The Meaning of Human Instrumentality in Neon Genesis Evangelion
This video essay explains the original ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion as it unfolds in episodes 25 and 26, wherein Gendo Ikari triggers an apocalyptic event called Human Instrumentality.
The Human Instrumentality event constitutes the end of the world as we know it: all human bodies are obliterated, and our souls are transported to a spiritual domain where they begin to meld into one another. The goal of Human Instrumentality is to end human individuality altogether, and unify all persons into a single divine consciousness.
Episodes 25 and 26 depict the Human Instrumentality event as it unfolds through the eyes of Shinji Ikari, Asuka Langley Soryu, Rei Ayanami, and Misato Katsuragi. This is largely a traumatic experience, because all of these characters are forced to reveal their darkest thoughts and desires, which they suppress from others and themselves. In the video I explain why Human Instrumentality forces these characters to reveal their inner lives.
I also trace the journey of Shinji Ikari, through which he overcomes a fixation on the idea that he is worthless and unworthy of love. Shinji formed this idea because of the influence of his father, Gendo; and we learn that this idea also shapes his relationship to the Evangelion Unit 1. Shinji pilots the Eva because he believes it is the only way that he can secure love from other people. But he learns to abandon this idea through a sequence of experiences that are delivered to him over the course of the Human Instrumentality Event.
The Human Instrumentality Project sits at the center of all Evangelion lore, and yet the episodes that depict the way this project is realized are exceedingly hard to understand. I hope this video is able to bring some clarity to all my fellow Neon Genesis Evangelion enjoyers!

The Reason Kaworu Wanted to Die || Neon Genesis Evangelion Analysis
This video essay explores Kaworu's relationship to Shinji Ikari through the lens of his final act, wherein he requests Shinji Ikari to end his life in the dark depths of NERV HQ. The reason Kaworu wanted Shinji to end his life is because Kaworu loved Shinji, and he knew that he would annihilate Shinji along with the rest of humanity if he was allowed to survive. But how does Kaworu know that he...
Jill's Tragic Story in Berserk: Lost Children || Two Essays
This video contains two small essays about the guest star of the Lost Children Arc in Berserk: the young girl named Jill. Jill has a surprising amount of depth for such a young character who appears for only a few chapters. This video attempts to show how she thematically connects to the elves that Guts must destroy during the arc, and how Jill's relationship to Guts affected her on an emotiona...
The Selfless Lives of Angels in Neon Genesis Evangelion
This video essay explores the true meaning of the angels in the lore of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I examine two scenes where Shinji Ikari and Rei Ayanami both encounter angels face to face, and hold a little conversation with them. We learn from these encounters what the true power of the angels is: it is the power to overcome the loneliness of humanity, the pain of heartbreak, and the failures ...
Analysis of Horror in Berserk Chapter 2
This video explores a scene of horror in Chapter 2 of Kentaro Miura's Berserk. Guts knowingly leads a father and daughter to their doom, and all the while he speaks cheerfully about how their fate means nothing to him, and they are getting what they deserve. And yet his face tells a different story, because Guts cannot conceal the dread in his heart when this poor father and daughter meet their...
Love and a Death Wish || Berserk Manga Analysis
This Berserk video essay examines Griffith's relationship to Guts from a psychological perspective. I ask: Why did Griffith originally take a liking to Guts? What did he see in him? And I answer: He saw a strange kind of paradox in Guts's behavior on the battefield. Guts seemed to fight almost as though he wanted to end his life right then and there; and yet at the same time, he fought more fer...

Dune Lore: The Bene Gesserit Heresy
This video essay explains the philosophical and historical underpinnings of the Bene Gesserit from the world of Dune. I focus on the idea of humanity, which under the ideology of the Bene Gesserit is a title labelled only for a select few: people like Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica, who have been bred and trained in accordance with the ultimate potential of their species. As I explain in the vi...
Kaji's Melons Represent Misato's Love || Video Essay: Neon Genesis Evangelion
This video essay explores the romantic symbolism of Kaji's watermelon garden in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Kaji keeps this garden a secret from the women in his life, and from Misato most of all, though he chooses to show it to Shinji during a heart to heart in Episode 17. His conversation with Shinji reveals that the garden represents the pain of an old heartbreak, which Misato inflicted upon Ka...
A Dream of Death in "Ghost in the Shell" (1995) || Video Essay
This video essay explores Mamuro Oshii's 1995 classic, Ghost in the Shell. I explore the famous scene where Batou tries to understand Major Motoko Kusanagi's bizarre hobby of diving. The reason this hobby is so strange is that Kusanagi cannot swim: she has a cybernetic body with zero buoyancy, that sinks like a stone. And so every time Kusanagi steps into the ocean, she is risking her life. But...
The Penguin is Doing Something Amazing Right Now || Episode 5 Story Analysis

This video essay gives my impression of the story and characters of The Penguin up to Episode 5. The story is now pitting Sofia Gigante (formerly Sofia Falcone) against Oz Cobb (or Oswald Cobb), and both of these characters are so amazing, it's hard to stomach the idea that either of them are going to lose to the other. In the video I explain a little bit of why I love these characters so much....
Casca Loved Griffith Because He Was Weak || Berserk: Video Essay
This video essay explores Casca's relationship to Griffith in the Golden Age arc of Berserk. It explores the reason why Casca loved Griffith so much, and why she devoted her life to him. On the face of it, the reason behind Casca's devotion seems simple enough: Griffith saved her from a life of abject servitude to a predatory noble, and Casca feels that is indebted to him. She must pay him back...

