I like to think that it's a underground swamp that burst into a volcanic lava soaken area due to the Witch of Izalith creating the demon flame, it does make sense lore-wise. Shame that one of the main bosses and area were so rushed that it ruined it's whole concept

I never did question the idea of lava-rsesistant branches, once I saw the Bed of Chaos I figured that's part of the 'chaos' and symbolizes how it takes root into things to change them into a grotesque shape, like the sunlight maggots and the regular maggots

Huh! This makes so much more sense! Instead of being burned by lava, you would just be poisoned, which is par for the course with Souls games. "Would Lost Izalith have been better if it was a swamp?" Maybe not better, but it definitely would have made more sense. Then, again, there's the whole "witches of chaos unleashing fire" thing... Ah, who knows?
