CFS HTS Magnets Power UW-Madison’s WHAM Fusion Device to Hit First Plasma
Have you ever seen a mirror fusion device create plasma? University of Wisconsin - Madison hit first plasma in their WHAM device last week with the help of our high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets and our CEO Bob Mumgaard was there to see it happen.
How does it work?
Hydrogen atoms are heated to millions of degrees to become plasma, a state of matter where the electrons and nucleus in each atom separate.
The negatively charged electrons and positively charged nuclei in the plasma move along the path of the magnetic field. This keeps the plasma hot by making sure it doesn’t touch the colder walls of the fusion device.
Mirrors are similar to tokamaks (like CFS is building) in some ways (both use magnets), but in mirrors the plasma particles bounce back and forth between the big magnets at the ends of the machine while in tokamaks they go all the way around the circle of the donut.
You can watch the moment WHAM hits first plasma in the video.

thank you, economy will rise by using jet plasma machine and compressed gas(Air) in isolated structure in water pool with more than 80 % efficiency , it transfers gas temperature from engine to water, New energy from sea will change world soon, there are other source of energy that with international cooperation in coastline we can reduce effect of global warming, sea is huge source of energy, further more we can prevent these phenomena like cyclone and flood and wildfire by using this hot seasonal atmospheric condition, recent years in summer, geothermal energy happens in surface of coastline, there are many countries in coastline with seasonal hot weather and water condition in comparison with middle Ocean more than 12 degrees , in sum-up, by using this energy not only is economical but also reduce global warming in countries like Japan, China, India, Mediterranean countries, Iran, Brazil, Mexico, Us, Canada, (Africa and Arabian countries....) . I invented new method base on air pressure rules and quantum physics ionization sea water minerals in strong dynamic magnet bases on paramagnetic and diamagnetic particles and electrical field and electric chemical reactions (K+, Mg++, Na+, H+, H++, li+, H2, ...) +( O2, N2, ...) into up level by vacuum pump from storage into combustion chambers as major part of fuel (more than 50%) for producing electricity and fresh water and fertilizer. this machine produces 150Megwatt-hour/hour and 20000M3/DAY and fertilizer. 7 methods zero pollution for reducing global warming I mentioned in my profile. (G20 countries can solve these phenomena)

That includes the total averaged energy fed into the facility during its operations. The parameter of that value can easily be over 100 times greater than the energy fed into the plasma to heat it. The heating value is used to formulate Q-plasma. Q-total is typically left out of presentations. Another issue, that very few people are aware of, is that both SPARC and ARC are expected to operate in brief pulses when operating at near full DT fusion power levels. The published parameters only apply to the brief on periods, not an average, that includes the lengthy recovery time. Thank you for this tour. It is clear that numerous details were left out which I find is very common with most nuclear fusion energy experimental facilities. It would have been advantageous to have also heard someone give a critical assessment. I'm sure that most of the viewers only are interested in hearing one side of the story. You used the word fusion in referring to the future operation of SPARC. You should have provided more information on supplying it with the fuel component, radioactive tritium. Currently, it's commercial purchase value is around $30,000/gram. You also made no mention of including a lithium blanket, or creating your own source of tritium. The past presentations, regarding SPARC, stated that the high-temperature superconducting magnets would be key to it achieving useful levels of fusion energy. Many of the viewers assumed that meant the magnets didn't need to be cooled down to cryogenic temperatures to operate. Are we to assume that your design will solve all the plasma instability issues that so many other MCF facility continue to struggle with? How Does SPARC plan to deal with the chamber materials that become contaminated with the radioactive tritium, or components that become radioactive due to irradiation from fusion energy neutrons? When operating at full fusion power levels are the superconducting magnets shielded from being irradiated by the fusion energy neutrons? SPARC is designed to run in a pulsed mode as are all other tokamak type projects when operating at full DT fusion energy mode. SPARC's on time is expected to be 10 seconds then. The stated operational parameters are for the on-time, not for the lengthy rest periods after each pulsed on-time. The press, public and investors deserve to hear the average of the operational parameters over an at least 24 hour period. I'm posing these questions and examples since most fans wouldn't dream of presenting such questions for a project that they have come to love.

It might seem you are getting too technical about your questions but sadly, without wanting to be seen as pessimist, these points you raised are the reason this particular setup might never achieve baseload production. When the process becomes too complicated, keeping it going becomes extremely difficult and prohibitive in terms of cost. I wish CFS success though. For me, I am almost convinced we can get fusion without these complexities and I am determined to do so.

@@henryeze7074 - A great many people have placed their hopes on this technology becoming our savior. We are immersed in a society that encourages us all to express optimism and to avoid pessimistic assessments. In order for a technology to thrive in the marketplace all the downsides should be evaluated. Many of the people who work in the nuclear fusion energy field are intensely focused on their own specialty. Very few have an ability to understand the extreme complexity of the entire enterprise so that they can perform a global assessment of the chances that their approach is superior to all the other approaches. I personally believe that such projects should be very transparent with all the engineering parameters and not hide behind the arcane language employed by those who have major stakes in wooing the public and investors to keep the funds flowing into the project. This is the reason I pose such technical questions.

