I came as a youngster of twelve from Germany to the "land of the free and home of the brave" on August 6, 1955. I'm really lucky to be alive because in September of 1948 as the youngest of five children we made it into freedom from the communist zone of Germany to Bavaria. The border guards had orders to shoot to kill. Not so lucky in the brutal winter of 1945. My father was prisoner of war in France. Mother, four sisters and I were stopped at the banks of the Oder river. We were part of the 14 million refugees trying to reach the West. Millions never made it. But the Lord was good us, sent a guardian angel angel who saved my life at least nine times. I was born on February, 1943, the year the Battle of Stalingrad was lost. Now, four score and one year later, my life has come full circle. I graduated from Kansas State in 1965. Those were the happiest years to this very day in America. Football was a painful experience back then. Much more fun at Ahearn Field House Now life has come full circle for me. I'm a historian, novelist, and poet. The Japanese classical Haiku consist of three verses: five syllables in the first, seven in the second, and three in the third. Homage to a good human being. Larger than life and super talent, Avery Johnson, a.k.a. Sunshine Young, wise, and handsome. God's gift to humanity. May God keep thee safe! October 12, 2024 A magical night! I was lucky enough to get a signed football by Mr. Lattner and the rest of the 1953 Notre Dame National Champions at one of their 5 year reunions. I attended with my grandfather Paul Robst who was also part of the team.
