the tactics for the day and just had one of those days. Still great to have a half day with the boys fishing a stunning venue. There are plenty fish and many big fish just not today. I think a trip in the spring would be one for next time in 2025.

We spent a weekend in the Lake District a few weeks ago and fished two lovely lakes that are apart of the WADAA society. www.lakedistrictfishing.co.uk This short video was about Biglands, we didn't get many fish on the day but it has huge potential and we have fished it once before (see the video on my channel, actually my first ever video).

มุมมอง 3K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
As I had such a good evening session last week I thought I would return again before the prolonged warmer weather sets in and warms the lake too much turning the fishing off. Compared to last week it was a very different day, last week was 100% heavy cloud, steady breeze and cooler. This day was bright sunshine, hot and very little wind, it called for a different fly set up. A simple change of ...

Elinor was on fire, fish everywhere, rising top and tailing but also chasing insects and launching from the water chasing rising nymphs and bugs that were lifting off. Best method was to suspend two wet daddies between a popper hopper on point and a booby hopper or booby daddy on the top dropper. Short sharp jerks then slow figure of 8, then repeat and watch the fish chase and explode onto the ...

Great video, what greys net have you got? I've been trying to find out the name of the that net head.
Hi, it’s from Angling active, rubber spoon dual mesh, I got the smaller head as the bigger was out of stock, I should have waited to get the bigger as anything 5lb or bigger is a very tight fit 👍
Why have glasses with you and there sitting on top of your head 😮?
They are there for when you need them or want them, I can’t stand them unless it’s windy to protect my eyes or sunny to prevent the glare. 👍👌 Hope you enjoyed the edit and seeing such a magnificent specimen.
Think your pal has his reel on backwards
Right handed mate 👍 most use the left hand to reel but I grew up with it right handed and learnt that way so did Rinalen. Most folks do left handed but that’s what works for them 👍.
@@themidlandsflyfisherman to be fair your reel is on the correct way for fly fishing, good work.
I always start on top with a dry fly first much more fun only resort to lures if all else fails
Fishing the dries are always great fun, something I want to work on more next year 👍
Really great session. Enjoyed the vid immensely, lovely commentary and recording.
That’s very kind of you and glad you enjoy the vids, fun to make also 👍
Fished it several times with my freinds Mick Nickels and Peter Stuffins. Cracking water.
Agree, one of the best 👍
Beautiful location for a bit of fishing
Stunning, even when I don’t catch it’s a great day out 👍
Wow Good job fishermen!! Is this lake trout or rainbow trout?
Rainbows, Browns and Tiger trout, not many but a few 👍
Great effort on the video - my brother and I drifted past you! it was a tough day My brother lost 3 and I lost 2 but got a belter in - Rainbow of 4lb 4oz - on a snake by the tower - back at the dock it appeared taht everyone had struggled - the fish have to win some days! Keep up the videos but dont treat the camera the way you treated your rod!!!!
Hi Jason, Yes I recall, I do watch every boat to see what retrieve, casts, lines used etc for those little bits of information that can help. Glad to hear you managed one to the net and a good one too, well done. Like I said we really did not see many rods bending like we have in the past, its getting on in the season now and the fishing is getting tougher but the rewards will be bigger for those bigger, wiser and grown on fish. I learn more from my failures than my success, even my last trip yesterday I took 30 minutes to eat lunch, put the rod down and take it all in and enjoy being out and about and sharing a boat with a mate - I still blanked apart from a pike and it was freezing but still good. Tight lines and thanks for the positive comments.
Many..and many more years since I cast an Appetiser Baby Doll or dead drift floating white Muddler for fry feeding back end trout at Grafham in Savages ...it used to be end of September....!! Would be nice to make the long trip down the A1 to try again...and the hope of a fine brownie. Maybe next year....and I will remember to tie some of those shrimp... Simon Artley
Hi Simon, I have a few baby dolls in my box, I must be honest not used them ever but I know what it is and have a few in there. I would say it is definitely worth the trip, to be there, on the water out in the fresh air and just being involved and fishing, catching would be a bonus and even though I do like to catch, I still enjoy being out and about. It can be very frustrating at times but I am learning to enjoy the day for what it is. Tight lines and hope you get out and have a go on the popper fry 😊👍
Great watch , keep them coming buddy 🎣
Thanks and glad you enjoy them ☝️👍
Cut the front hook point off . One will fish much better and secondly will help the fish from getting damaged when there fighting.
Thanks, generally all my snakes are just single hooks, this was all they had in the shop but thanks for advice. They are barbless and the hook came out in the net ☝️👍
Double hooks on Snakes cause unnecessary harm to fish and are very bad form
Barbless and it came out in the net 👍
Feel for you bud ! I thought you were going to launch that rod when it happened.
I was seriously thinking about it mate, head in hands moment for sure, escalated way quicker than I thought it would 😖 at least I got a few nice fish 🎣
We have all done it. Painful but we learn.
I have learnt now, expensive lessons and not to be repeated 😂😂👌
@@themidlandsflyfisherman close calls will happen, but it's key not to panic
I’ve broken a rod and line on the prop in a club match on Rutland years ago. I can empathise and there’s no apologies needed for the swear words. You were more restrained than I was 🤣
That’s crazy, yeah I edited a lot of 🤣🤣🤣
That’s fishing for you we can’t have a red letter day or we would get fed up well I wouldn’t but others might 🐟🎣😂😂
I totally agree, I always try to see the beauty and positives in each of our trips out on the water. Each time there are learnings to be had and kept for the next time. 👍👌
Another great video, you may have only caught one but another day of great memories made fishing with your sons, well done sir.
Thank you very much, for me to fish with my boys is all about sharing a fun day all together. When we are older we will look back at these videos and remember them well. Glad you enjoy the videos 👍😊
Another great video keep up the good work pleasure to watch
Thanks and so glad you enjoy them, next one is of Ghyll head that we fished the day after for a half day 👍👌👌
Last fished bigland 35years ago it was always a hard place as you had to go natural flies no big silly stuff.might pop up later in year
It is such a beautiful fishery, fish everywhere and yes you need to be dialled in with the smaller naturals to entice the takes. Just not my day but still a wonderful day out with the kids and will be back in the Autumn. Always on my list to fish when I am in the Lakes District.
Good video. How do you space out your 4 flies? Since you asked for suggestions, when the takes slowed, perhaps fewer flies. I've recently found the top hat buzzer has done well in a flat calm. Both static cast at rising fish and also sometimes pulling slowly. Look forward to your lake district trip.
Thanks for the tips Mike, I have a bunch of top hats in all the colours and sizes, and you are right, fewer flies, smaller and static should give me a much better chance. My 4 fly set up is around 16-20ft straight 8lb or 6lb fluorocarbon with each spaced around 4ft from the point fly going back up to the actual fly line. Sometimes I use 3 flies and other times, like at Ravensthorpe I used 5 flies on a 3-4ft space to cover all depths when fishing straight line nymphs of buzzers. Hope it helps.
Looks Like you had a good session.
It was indeed, catching fish is better than not catching fish 🤣🤣🤣