Let’s Consider the following options and the alternative. Cold Fusion (LENR) - Unproven hypothesized type of nuclear reaction that creates nuclear fusion at room temperature by producing more energy than the amount of input energy can be produced from its altered state. Tokamak Nuclear Fusion Reactor (ITER) - Requires a temperature of 150 million degrees Celsius to create nuclear fusion. Reportedly the record to date but having to use more input energy than produced is 69 megajoules of fusion energy for five seconds using 0.2 milligrams of fuel. (1 megajoule is equal to 0.00027 megawatt-hours) (The reported development cost for the ITER is $150 billion.) The alternative. Solar Hydrogen Energy Recovery Gas Turbine. 301Kwh (equal to 46/6.6Kw home solar installations) of solar energy collected from the sun’s nuclear fusion at atmospheric temperature is sufficient for electrolysis obtained from 1/3 of the water volume of an Olympic swimming pool that is recycled by steam reforming to produce 24 hours of Hydrogen gas contained within a 14 cubic meter space compressed between 350-700 bar to enable the start-up sequence of a hydrogen Gas turbine that in turn enables the synchronizing of its Variable Frequency Generator to maintain equilibrium of compressed hydrogen gas to continually fuel the turbine. Oxygen produced from the electrolyzing process is used as a fuel saving precooled engine catalyst to bring online the turbines energy recovery system and sustain a variably regulated base load power supply to service grid energy demand. The operational variability of the turbine manages both grid inertia, and mis matched frequency while generating a capacity energy range between 86 - 330Mw with optional co-generated steam capacity up to 700Mw of electrical energy on a 24/7/365-day basis. The power generating turbine has three operational parts, 3m in diameter 5.5m long and weighs 6 tons. Installation cost $36.5 -49.5 million, requires an operational footprint area the size of a football field, noise level is 60dbl at 60m, incorporates direct air capture of CO2 at 1,400 Kg/sec and includes a 14-year maintenance free, end of life decommissioning or optional refurbishment program. Sixty-five carbon and pollution free, shovel ready, off the shelf technology that combines solar nuclear fusion with modern aerospace propulsion and existing nuclear and coal fired steam technology to generate a total of 21,450 Mw can be retrofitting to any of the 120 Hydro-electric schemes placed at grid conversion points would provide Australia's 26 million population its entire energy needs covering a combined operational area of 33 hectares for a 2023 total cost between $2.4-3.3 billion. Construction period is 3 to 5 years, meet net zero energy target twenty years earlier and makes wind and solar farms including hydro, gas and nuclear energy production redundant.

Fusion huh....really.... at what temp and frequency did it reach so called fusion...and the harmonic code...max TeV1.11 Gw...divided by pulse velocity...with an increase in mass at 2.22.1 MwV... MG constant to a variable of 2.113.22y= 2.113

Expensive garbage for funding...I could build it smaller and cheaper with more output in a scale model than that entire set up....pulse static magnetic engine/generator...scaled up even more...what amazes me is you guys think thos is amazing...it is I guess...have me out I live 30 minutes away...I could show u the numbers schematics and programming...so much more to accomplish....do ur donors know people luke me exist...no because everyone I try to come out you guys ignore me...not because my works aren't valid because I haven't even glanced.... for all u donors contact me ...if u want to see a real return for ur donation/investment....and it just needs to be put together...

Well, you had me until the politicians started speaking especially Granholm. She’s got all of her money invested in clean energy and she doesn’t care where it comes from just as long as she makes her money I know I live in Michigan. She absolutely ruined this state. We lost over 700,000 manufacturing jobs here because of her ignorance and, complete buffoonery

CFS iS fascinating startup/company, when i heared of it for the first time about three years ago, i wanted so bad to work for them in something that match my skills , i actually applied to work with them when they were hiring teams for the new plant in devens mass if im not mistaken, but no luck, it wasn't about my skills but it was more about my work history as a new comer to the us i kept changing from job to another.. If there's an opportunity in the future, I'm determined to be a part of the incredible team working in making the science fiction reality. they're doing something truly historic, and I know I can contribute my skills and hard work to make it happen.

Wow! I’m surprised to hear that site selection for ARC is already being worked on! I’ve been following CFS for 5 years now and I’m such a believer in your work! I know even once achieved, fusion power will be expensive, but it seems like such a powerful next step in humanity’s evolution. Renewables are critical for meeting the energy needs of today and tomorrow, but with functional fusion power we can find new and exciting things to do with large amounts of carbon free electricity!

All proponents of nuclear energy projects are in line with the vast majority of the Earth's 8.0+ billion people who continue to assume that we have at least 20 years left to turn this 'Titanic' around with their favorite technology. The've become masterful in excluding the following warnings from their consciousness. I urge readers to search for the following two article titles. IPCC report: ‘now or never’ if world is to stave off climate disaster (TheGuardian) UN chief: World has less than 2 years to avoid 'runaway climate change' (TheHill) * This statement was made 5.6 years ago.

So cool. 2060, or a little sooner, we can start slowly scaling down coal and fossil fuels. By 2130 we can start attempting to make changes to clean up the environment. Wow wow wow. (none of you made offspring, right?)
