I gave up with this video within a couple of minutes due to the unnecessary background "music". The constant thumping does not help with the communicating the message being so distracting.
Interesting take on degrees- I'm currently trying to decide whether I need one to get into the field - given your "no-one cares" attitude, does this mean you have employment opportunities for people without a degree? There seems to be precious few apprecnticeships in conservation careers.

Yep. Pay is woeful. An example of this is many local councils paying around £30k a year for a tree officer. Years of graft and experience on top to earn that little is not reasonable in my opinion. 👍
Fascinating - how do people become qualified to do this - do they have a special training and license?
You can start with no training from the start of the season. Arbtech make the info accessible on their website which made me believe in being able to apply with a chance of being accepted. You can also volunteer with your local bat group to start. I'm about to start doing it all, I hope -- license is acquired from 1-3 seasons of surveying
I'm not a company, but stepping into the Arb world 6 years ago when I retrained as a consultant, now 48yrs old, I'm am continually stumped (!?) at the woefully low wages that clearly, highly skilled youngsters, and newbies are expected to take. Good work Rob, and good luck with it.
Based on my research so far, it seems that beginner ecologists conduct a very large amount of bat surveys, especially if they are employed seasonally. How long would you say it takes for someone in that position to start undertaking a more diverse array of surveys? GCN, phase 1 habitat, reptiles, badgers, water vole, etc.
Thanks for this video. As an older Zoology student and someone who's looking to move into ecological consulting, this provided so much valuable information.
