Just an observation. With that supply hose snaking all over the access road, how are other units and vehicles going to be able to come in to provide support? What about Ambulance access? I know that it is just a training exercise, but you have to train correctly to avoid problems when things get real. Should the hose layer be fitted with some sort of deployment arm to direct where the hose lays down? Did the layer have any more hose to get to the hydrant? Sweeping around those bends will take up more hose lengths. Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺

Back in the 1990's I was on a forest fire crew. On one fire we laid out a 5000' mainline through the bush 'by hand' I guess you would say. (our hose was alot smaller than what the truck is laying out, around 2" if I remember correctly). We wore hose boxes on our backs like pac sacs and there were 4 or 5, 100' lengths in each box. They were loaded in a back and forth pattern and each hose was coupled to the next one. You would walk through the bush and the hose would pay out the back. When you ran out another guy was right behind you to hook his full box on to the end of your last hose. You then went back to the pump (this was where the helicopter dropped us and all our gear off) and got another box and headed back. At the end of the mainline we wye'd off and ran two hoses that ended up getting out to about 2500' each. A third hose was wye'd off one of these and ended up at about 1000'. Each hose had what we called a 'barrel nozzle' on the end and the entire set up was supplied by a single Wajax Mark 3 pump (the legendary 'Mark 3'). Laying out that mainline was by far the hardest I had ever worked on a fire. The entire thing was laid out going uphill as well. The water was from a creek and as one would suspect it was the low spot in the area. Fortunately we were an Initial Attack crew and didn't have to stay to the end of the fire once we got around it. The mop up guys got to roll all that (now wet and muddy) hose and pack it out of the bush. Poor bastards.

in what circumstance would this be even remotely practical? One pumper pumping through 4200' to a house that's already burned down to the ground. Just because it was a good 30 years ago before a hydrant system was installed. Does not mean its still practical.

4200' would require relay pumpers at least 2 to keep pressure up due to friction loss. The friction loss in a single 5-inch LDH is as follows1: 500 gpm - 2 psi per 100 feet. 600 gpm - 2.5 psi per 100 feet. 4200 ft ÷ 100= 42 x2.5 = 105psi loss for the ipumper at the fire the pressure needs to be 50 psi which means that the pumper at the hydrant needs to be pumped at 152 psi- the intake pressure from the hydrant
