Let’s get started! Preparation is key, to successfully painted furniture pieces. It’s never the most fun, but so important!
Choosing furniture to paint
มุมมอง 5310 หลายเดือนก่อน
Whether you’re painting a furniture piece for your home, or to sell, here’s what I look for, when choosing a project.
Applying a paint “wash”
มุมมอง 4510 หลายเดือนก่อน
A paint wash is simply a diluted paint application. It’s great for stained surfaces. The only thing you need to do is clean the surface and then sand, with a medium grit sanding pad. The varnish needs to be removed, so that the wood will absorb the paint wash. In this case, I used an electric rotary sander. Dust off any sanding dust and you’re ready to paint!
Prepping and painting.

Rolling paint onto your furniture piece is just an option. Since this dresser had large flat areas that needed to be painted, I opted for the Staalmeester roller cover. Before rolling paint onto your piece, you need to cut into the hard to reach areas, with a paint brush. Here we go!
Applying Fusion Mineral Paint
มุมมอง 22610 หลายเดือนก่อน
Using a roller, you can save time painting and reduce brush strokes. You’ll need the (re-usable) Staalmeester roller cover, a size-appropriate handle and small paint pan. The most important tip for rolling paint, is to “off-load” as much paint out of the roller cover as possible. This will reduce texture, left by the roller cover. First, cut into the hard to reach areas, with a good fine-bristl...
Applying Tough Coat poly acrylic
มุมมอง 27110 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the last step! Fusion Mineral Paint has a built-in moisture barrier, but for extra “insurance”, it pays to apply Tough Coat to your painted piece. On table tops, that get the most traffic, it’s wise to apply several coats, drying at least an hour, in between. To avoid a cloudy finish, especially on dark paint colors, be sure to apply thin coats.

Would like to have seen a shot of the finished product. Thanks for the video.
Yay! No trendy music- just a clear explanation. Thank you.
Thank you so much explained everything l wanted to know❤
Hi Barbara. I would like to add the Homestead and Cranberry as you did to the cabinets in my whole kitchen. Do I put the colours on the bare sanded cabinet or on top of the midnight Blue? Thank you so much!
Hi! No need to sand. Cleaning is most important. I painted with midnight blue, the dry brushed with other colors, once dry. Last think you do is stain and finishing oil. Sadly, you’re supposed to wait 7 days before applying SFZo, to let all the moisture dissipate first. Hope this helps!
Can this be applied over other chalk paint brands? Also wondering if this can go over a transfer instead of a top coat ?
Good morning Barbara. I messed up with the wipe on wipe off application late last night. The finish is streaked and sticky 😱 how can I fix this mess?
It’s hard to answer, without knowing more, but the stain and finishing oil needs to be wiped on and wiped off immediately after application over fusion mineral paint. I also apply the oil in circular motions to avoid streakiness. i’m not 100% sure, but you could do one of two things. You could apply a second coat of the stain and finishing oil and try and reactivate the product in a circular motion, to remove the streaks and give yourself a more uniform finish. The other option is to take some mineral spirits, a solvent,And try to call wipe off the product applied last night.
Thank you Barbara. I wish I had watched the video first 😬I think I’ll first try reactivating if I’m not happy with it I’ll use the solvent. How long does it take to cure?
Absolutely Stunning ! Great video ty💕
Oh I like that cranberry hue over the blue paint. The cranberry color was a stain??
I need your help I think I might have put my clear SFO on my midnight blue , after watching your video I know I didn’t take enough off when I pulled it back what can I do now? UGH please help
Hi ... So how did you prep the cabinet? I have kitchen cupboards to do. Ash possibly for island and little lamb maybe for the main wall of. Right now I have orange oak nearly 20 yrs old and they really need an update!
Prep is the most important step, when painting cabinets. Use our TSP alternative product, which doesn't require rinsing or, if they're really mucky, Krud Kutter, which is pretty toxic...requires windows open and a clear water rinse. 😬 The Stain and Finishing Oil isn't required. But it works great on dark colors, like Ash. If you seal with Fusion's Tough Coat, which is a water based poly acrylic, use super thin coats, to avoid a cloudy affect, once dry. Good luck! You can do this!
Thank you Barb! Found a Fushion store with pretty much the entire line. Plan is to sand, ultra grip, Ash , in bathroom will be tough top coat and kitchen will be a stain /topcoat.
