Infant and Maternal Outcomes During the COVID 19 Pandemic
Study explores infant and maternal outcomes during COVID-19 pandemic
In one of the largest and longest follow-up studies of physical development and healthcare utilization of infants born to patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers from Yeshiva University, Katz School of Science and Health, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, including hashtag#KatzSchool alum Moshe Gordon, investigated the physical development, incidence of common pediatric illnesses, and healthcare utilization in the first two years of life of infants born to patients with and without SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy.
"We have some good news and some bad news. We didn’t find there to be many differences between the COVID-positive and COVID-negative moms; their babies turned out pretty much the same. But interestingly, the moms who gave birth before the pandemic, their babies did better than the babies born during the pandemic. We think this may have to do with social aspects of the pandemic - people had less access to care, maybe they weren’t coming in for visits as often. As a medical community, we need to provide some kind of a safety net to protect this population." - Moshe Gordon, M.A. in Physics ’24 and current MD student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Collaborators included Anna Eligulashvili, B.S., Sheri Nemerofsky, MD, Thomas Havranek, MD, Peter S. Bernstein, MD, MPH, Judy Y., Wei Hou, Ph.D., and Tim Q. Duong, Ph.D. Fredy Zypman, Ph.D., Yeshiva University physics chair, provided oversight.
Moshe presented his findings at the 2024 Katz School of Science and Health Symposium on Science, Technology and Health. Explore the full proceedings, posters, photos, and videos from the Symposium: vist.ly/3mk9shc