I saw Spirited Away once, online. But I had to watch it with english subtitles, because try as I might, I couldn't seem to find the english dub version.
Love these videos, hope you do longer ones eventually. Your insight is lovely and voice very charming
Thanks, friend!
Wouldnt much of the worlds magic disappear since it stems from the outer gods and celestial bodies?
I have also wondered this, but the way you describe how they imagine objects and whether it is accurate enough for them to reappear ties directly to why faith is essential for incantations. Only someone devout would be able to envision the godly and divine with sufficient accuracy. Furthermore, we know from Thops' Barrier that incantations and sorcery are fundamentally similar, differing only in their sources of inspiration
Yeah I agree that sorcery and incantations really just differ in the source of their inspiration, but ‘inside’ the magician it looks the pretty similar
The author of Berserk cited Kaze to Ki no Uta, a story featuring gay relationships, as an influence. This supports the idea that he may have intentionally written a relationship with homosexual undertones without explicitly stating it, to avoid conflicting with the broader audience's interest in the series.
Oh nice - I didn’t know that but I have to check out that manga/anime/whatever it was! Could be fun to talk about in a video
Aha this was very informative thank you very much, pretty cool of them to do this
This makes a lot of sense!
This is so good, i also appreciate that you said this without making 10 min long video xD

The only unbelievable thing about Spirited Away was how fast Chihiro got a job.
maybe the spirit of the forest can speak but did choose not to do so?

Kids stealing cards in my day was…. God what did my generation steal cards for??? I know the later half did it for fortnight (my brother spent $2000 of fortnight skins and virtual currency) but what did us early Gen Z do it for?! Ok it orobably didn’t help i was the rule follower heh
Rei is acually a character that is mentally but not physically strong
the philsophy of the angels is so intresting, what exactly are they is still a strange
Cause it’s the spirit of the forest Not of the animals
I believe Lauren Bacall voiced the dub of the Witch of the Wastes.

yipee spoiler friendly berserk video
still dumb still bad still shitty
Man, looking back, this version of guts was fascinating. He constantly lies to himself and pretends to not care when that was never him at all. It was just his way of coping with his situation.
Yeah. I was really only able to see through the lies when I reread it after the Golden Age.

Lohse is basically sort of Dark Urge
This is true in real life. It understands its own nature, unlike humans. Humans forget that we are just highly sensitive and complex apes. We are told what the right way to behave is, and then are shocked by our own animalistic instincts. The more disconnected you are from your bestial nature, the more it will catch you off guard. The more difficult it is to control or tame the self, which reacts to the pressures around it. Similar to Carl Jung’s idea of the shadow. We should all know our beast intimately to avoid being overtaken by it, and to avoid not seeing it in others
To be fair, the Spirit CAN speak (he calls Ashitaka's name once, urging to save the girl he loves), he just chooses not to. He is just beyond that.
I don't think it CAN'T speak, I think it chooses not to. It's beyond being human or animal, it is the concept of life itself. It's an elevated being.
Not inferior, purer I think.
Beautiful berserk is the greatest of all time 🙏🙏🙏
Not sure if it's anti-work. Did didn't the creator say that the girl in the movie was inspired by a niece or something and he referred to her as lazy? The character also became more confident and strong after didn't she. Even the good twin sister made some of the characters work for her. It Al depends on the work involvement imo.
still freaks me out
Never saw Metropolis but I was a huge fan of the writers work as he made Akira My local cinema is actually doing a late night screening tonight and I might go into it blind!
I hope you see it and enjoy it!
i just read the first deluxe volume are any of your berserk videos early spoiler friendly? :p
I think I'd recommend finishing up the Golden Age for most of my videos. This particular video covers stuff in Golden Age Chapter 5 and earlier, which is not far from where you are, and nothing it discusses is particularly spoilerific anyways. However, I'd caution you from the rest of my Berserk videos until you finish the Golden Age because they are extremely spoilerific.
Oh, and one other thing: you're in for a treat and I hope you enjoy it!
@@ChumpyGames will i know what the golden age is when i get to it?
It ends about a quarter way through deluxe volume 5. You will know it when you see it

hey chumpy, cool vid!!! btw, ive always wondered what your your pfp is
It is an image of a philosopher called Parmenides that was illustrated in a medieval manuscript. 😃
@@ChumpyGames oh dude thats cool!!
It's practicing noble silence
Doesn’t Mononoke literally scold the apes in the film for taking on human ways like violence to survive? The apes are becoming more human-like, and so it is implied they are *degrading*.
There's also the broad theological reading that God is silent or silence itself, which flies in the face on any and all anthropomorphism.
Naw he just didn't have anything he wanted to say to anyone.
Sophie you’re beautiful.
